| Top 10 Albums | 10 | | Taking Back Sunday Tell All Your Friends
This is me holding on to my middle school years, and loving it. | 9 | | The Mars Volta Frances the Mute
My TMV listening experience went something like this: i listened to de-loused, was
amazed with this hard rock/prog sound, and promptly held off on listening to
frances because it was too long and seemed like too challenging of a listen. finally
got over it, listened to frances, and realized how much of an idiot i had been.
frances expands on everything hinted at on its predecessor and then some,
creating TMV's masterpiece. L'via L'viaquez is the obvious highlight, but the whole
album is brilliant and also flows with an ease that shouldn't be found in a full-length
album. | 8 | | Say Anything ...Is A Real Boy
My go-to sexual frustration album. I held off on listening to this for no good reason
except for the fact that Do Better sounded like it came from a band that didn't
have much potential. Bemis delivers a stunning performance, both vocally and
intstrumentally, creating a chaotic atmosphere that is sexually angsty both lyrically
and musically, a feat that cannot be understated. Songs go through as many as 4
tempo changes, making for a hectic listen that constantly keeps the listener on his
toes. | 7 | | Tigers on Trains Grandfather
Though one could argue that ItAOtS is folk, that album is one that transcends
genres. This does no such thing, but is nearly as good. This is the album that
truly got me into folk. There are no weak tracks; every song is at least superb.
The lyrics are top notch, often being cynically Christian, and the musicianship
matches. Anyone who has the slightest interest in folk owes it to himself to listen
to this album. | 6 | | The National Alligator
This was a reulctant 3 the first time i heard it. Oh, how times have changed. The
definition of a grower, the understated sound means that every listen brings a new
intricacy that was unnoticed before. Matt Berninger's baritone is absolutely
beautiful. His lyrics are genius ("i'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls" how
anyone can dislike that is beyond me) You can see that Devendorf is on his way to
becoming the best drummer in indie. The first installment in The National's journey
to adulthood, the teenage years avoiding growing up, is the best. | 5 | | Manchester Orchestra Mean Everything to Nothing
This album holds and will always hold a special place in my heart as the album that
got me through the toughest time in my life. Andy Hull's voice is majestic,
possessing a massive range of singing styles, being capable of soft (album highlight
I Can Feel a Hot One) to shouting (Shake It Out) and never sounding uneasy. This
is the album that made me fully realize how much i love indie. Also, contains the
best hidden track ever in Jimmy, He Whispers. | 4 | | The Weakerthans Reconstruction Site
My go-to happy album. Whenever anything good happens to me, I listen to this
album. When i'm trying to feel better about myself, i listen to this album. Samson
pens the greatest lyrical album ever in this masterpiece, with songs like "One Great
City!" and "Reconstruction Site" being particular lyrical masterpieces. The
musicianship is superb as well, giving us a nice variety that keeps the listener on his
toes. Also, eric's review for this is top 10 reviews on this site. go check it out. | 3 | | Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
Cathartic. If i had to describe this album in one word, that would be it. If you're
pissed, listening to this releases all your anger and leaves you winded at the end.
The album is a definite grower, as it takes a few listens for the massiveness of the
album to really hit you. And with every listen comes something new, some new
emotion felt during a particular song. Jesse Lacey leads us through this heavy,
dense album. | 2 | | Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
I avoided this album for the longest time, even though it had that lofty 4.4 rating.
I have no idea why. Maybe it was the similar artists, the fact that med said they
had a "cult following" (something that wouldn't turn me away from a band now, at
all), but i put this off as long as i could. Thank Buddha i finally caved and got it,
because i knew it was a classic after the first listen. Everything on the album is
perfect. The lyrics, the flow, even the instrumentation is flawless. Jeff Mangum
masterminds an album that contains songs with just acoustic guitar to songs with
bagpipes. Bagpipes. No matter what your musical preferences are, this is one of
those album's that everyone needs to listen to before they die at least once. | 1 | | Radiohead OK Computer
This is the album that got me into music, really really got me into music. It broke
down pretty much every mental barrier that I had concerning music, opening
countless doors which I am still discovering. I owe my love for music to this album.
Anyone who thinks i'm a pretentious jerk about music can thank this album right
here. | |
