06.20.12 | when i used to abuse xanax it helped me let loose and jamming with friends was a lot more fun, but when it came down to writing something i wanted to keep, it was hard to maintain focus |

omnipanzer
06.20.12 | Some say yes and some say no, I think it is dependent on the individual tbh. |
thunder15
06.20.12 | are you on a SSRI? I've been on celexa for a year and haven't felt anything like that, but as omni said, anti-depressants can have wildly different effects. it really depends on the individual's brain chemistry |
bloc
06.20.12 | All it does is change the key of the song from minor to major |

GuanoBumbershoot
06.20.12 | Some of the best music ever put to record was made under the influence of depression, so ditch the meds and write a cathartic masterpiece. |
Thane
06.20.12 | been on an SSRI for two years, stopped taking them a month ago and i've been way more productive. idk. that's my experience anyways. |
ffs
06.20.12 | antidepressants are depressing |
wacknizzle
06.20.12 | ^ Sweet Curl Up and Die reference. That band does not get enough love. |
Spec
06.20.12 | Anti-depressants can take away creativity yes. Once I got all numbed out I was a lot funnier though. |
AGuyIsWatchingYou
06.20.12 | Who fucking cares. It's better to not be depressed than it is to have the ability write shitty music. Just fucking take them you self-loathing dumbass. |
Satellite
06.20.12 | took paxil for years and it never negatively affected (holy fuck this sentence is about to get pretentious) my creativity. i gained like 25 pounds, though. |
Trebor.
06.20.12 | If Billy Corgan took anti depressants then he wouldn't have made siamese dream and ire would win
|
Satellite
06.20.12 | if he took a lot of them he'd die and we'd all win |
Trebor.
06.20.12 | The best anti depressant is doing shit |
Scoot
06.20.12 | maybe you just aren't that creative |
Cells
06.20.12 | dude fuck anti-depressants, like trebor said the best antidote for depression is doing things. However as someone who used to suffer from depression I know this answer means nothing. So other suggestion would be is to not even think about how you're feeling(in the sense that dont label yourself as sad or melancholy because then you become so) , STOP ruminating and honestly, smoke some fucking weed. Fuck the anti-weed ad's, fuck the little kids who are "above the influence" that shit works. |
wacknizzle
06.20.12 | If anything being in that state of mind would help you be creative. Everyone says something will inhibit their creativity, even depression, but the music you create during a certain time your life is almost a living snapshot of how you lived and felt then, no one is ever in the pefect mindset to create but it happens if you stick to it. Each person's mind is capable of great things no matter what predicament they're in, letting fear or doubt hold you back is a foolish thing to do. |
Spec
06.20.12 | You don't need to go to smoking weed or anything. The trick I find is to keep yourself occupied. The anti-depressants can still help your social anxiety and numb you out but it's smart to stick to a low dose if possible. |
eternium
06.21.12 | Weed can help your social anxiety and depression and shit too. |
DurzoBlint
06.21.12 | Yes they can. But if you feel you/someone else feels you need them then you obviously it isn't wise to
stop taking them for this reason. So how about you and your band get on to writing the next "gloria"
(mineral)....? |
BallsToTheWall
06.21.12 | anti depressants are for pussies. Cope sober. |
Spec
06.21.12 | If you smoke too much weed numbness is even worse than anti-depressants. Don't get me wrong weed is great but too much can be harmful to the people around you. Know what I mean? |
HitlerIsADeity
06.21.12 | i love the medical industries approach to sickness: give them a temporary fix (pills) to cover up the symptoms instead of dealing with the problem. |
wacknizzle
06.21.12 | If the anti-depressants are robbing you of your emotions then it might be inhibiting your creativity, because that's where alot of my creativity comes from. Like Spec said stick to a low dose if you can, then it's less likely you'll be numbed and you'll be more creative. |

06.22.12 | Personally, I'd say no. But I took myself off my meds after I realized they were sort of making me more depressed (somehow) and I feel pretty much fine. I was on a real low dosage prescription to begin with anyway, though, so I may not be the best example.
I have found that I haven't really been inspired to write musically since I began them, though, which is a bit odd. But my creative writing has never been better. I recommend finding something that really influences you, meditating on that a little bit, an just sitting down to write whatever it is you're writing. I think the best piece of music I've written so far was written under a depressive spell, too. That's not to say you should go off your meds, just that sometimes having that weight on your shoulders and not being able to sleep is a good motivator. It's just going to be rough to find something else, but if you're serious about it, you can do it. |

06.22.12 | good advice ^ |
