You're too new. Give it 24hours.

mnemonic 08-13-2008 02:42 PM

doesn't it tell you to wait 24 hours when you try?

4yearpro? 08-13-2008 03:16 PM

Dancin' Man 08-13-2008 03:39 PM

Can we ban threads on how much x piece of equipment is worth? Here's a couple ways to give a handy link and be rid of annoying, useless threads

http://www.gbase.com
http://www.ebay.com

Tada. Both are what music stores themselves use to find the value of an instrument.

If thats directed at me and my Strat thread then whats the difference between me using this website to find a price for something rather than using the 2 that you listed?
The only one I can see is that you're here and that you don't want to answer the thread. Well guess what? Its not your job to answer so you don't have to.
Don't click the thread and you'll never be bothered by it. If you already clicked it and it didn't interest you then press the back button in your browser and find a thread that does interest you.
You do realise that you don't have to click and read through every thread, right? Is having a thread like that somehow affecting you?
I'd be slightly worried if it was.

Dancin' Man 08-13-2008 06:29 PM

No, it's directed at everyone. This forum is called the guitar forum. If anything, those threads belong in the Marketplace, or should be closed as soon as there is an answer. The trouble is, not all answers can be reliable, so you end up with false information. By using those two websites, you get the broadest, and most accurate appraisal without actually bringing it in to a certified buyer and seller of that specific brand and paying them to tell you how much it is worth.
Why those threads are allowed to go on for pages at a time is beyond me.

mnemonic 08-13-2008 08:40 PM

if you actually bothered to read mars volta's thread, there were various other questions asked and answered, which is why it went on for 3 pages.

as far as "this is a guitar forum" goes, i'm pretty sure asking how much a guitar is worth relates to guitars, so i'm not sure why anyone would ban them.

Dancin' Man 08-13-2008 10:22 PM

Maybe ban is too far, but leaving them open is dumb. If the conversation goes farther, then ask a mod to change the name of the thread. I really don't care, I just proposed this as a way to possibly stream line the forum, maybe in hopes of attracting new, productive members to a dying site.

JoshIsNumber3 08-13-2008 11:01 PM

There's not really that much to talk about on a guitar site on which most everyone is relatively young, have little to no gigging experience, buy their gear with christmas and birthday monies, don't really know that much about music theory, and quite frankly, are terrible dressers.

motogrifo 08-13-2008 11:05 PM

I agree with josh
we need more alcoholic wannabe rockstars like me

Dancin' Man 08-13-2008 11:39 PM

Maybe by making an adjustment like I suggested, the forum would be more inviting to older, more knowledgeable people that would educate the young'uns and provide a more, dare I say, productive community

JoshIsNumber3 08-13-2008 11:41 PM

Unlikely, the older user base as far as these types of forums go is centered on harmony-central and will do so forever. People like them hate change and so it's a good thing for the people who think that a guitar sounds natural through a marshal stack with nothing else at all, to stay over there.

Besides, the brain drain isn't on mx as a whole, just the guitar forum. This place has always been awful.

Mars Volta 08-14-2008 04:15 AM

Well the way I see it is that you have a guitar, you're not sure how much its worth and you want to find out so you do some research.
You look on ebay and there are no completed listings of the same guitar, you look on gbase and there isn't the same guitar, so instead of waiting what could be months for them to pop up on those sites why not just think "well a Guitar Forum might know because its a place full of people who talk about guitars all day" and ask there?
I did on here and a few others so that I could get the most accurate answer possible and they all said the same thing; even though its an older Fender its not worth very much.
Now I know that I'm going to keep it and modify it a bit, and because I asked how much it was worth here I can now ask those same people questions about the modding, like where can I get a pickguard etc.
So yeah, I see what you're saying but no. They're threads about guitars, this is a guitar forum so why not ask here? I got 45 replies or something so they're obviously not a waste of space and as I've said, other threads are now going to come out of that so thats another thread that people might be interested in.

your_mum 08-14-2008 04:44 PM

I think this forum already has too little traffic to really be banning threads which tbh, are informative to other people across the forum anyway and are therefore in no way a useless post.

but hey, thats just my 2 pence worth.

that's the way I see it, if I started closing every thread that wasn't universally interesting original content then you might as well shut down the guitar forum

JoshIsNumber3 08-14-2008 05:48 PM

and it's not like this site works well enough anyways to really establish a firm user base
