GiaNXGX 10.31.13	oh that's okay, is it the lack of emotional resonance which you find unappealing or something to do with structure or personal memorability? post-ww2 electroacoustic composers and total serialists are those who are usually heralded too 'far out there', or simply unaccesible, for the lack of melodies / bizarre textures. The second Viennese school (Schönberg, Berg, Webern) did utilized serialism without losing the poignant affinity but a lot of 20th century journalists criticized them either as a direct rejection of the compositional language or nationalist socialism stigma (like degenerate art in nazi Germany, ask treeqt.)
Buzzkillr 10.31.13	well yeah, it's the fact that it's more like the composers are applying formulas rather than creatively composing pieces that renders the music cold, emotionless and inhuman. there's no real connection, and the dissonance just makes it less appealing, although I can still enjoy music from the likes of shönberg and his disciples. don't get me wrong, dissonant music isn't by default unappealing to me, I actually enjoy quite a lot of it, but I do find most serialism way too 'far out there', as you put it.

While the majority of listeners who find atonal music unpleasant simply aren't giving it time to sink in as a system of measures, or aesthetically unfold, once overcome the unfamiliarity renders beauty and abstraction (or beauty as abstraction). Composers such as Nono crafted leftist political statements, these weren't beautiful, not 'conventionally' beautiful. Atonality however can exist in more mundane or uneccentric contexts and still remain purer to itself (eg; Messiaen's modal serialism, and Boulez). have you ever heard of Sofia Gubaidulina's music?
