Review Summary: Good luck, son. I hope you crash.
Self Defense Family (formerly End of a Year) are probably one of the most interesting bands I have heard to this day. It’s truly a shame that they have gone so unnoticed to numerous peoples ears since their inception in 2003. Then again, it’s easy to place the blame on them when listening to their music; a varied style of that may be a little off putting to your average listener, but a great reward in the long run. Often cited as “post-everything,” Self Defense Family always manage to bring their A game on their releases, and their first installment of the “Island Series” recordings,
I’m Going Through Some ***, is no different.
The two song 7-inch starts off with the track, “I’m Going Through Some ***.” The song abruptly starts, and the beautifully layered guitars immediately draw you into it’s oddly dreamy atmosphere. Patrick Kindlon’s vocals are as ugly and emotional as ever, but it’s his lyrical wit and vocal delivery sell the song. “
I scored an F on standardized tests. I boarded a plane to Los Angeles. Mid flight I received your text, ‘good luck, son, I hope you crash.” The ending is a real treat and makes this one of SDF’s greatest tracks to date. The second track is faster and more upbeat than the last. The bass line is the highlight of the song, making its presence known from beginning to end. The band does an outstanding job with this EP and the production helps breathe life into both songs. Every note of every instrument is audibly clear and makes for a great listen.
Self Defense Family’s Island Series is something that many people are looking forward to, and also maybe a new album. A handful of great musicians making great music. What else can you ask for? Look out for their releases in the future.
