Disappointments & Surprises Of 2013

15 albums from 2013 that were supposed to be great, but ended being objectively disappointing, and 15 releases that exceeded my expectations or were surprisingly good and better than their average/mediocre predecessors.
1

Disappointments 2013
2Misery Signals
Absent Light

One of the biggest disappointments of 2013. Has some interesting guitar work here and there though, but overall its nothing special. Meanwhile, controller remains as their best album so far.
3Streetlight Manifesto
The Hands That Thieve

Never understood the hype for this album. Its not bad, but nowhere as good as their previous two albums.
4The National
Trouble Will Find Me

Has some nice consistency and great lyrics, but unfortunately lacks the variety and color of their previous releases.
5Counterparts
The Difference Between Hell and Home

Falls flat in comparison with TCWCU.
6All Pigs Must Die
Nothing Violates This Nature

This was supposed to be aoty and I tried loving this as much as its predecessor, but, oh well, still a decent listen.
7Kanye West
Yeezus

Has its moments, but overall feels like Kanye didn't apply as much effort to this as he did to MTDF.
8Light bearer
Silver Tongue

"Boring" is the first word that comes to mind.
9Deerhunter
Monomania

Expectations were always going to be high after Halcyon Digest, and Monomania may have met those if it wasn?t for lead singer Bradford Cox is trying to strip the band back to its original raw sound, while the success of guitarist Lockett Pundt?s side project Lotus Plaza plays a major influence on the other tracks.
10City And Colour
The Hurry And The Harm

If it wasn't for Greens gorgeous voice, this would make the top of this years shitlist.
11Giles Corey
Hinterkaifeck

I hope its no a hit of whats expecting us ahead.
12Sodom
Epitome of Torture

Good band gettin old. Well, it happens to all of us sooner or latter.
13Defeater
Letters Home

"Letters Home" holds the title "disappointment of 2013" so far. Defeater gets defeated, such a shame.
14Foals
Holy Fire

Considering the bands maturation from Antidotes to Total Life Forever, Holy Fire is a step backwards, if not worse, and an indication that their sound has creative limitations.
15And So I Watch You From Afar
All Hail Bright Futures

When good bands do bad things.
16Rotten Sound
Species At War

Yeah, its pretty fast, but thats about it.

Surprises Of 2013
18Full Of Hell
Rudiments Of Mutilation

Brutal vox - check! Fast drums - check! Grinding riffs - check! Sludgy, gritty production - check! Nice consistency - check!!
19Run The Jewels
Run The Jewels

I actually never liked neither Killer Mike nor el-p, so naturally I was approaching this with skepticism and oh boy was I surprised.
20Queens of the Stone Age
...Like Clockwork

An excellent comeback from stagnation and a potential aoty.
21Soilwork
The Living Infinite

I was never to fond of these guys, but this album caught me off-guard. The first half contains some seriously superb riffs.
22Deafheaven
Sunbather

I never knew that there exists someone with a thought of fusing happiness with black metal. Here it is and it sounds great. "Dream house" could become the song of the year.
23Senses Fail
Renacer

Band grew some balls and they are not afraid to show it, show it.
24My Bloody Valentine
m b v

They haven?t lost a beat of innovation or texture mastery and they managed to avoid sounding outdated by sharpening the production considerably.
25Nails
Abandon All Life

A rarity nowadays to find an hardcore album with such level of quality.
26Heaven Shall Burn
Veto

Another great recovery from stagnation. Veto features some of HSB most vicious songs to date, while retaining their trademark melody and coherency.
27Justin Timberlake
The 20/20 Experience

Surprisingly good effort from JT. Has some minor faults and Blue ocean floor makes up for them.
28Darkthrone
The Underground Resistance

Being one of the fewer people who like the new direction the band is going towards, I found this album to be immensely enjoyable.
29August Burns Red
Rescue and Restore

How did they come up with this after the shit that leveler was is beyond me.
30Stratovarius
Nemesis

After a series of mediocre deliveries, stratovarius make their uprising and greet our ears with great guitar work and enjoyable atmosphere.
31James Blake
Overgrown

A fact: Overgrown features everything that his previous album lacked.
32Altar Of Plagues
Teethed Glory And Injury

If someone would ask to describe this album, I probably couldn't do that.
