Thanks Chris :). You got much on for the long weekend? Anyone else?

airborne50caliber 06-10-2005 03:24 AM

I posted this in a separate thread but since you're all bored I'll bump the thread with this anyway.

hey guys I got a thing that's been nagging me for a bit. I only have experience in the doamin of recording as a pose to PA and live sound so I;ve never come across this.

There are different cabling types that carry diffrent signal levels.

--> Jack cables of all types
--> XLRs
--> RCA
--> Speakon® and binding post speaker cables

There are different signal levels

--> Instrument level
--> Mic level
--> Line level

Is it right to say that an XLR can carry all of these, as can a jack?

Okay, the real question, in the context of PA, is High Level signals. Is it correct to say that a signal anywhere post a power amp, necessarily goes to the speaker as a high level signal?

So it is

Mic level line level high level
Mic -----------> Mixer ----------> Poweramp --------------> Passive Speaker

Mic level high level
Mic -----------> Powered Mixer ------------>Passive Speaker

Mic level line level
Mic -----------> Mixer ----------> Active Speaker

correct?

And can this high level signal be carried byXLR cabling or is it necessary to use speakon/binding post cable past a poweramp?

Please, could aes or someone give me quite a detailed answer on this? Thanks.

you girl, learning is for real men!

heh, its probably for the best, you might've been regretting it for a long time otherwise. Good luck finsing a job.

Well done trig- i had my english non-fiction today, and made myself look extremely clever by writing a review of Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenace when everybody else did star wars and zep albums.

airborne50caliber 06-10-2005 09:59 AM

I would've done zep albums

/Had english media

gaslight 06-10-2005 10:08 AM

43p 06-10-2005 12:38 PM

Hey! I'm Eggy to my friends-and most other people. I play Guitar and Bass, probably prefer Bass and better at it I'm in a band at my school and so far only had i gig. I'm into RHCP, Green day and other stuff like some fleetwood mac and Elvis.

That'll do fer now!

moaner 06-10-2005 02:36 PM

fleetwood mac balances out green day, elvis is better than the chillis are bad...

you rate "above average2 on the moanerscale, you must be very proud, because i just invented it.

Trigger_003 06-10-2005 04:01 PM

G'day Eggy.
Good luck to everyone for their exams :).

KKKKKocaine: In our unseen topic essay there were three articles. I took two quotes from one and one from another - whereas I was supposed to take one from each (it wasn't specified to do so but hey). The third article was just a letter to the editor and had nothing to support my view and/or anything strong to rebut to, so I simply didn't quote it. That's why I lost the 2%. Ah well.
Sounds good about the gigs. It's a shame you dropped out of college, but if you weren't enjoying it, it's understandable I guess. I spose your band is the main thing on the agenda now?

airborne50caliber 06-10-2005 04:02 PM

RHCP and specially 'mac scores teh high

airborne50caliber 06-10-2005 04:27 PM

bump. me at an uber jazz gig

Aes820 06-10-2005 07:14 PM

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence is an exteremly hard read. One of the very few books that I've never finished.
I got up to a stage where I was having to read every page twice just to understand it, it wasn't sinking in, so I gave up.

Trigger_003 06-10-2005 07:46 PM

Heh, the title at least sounds interesting. What's it about?

Aes820 06-10-2005 08:56 PM

It's a road-story about this bloke who's on a motorcycle trip with his son across the southern central states of the US.
While they are traveling he discusses human values. The concepts behind what makes us think how we do.

Rhetorics, mental motivation (which he calles Gumption), romantisism, the perception of quality, etc. It is really tough reading.

It reads like a question on a HSC paper.
If you've got good language skills, then it'll be worth a shot.
But since I think I've got a stronger mathematical mind. I found it hard to get through
Well, I'm no dumbarse when it somes to langauge, but I still struggeld.

gaslight 06-11-2005 12:46 AM

Ah, HSC English. The less said about HSC English the better.

may_six 06-11-2005 01:08 AM

this may have been asked many many times. here goes once more. what is a good bang for your buck mixer? i dont want to spend too much on it. im only recording 1 guitar. are the differences noticable enough for mixers for low price? im not sure what my price range is, but if possible, could i get some for the best buys around its price?

im gonna try to trade my sm58 for a 57 and then do some recordings

I struggled in a few parts. but if there was something i really didn't get, i moved on.

I'm more maths orientated to, i guess. I don't find english an easy subject (but i never have to do it ever again :D )

If you didn't finish it, it means you didn't get the happy ending...

gaslight 06-11-2005 05:12 AM

I've never heard of it, who wrote it? Good read?

Trigger_003 06-11-2005 05:21 AM

I'll check it out these holidays :).

moaner 06-11-2005 05:30 AM
I've never heard of it, who wrote it? Good read?
robert Pirsig.

Its not an easy read, but its very rewarding.

gaslight 06-11-2005 05:39 AM

I'll buy it if I see it in a bookstore somewhere.

I am so bored tonight...
