01.09.08 | The first six are classic metal, the next 28 is more death/black/power/metalcore
Also, if you heavily recommend a band, please put the album i should start with.
I'm going to listen to all of these bands to get a feel for them, but i was more wondering which ones i should get into immediately. |
iarescientists
01.09.08 | 11, 13, 22, and 24 are the only bands on this list that are better than shit |

01.09.08 | 5-overrated
7-generic, boring, dull melodeath (don't bother)
9-awful
10-don't bother
12-hit or miss but you might like them
13-yeah
14-try Botch instead (Norma Jean completely 100% ripped them off)
15-Decent, nothing special
17-NO
21-Decent, Nocturnal might be worth checking out
22-Overrated
23-Great stuff
24-Hell yeah
26-I don't like them at all but alot of people seem to, try them for yourself
27-Not that good, a good starting point for getting into metal but not really anything special
28-yeah
29-Get Beneath the Remains and forget about all their other stuff
31-Yeah, Versus the World and With Oden on Our Side are sure bets
32-Maybe, I don't really care for them
Hope I helped a little. |
Thor
01.09.08 | Hell yeah to 12, 18, 31, and 32! |
LifeInABox
01.09.08 | 11 absolutly, go for early 12, 13 is good, 24 is good, 28 is amazing. |
blackened07

Not sure if you like growled vocals, but Amon Amarth is one of my favorite folk metal bands. I would stay away from August Burns Red though, if you want good christian metalcore check out old demon hunter or becoming the archetype. |
masscows
01.09.08 | Amon Amarth isn't folk metal. |
LifeInABox
01.09.08 | Not good either |
Poet
01.09.08 | 18, 23, what I've heard from 25, are all great.
For Power Metal, check out Lost Horizon. |
blackened07
01.09.08 | Fine "viking metal" Whatever... |
masscows
01.09.08 | they're melodic death metal
but yeah hbp they're actually good, youbequiet. |
BallsToTheWall
01.09.08 | Agreed, how can someone not like Amon Amarth. Also, you should check out some Danzig and Machinae Supremacy. |
Dis_Con_Nec_Ted
01.09.08 | 22: Deftones - 'White Pony' or 'Saturday Night Wrist'
24: Wolves in the Throne Room - 'Two Hunters'

|
Bfhurricane
01.09.08 | I could tell you a lot more absolutely amazing bands. Id Anthrax, Testament, Chimaira, August Burns Red, Wintersun, Blind Guardian (from what Ive heard), and Shadows Fall |
south_of_heaven 11
01.09.08 | Running Wild - Black Hand Inn or Pile of Skulls
ftw and end. |
thesystemisdown
01.09.08 | August Burns Red, Amon Amarth and Shadows Fall are very generic. Mastodon is probably one of the best metal bands of the decade if not the last twenty years. Deftones, Thin Lizzy and Sepultura are all awesome. The rest, meh, so-so. |
thesystemisdown
01.09.08 | OK Amon Amarth isn't so much generic, that was a miscategorization.
Deftones- White Pony or Saturday Night Wrist
Sepultura- Chaos A.D or Beyond the Roots (?)
Mastodon- Leviathan or Remission (I started with Blood Mountain but your tastes seem more on the Remission side of things)
|
Ire
01.09.08 | Norma jean is so awful!!
21 is sweet
12 is poo |
Bfhurricane
01.09.08 | August Burns Red are in a genre where its so easy to be generic, but they do an excellent job in my opinion. Your Little Suburbia is in Ruins is one of my favorite songs. |
Metalikane
01.09.08 | Holy shit, Mortification?! Its been a minute since Ive heard someone mention them. I grew up on the oxymoron that is Christian death metal. Their early stuff is better than anything they've done in the past 10 years. Check out Break the Curse, the self titled, or Scrolls of the Megilloth. |
Phil
01.09.08 | Get To-Mera. They only have one album out at the moment. |
spoon_of_grimbo
01.09.08 | thin lizzy - live and dangerous (essentially a live greatest hits, a little too much overdubbing, but it's what got me into them).
anthrax - spreading the disease is the only one ive heard, but it's proper good.
testament - start with their first album (the legacy) and move forward. their fourth/fifth albums are a bit more mainstream, but then the later 90s stuff is a bit more death-metal based. it's all good though!
mastodon - the popular opinion would be to start with leviathan, but i find blood mountain to be a little more varied. both are amazing, although i wouldn't recommend starting with remission.
black dahlia murder - get miasma first, it's their most frantic, with a death:metalcore ratio being weighted much further towards death metal than their other albums.
deftones - white pony or around the fur would be good places to start.
shadows fall - start with the art of balance, then the newest one, then the war within, then the fear will drag you down comp, and then fallout from the war last.
and anyone who recommends any other at the gates album than slaughter of the soul as their best, is a damned fool!
oh and to fill those last two gaps, may i recommend checking out "absolute design" by engel (similar vein to soilwork and in flames), and "white label" by ted maul (imagine the first slipknot album being played by a brutal death metal band, with a few drum n bass samples thrown in). |
Altmer
01.09.08 | Katatonia, Blind Guardian and Meshuggah are amazing. Agalloch, Therion and Wolves in the Throne Room are good as well.
Wintersun, Testament and Anthrax have some good records each but the rest I wouldn't bother with (except maybe Rainbow.) |
smokersdieyounger

Inflames
01.09.08 | 34. Parkway Drive
35. I killed the prom queen |
Zoo
01.09.08 | Anthrax is weak. Testament is where it's at, so you want that.
6, 8, 13, 16, 18, 23, 25, and 31 are all definites. |
BroRape
01.09.08 | the black dahlia murder is one of my favorite bands, but haste the day and light this city sucks. |
TheStarclassicTreatment

HailToTheThief
05.07.08 | Some other heavy stuff you might like is Earth, Pelican, and Melvins. Those three are really solid. But yeah you can't go wrong with Boris, as everyone has already said |
xequalscore
01.21.09 | 9 is disappointing
10 used to be nu-metal (still are possibly?)
11 is awesome
12 is good
14 is good but, Botch is better as someone already said
15 are solid
21 aren't too bad
22 is fantastic
26 pretty much sounds like one big breakdown but, they are cool nonetheless
31 is not particularly my favorite
33 is some Christian rock band that boss likes and I'm pretty sure they suck |
Possessed
06.11.09 | most of these bands suck hard 29 very good 26 good 17 awesome 19 nice 23 great 25 also great 31 nice 4 classic 5 another classic 6 definetly must listen to 1,2,3, are also classic bands and i highly recommend them every other band on the list sucks and don't bother listening to them they're awful and super boring |
