SgtPepper
04.19.13 | Then hard bop and avant-garde might be good places to look. Let me get home, and i'll give you a list with youtube examples.
I'm happy to see so many people taking into jazz lately, it's cool.
Also does it have to be from the 60s? there is some interesting albums that i think youd dig from the 50s as well. |
Ricochet
04.19.13 | yeah im starting to dig it because im playing and learning a lot of basic jazz

04.19.13 | Those are all awesome albums you have listed. I would get all the Wayne Shorter albums on Blue Note- Night Dreamer,
The SoothSayer, The All Seeing Eye, Adam's Apple, Schizophrenia, EtCetera, Speak No Evil(which you have) and the best,
JuJu!
Also, the following Miles Davis albums- Sorcerer, E.S.P, Filles De Kilimanjaro, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, Milestones,
Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way.
Larry Young's Unity and Of Love and Peace. Larry Young is an organist, eventually played with John Mclaughlin and even
Hendrix.
And I highly reccomened Herbie Hancock's Mahawandishi, Sextant and Crossings.

04.19.13 | Also, if you are a guitarist- Any Jim Hall records, but especially his two with Bill Evans. Undercurrent and Intermodulation- These are absolute gems. |

04.19.13 | No problem man. I'm a guitarist too, and I remember when I first started getting into jazz.... I was first into classic rock,
metal... and then I heard all these jazz guys doing these beautiful chords, and I wanted to learn that. It was mind-blowing.
It should take you to a whole new level on your instrument. |
Calc

SgtPepper
04.20.13 | You got some great recs. Sorry, I'm late to this, but here's some to consider:
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else (Bop)
Freddie Hubbard - Ready For Freddie (Bop)
Yusef Lateef - Other Sounds (Has an eastern feel. "Taboo" is my favourtie song by him)
Coltrane - Blue Train (You've probably already heard it, but just in case it's essential. "I'm Old Fashioned" is my favourite performance of his.)
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dreams (Again, must hear)
---for unconventional, yet mildly accessible:
Ornette Coleman - The Shape Of Jazz To Come (avant-garde, 'proto'-free jazz)
Sam Rivers - Contours, Dimensions & Extensions (the first being more accesible)
Cecil Taylor - Unit Structures (Free)
Pharaoh Sanders - Karma (spiritual avant-garde stuff, but relatively accessible)
Some Fusion guitarists to look into:
Al Di Meola (Return to Forever's Where Have I Known You to Romantic Warrior, Solo stuff)
Frank Zappa (HOT RATS |
SgtPepper
04.20.13 | Frank Zappa (HOT RATS - YOU NEED THIS. TRUST ME.)
Pete Cosey (Jammed with Miles during the Agharta/Pangaea time)
Pat Metheny (Amazing composer and guitarist)
John McLaughlin was already mentioned, but yeah, look into Mahavishnu. |
