Ridiculously awesome. This is only tangentially related to technical death metal. (Modern progressive metal strikes closer to the truth). The bassist is a fretboard maniac; the guitarists are precision machinists; the vocalist is distinctly peculiar, largely preferring to gutturally rasp than grunt or roar; the track titles and lyrics are decisively intelligent; each track distinguishes itself in one or more memorable ways. This is the complete package, assuming you can get past the vocalist's teutonic eccentricities.

The greatest tech death album ever released? Potentially. Unlike rivals Obscura, the music here is
much greater than the sum talent of its musicians.

The beauty in this album unfolds slowly. At first glance the amount of ideas and material seems daunting, but after more than a year of almost continuous revisitation I wouldn't want the band to change a single note. A rare perfect and original gem in a scene covered with superfluous copycats. True progressive music.

Noneuclid and Obscura both didn't do it for me. But this band gave me my album of the year. (can't imagine there will be an album this year which is better than this).

Very pleasantly content. That dows not make sense? Well, these guys are a supergroup, and more often than not they disappoint. In the case of Alkaloid however, thr music is better than the sum of its parts. I think this album is better than any Obacura. It has a heavier edge, but also a more explorative one, all while still maintaining flow and amazing musicianship.

Alter Magnitudes is alone worth to buy this album. Some really incredible musicianship and melody here. It's fun, it's heavy as fuck and lightning fast in "drop your jaw" pace and precision. Some songs just rips through your flesh. Also it's recorded in audiophile manner, which is greatly appreciated - sounds incredible on high-end audio.

2015's biggest surprise. We all knew this would be good. No one knew it would be this good.

Putting the tech-death label on Alkaloids's debut album would be misleading. Grossman et al. display some impressive songwriting abilities through a sound that is more akin to progressive metal tinged with technical yet atmospheric tendencies, without ever delving in self indulgence. With a great mix and dynamic production, engaging but diverse arrangements shine in tracks like the Cynic-infused "Carbon Phrases" and the Morbid Angel chug of "Cthulu". Also, Morean's incredible vocal performance is worth mentioning.

Alkaloid's debut The Malkuth Grimoire is a showcase of progressive technical death metal from a group of musicians with seemingly endless talent. Luckily for us the talent is not wasted in endless wankery but used to generate strong compositions which allow musicianship to shine while retaining song structure. The ebbs and flows from spacey, almost funky clean parts to hammering death metal can be attributed to true songwriting skills. The vocalist shines with a creepy clean tone contrasted with a traditional death metal growl. Unfortunately the biggest problem becomes the extensive content. The album is front-loaded with borderline genius trackers like Carbon Phrases, Cthulu, Alter Magnitudes, Orgonism and the first parts of the Dyson suite. These are some of the best metal tracks of the year but much of the second half of the album feels like recycling but executed as precisely as the beginning half. I wish for these guys to pull off the anti-Necrophagist, with a bit more focus I could see this group of maestros producing an all-time great technical death record.

the beginning was kind of boring, very plain death metal. but halfway through, it icks up and becomes a pretty kick ass album.

Amazing progessive/death metal album. Incredible musicianship and very atmospheric for a tech death
album. Album of the year so far.

3.5 greatFrozenVain | March 19th 15

A very solid progressive/technical death metal release. They advertise themselves as the world's most extreme prog metal band, which isn't true. They are hardly re-inventing the genre either but this still has a lot of cool moments. This should have been better considering the line-up but w/e. Really enjoyable.

Instant classic of the progressive genre. The material is exceptionally diverse and strong and every musician shines and delivers. This album demands quite a few spins to fully reveal its potential but the payoff is tremendous.

Noneuclid + Obscura = Alkaloid. Lots of influence from both bands/projects, so no bonus points for originality. But the music is hi-tech & hi-quality.
