With songs regularly averaging upward of ten minutes (and sometimes as much as 20 and beyond), Portland,OR'sYOBareclearlynot acommercialheavy metal band, but rather fuse elements of doom, sludge, space, andprogressiverockintointerestingcombinations so as to belietheir bloatedgirth. Founded in 2000 by vocalist/guitarist MikeScheidt,withbassistLowell Iles anddrummer Gabe Morley, YOB issued 2002'sElaborations ofCarbon before admitting a newrhythmsection ofIsamuSato (bass) andTravis Foster (drums), and fast-delivering ensuing effortsCatharsis (2003),The IllusionofMotion (2004),andThe Unreal NeverLived (2005). Each garnered more acclaim than the last, and the final pairreflectedthatgrowthby findingtheband plucked fromtiny local label exile by the historic Metal Blade Records.
