03.19.13 | 1,3,4, and 5 are all things YOU have control over. Not doing these things is as simple as NOT DOING THEM and having some respect for yourself and the person you've become, regardless of how the relationship ended.
2 however is not in your complete control, but there's ways to fix that.
Your friend will grow from this experience, or remain a somewhat befuddled relationship retard. |

03.19.13 | I've wondered a lot lately how much of our sadness we manufacture. |
Acanthus
03.19.13 | Pretty much all of it, since sadness is an emotional state and not some global constant. |
omnipanzer
03.19.13 | All of it technically |
Kimm
03.19.13 | Right, but emotions are still part of human nature. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being sad, right? But how long do you get to be sad about something before it just equates to self pity?
What about things like depression? Can we just tell people to pick up and move on, or is there something to be said for chemical imbalances etc?
Wish I knew all these things. |

03.19.13 | That's not something anyone but yourself would be able to define, since sadness is unique from person to person.
Depression is another matter, but imo some forms of it can be solved with a strong will and the right motivation. It's a really annoying field of study to watch/learn about, because we know so little while it affects so many (even ignoring the blanket statements made by those who claim to be depressed but are really just sad, the term is almost lost its meaning by now). |
omnipanzer
03.19.13 | "Right, but emotions are still part of human nature. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being sad, right? But how long do you get to be sad about something before it just equates to self pity?"
True but the answer to your more general question was "all". Of course there is nothing wrong with being sad, it's therapeutic and perfectly healthy. How long is too long, only you can decide that and the greater the tragedy I'd say the more leeway you get and should give yourself. My father passed away 8-9 years ago and I still stumble upon albums or tv shows that will instantly bring a tear to my eye.
"What about things like depression? Can we just tell people to pick up and move on, or is there something to be said for chemical imbalances etc?

This is an entirely different bowl of wax. Chemical imbalance is something you don't even want to start assuming you have because it is generally a life long issue that needs to be treated chemically or through therapy (or both) forever or until it is felt you have the skills to cope on your own. You typically can't tell someone with a medically diagnosed chemical imbalance to pick up and carry on.
Someone who is diagnosed as clinically depressed can fix it on their own, may need a little chemical help for a month or two or could deal with it forever it's a deep deep hole to have to get into. It's a more general question than you may know you are asking. |

omnipanzer
03.19.13 | Thank you Acanthus. If you feel you are depressed you should definitely consult your doctor. There is
no shame in needing a little help from time to time. You should definitely consider the fact that you
are completely healthy... it just depends on your coping skills imho. |
Kimm
03.19.13 | Yes, Omni is a wordsmith.
I don't know...I feel like depression is a very real thing, but I feel like it's also exploited. It seems like anyone can walk into a doctor's office, say "I feel sad" and walk out with a prescription for some sort of antidepressant, and I just don't think it's quite as common as that. |
Acanthus
03.19.13 | Depression meds can be ridiculous influences on your personality and other aspects of your life; ex was a different person with them. |
Kimm
03.19.13 | "I should probably take medicine for my depression but it makes me feel mentally weak that I need it to cope so my pride tries to make me strong enough without it."
Amen. Got 'diagnosed' with depression and social anxiety a few months ago, and I have not taken any medication for it, because it just seems like...I don't know, I've dealt with it for years, why should it be any different just because a doctor puts some sort of medical label on it? |
omnipanzer
03.19.13 | That is a thin line that only you can navigate however the very fact that you feel that way probably means you aren't one of those people. This is a point you can make to your doctor and they can help you decide if it is an need or a want "for you". They will also make additional points I wouldn't even think of as they deal with it daily. |
Acanthus
03.19.13 | "They will also make additional points I wouldn't even think of as they deal with it daily."
Which really must be quite something, I can't fathom doing that.
@andcas - glad you were self aware enough to see that and can function without them (or so I assume, online you seem pretty chipper). |

"I should probably take medicine for my depression but it makes me feel mentally weak that I need it to cope so my pride tries to make me strong enough without it."
Honestly I felt that way for a very long time and I've dug myself out of a few depressions but it depends on the person. I have a very addictive personality so I will always choose the non-drug rout because I know I have to. My wife on the other hand has taken medications for a month or two to help her out of a rut or a bout of anxiety or two and she has no problem putting them down after a very reasonable period of time. For some reason if I am handed a drugs I will always choose to take a mental vacation but my wife doesn't have that issue at all. Drugs can be very helpful you just have to decide if they will be helpful for you. |

Kimm
03.19.13 | "I have a negative view of paying a person to listen to your problems when they wouldn't really care otherwise. "
I used to think like this as well, but I think a little bit differently now. These people may not have any direct emotional connections to you, but they're still in that field because they have a deep sense of compassion for people. The way I see it, the trick to being in this field is finding a healthy balance between caring and distancing yourself. |

Why in the world would you do that to yourself? The ex sex is only a bad thing if the breakup was really bad imho. If it ended amicably then no harm no foul. |

03.19.13 | after this sort of thing happens to you a few times you start to harden and realize how to deal with it. doesn't mean its all of the sudden easy, but at least you can avoid these common pitfalls. ex sex has always been bad (but at the same time veryyy good) in my experience. even if you're the one who did the breaking up. it usually just hurts the other person all over again bc they're too dumb to get through their head that you're never ever ever getting back together |
