03.01.14 | I love how that outrageously anally retentive link dev shared refers to rustie as glo-step while bitching about incorrect sub-genre labelling "ITS A PLAGUE!!!!" ridiculous.
Dev probably won't read this but getting sack stitched and saying certain genre terms don't exist and that others are improperly labelled all the time is actually so preposterous and pointless that i need to say something. And this goes for lots of other people on the site anyways too. Yes, it can help you feed your ego and make you think you are king of electrohill sitting on your throne of ambience in your deep-castle-step stroking your post-golden dubstaff but the whole reason sub genres exist is to be helpful descriptors so you can better describe to someone else how something sounds. The only thing that matters is if I can look at an albums tags and accurately decide whether I would like to listen to it or not.
So whether or not 'future-garage' or 'post-dubstep' gives you a hemorrhoid or not and makes you want to blow your 8-bit brains out you should stfu about it because nobody cares and its wayyy more helpful to people who are looking for descriptors than bitching about false genres and correcting other people for years and years TRUTHS

Also that article wasn't in any way insinuating that "glo-step" was actually a thing. The crux of the article is valid though, that anything that isn't immediately accessible is automatically assigned to "deep house". Read: 95% of the recs in this thread |

Deviant.
08.01.14 | "so what's the difference between deep house and normal house? more.... bass focused or something?? idk"
It's house that focuses much more on elements of soul, funk... even gospel. Tempo is normally slower, it's not reaaaallly designed for dancing to, though you can "move" to it. Midtown 120 Blues by DJ Sprinkles is arguably the seminal deep house album, but the genre's been around for years

08.01.14 | Yeah, prog house is a thing. There's really nothing to it beyond the obvious extended track length, long build up and breakdown sections, but yeah it's a thing. It was all the rage (rave?) back when GateCrasher was still a thing as well

Deviant.
08.01.14 | On the one hand I think it's great that more and more people are being exposed to electronic music, even if half of them are hearing it for the first time through less than glamorous ways (EDM). But yeah, this new wave of listeners (and producers) really has hindered the way that this particular musical narrative has grown. Incorrectly labelling things, creating new labels for anything that doesn't fit into an apparent rigid description, appropriating labels for other sounds. Like I'm definitely the old fart who will stand there and say "no, this is this and not that", but half of it is due to the fact that I kind of approach music (and specifically electronic music) from an historian point of view; I'm not just interested in the sound, but its history as well. So when someone comes along and says "chillstep" or "drumstep" or "post dubstep" I wanna shoot them in the face (metaphorically of course...) |
Slut
08.01.14 | well as potsy said the whole purpose of genre tags is to be able to tell someone what kind of music it is. but i think you have to be mindful of who you are talking to. like if you take punk, i would never mention 'crust' to anyone who doesn't even listen to punk, they would have no clue what the fuck i'm talking about. but to someone here they would knew instantly kind of music it is.
when it comes to this, if someone mentions 'chill step'
1. what larger genre of electronic music does it come from
2. is it even a necessary tag?
the problem is i don't know if it represents a large movement, full of individual artists who do their own thing, or just a couple of people who just want to randomly give their music their own genre tag |

To me (and you have to remember that this is just me talking, don't take anything as gospel) it's just a much more relaxed and chilled variant of dubstep music. Not the buzzsaw EDM antics of commercial dubstep, but the swinging bass heavy halfstep of the genre's origins. So, is it easier to label it chillstep on a site like Youtube than to say "well, it's just really relaxed and chilled out dubstep"? Yeah, probably, but I still hate the name |
Slut
08.01.14 | it just seems unnecessary. i think the major problem is that the the dubsteps have the same name, but they're so different. so when someone says chillstep i have no fucking clue as to whether it's some weird brostep sub genre or dubstep.
like if brostep was just called that by everyone, something like chill step seems like it would be self explanitory. so in this case the word 'chillstep' doesn't help me and it fails as a genre tag. even to someone who at least kinda somewhat understand SOME things |
