Overlooked Hip-Hop 2013

Hip Hop that you might have missed, but should go and listen to now.
5PARTYNEXTDOOR
PARTYNEXTDOOR

If you could imagine Frank Ocean's voice making love to The Weeknd's production style while borrowing from Drake's substance, you would get PARTYNEXTDOOR. It does feel a little like PARTYNEXTDOOR is hopping onto the success of The Weeknd and Frank Ocean in a way to make some cash, he still puts out a mixtape that showcases enough great production and vocal wonders to keep interest. Should appeal to any fan of The Weeknd/Frank Ocean/Drake.
4Joey Bada$$
Summer Knights

Probably the most well known off this list, but it seems like Summer Knights went insanely under the radar this year as opposed to his exceedingly well received 1999. Not quite on the level of 1999, possibly because that freshness of mainstream boom-bap has lost a little steam in a year, it does show Joey maturing and slightly venturing into a cloud rap production. Any fan of 1999 or oldschool production styling should be sure to give this a spin.
3Mr.-Muthafuckin-eXquire
Kismet

Possible one of the more strictly intriguing Hip Hop releases this year, eXquire's Kismet borrows from a trip hop aesthetic production style, and an almost inaudible mumbling flow. While it isn't the most digestible album, it is certainly an interesting listen and one worthy of a download.
2The Underachievers
INDIGOI.S.M.

Unlike their Beast Coast contemporaries Joey Bad & Comp. who pay homage to oldschool boom bap beats and rhymes or Flatbush Zombies who rap through a lenses of shock-rap, The Underachievers spit druggy, philosophical wordplay wrapped into double-time rap with clean drops and looping synths. Although based in New York, their sound is much akin to that of Black Hippy of the West Coast and is the closest Hip Hop startup that is close to being on the level of their West Coast peers.
1Kevin Gates
The Luca Brasi Story

Baton Rouge rapper Kevin Gates's mixtape is a story of a man fighting with complexities of dealing with still being a moral human while being a killer. Done through a variety of vocal techniques and trap beats, its an album that you don't want to miss.
