Muisc4Life26
04.27.14 | Sweet list man. I'm really glad Tomorrow Never Knows, Because and Happiness Is A Warm Gun is on here. |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @scottpilgrim10: Help! above Sgt. Pepper? Interesting... |
laughingman22
04.27.14 | @onirium yeah I know glad you picked she's so heavy (greatest song ever made) and two other super under appreciated songs |
scottpilgrim10
04.27.14 | Sgt. Pepper only has 2 amazing songs IMO |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @laughingman: Yeah, people usually tend to take Something and Come Together as favorites from Abbey Road. They're both very good songs, but I think the whole Abbey Road Medley is underrated. Also, Because is so beautiful and perfect, and I Want You is one of my all-time favorite songs |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @scottpilgrim: Help! had only one amazing song |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "Help! had only one amazing song"
I know you're probably talking about "Yesterday", but my favorite from Help! is either "Help!" or "It's Only Love" soooo |

I love their darker stuff personally. |
scottpilgrim10
04.27.14 | Help has a ton of great songs like Help!, Yesterday, You're gonna lose that girl, It's Only Love, and I've just seen a face |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @Onirium: My favorites from Sgt. are probably "Fixing a Hole", "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!", and "Good Morning Good Morning" ...
"I Am the Walrus" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" > "A Day in the Life"
|
scottpilgrim10
04.27.14 | IDK the only ones I love out of those are She's leaving Home and A Day in the Life. Lucy is good too though. Within You Without You kind of sucks. Sgt. Peppers is so overrated and Help! is really underrated IMO. |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @Ars: A Day in the Life is my definiton of perfection |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" ...why am I the only one who absolutely loves that song? Also I'd probably like "A Day in
the Life" more if it wasn't for the Paul part. |
Onirium
04.27.14 | I mean, everything is just perfect A Day in the Life; the beautiful melodies, the incredible lyrics, the wonderful change of tone in the middle, and the absolute climax in the end. |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @Ars: Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite is a fun song, but I don't think any of they wrote it with the idea of an awesome song in my mind. It's more like a very cool experimentation imo |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "It's more like a very cool experimentation"
That's what makes it great dude. Experimentation tends to win me over more than anything (as long as its pulled off well.) |
scottpilgrim10
04.27.14 | Onirium you like Drive my Car more than In My Life? |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @Ars: I don't mean experimentation is not great, it actually is. Experimental music is often very interesting. But The Benefit of Mr. Kite is just a fun song and that's what I think the Beatles thought about it too |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @scottpilgrim: Actually, it's been a while since I gave Rubber Soul a proper listen. I just checked the tracklist and picked the one I remembered I liked. I'll check it out though, I might have only forgot it. |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | Still my favorite from the album. Why does the favorite have to always be the heavy hitter? Sometimes the light fun songs are the best y'know? At least I think so...
|
Onirium
04.27.14 | Look, Ars, I'm not saying you're wrong, or anything. But I think for an awesome band like them, it's kind of sad to say that their best is the fun and light song rather than the well-made and deep song. To me, The Benefit of Mr. Kite is just a very interesting song that was not made to be the central piece of the album |
scottpilgrim10
04.27.14 | Have you guys played The Beatles Rock Band? |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "was not made to be the central piece of the album"
That doesn't matter at all when picking a favorite. Not even a little.
"it's kind of sad to say that their best is the fun and light song rather than the well-made and deep song. "
I disagree completely. Favorite songs have less to do with what the band is thinking and WAY MORE with what the listener is thinking.
My problem with everyone having the same favorite is that It means everyone thinks the same or at least similar. When it comes to art, thinking the same is what's sad.
Ooh this is getting philosophical. |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @scott: Yeah, it was a good game. I still prefer to actually play their songs with real instruments, though. |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @scottpilgrim10: I used to love rock band when I was younger. Slowly liked it less when I got a real guitar though... |
Onirium
04.27.14 | "When it comes to art, thinking the same is what's sad."
Thinking the same is not necessarily worse than voluntarily picking thinking the opposite of everyone. I mean, if the song is good, why couldn't everyone like it? Do you mean when a lot of people like the same song, this song is necessarily bad? I agree thinking differently is often what makes a person interesting but people can share similarities in their taste and still be different from everyone else, you know.
"Favorite songs have less to do with what the band is thinking and WAY MORE with what the listener is thinking."
I completely agree, and you completely have the right to have the favorite you want. Stop taking everything personal, please |
scottpilgrim10
04.27.14 | Yeah it was fun while it lasted, but it barely had any good songs. That really pissed me off. I still
can't play the guitar tho, so that doesn't really phase me much.
My favorites most of the time seem to be the singles, or at least one of the singles. But For No One
is my favorite Beatles song along with Something so really it should just depend on the quality of the
song.
|
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "voluntarily picking thinking the opposite of everyone"
I didn't. I naturally prefer "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" to which you responded with complete surprise and found it sad.
"Stop taking everything personal, please"
Oh, I'm not. I just love to debate. |
scottpilgrim10
04.27.14 | Woah I didn't even notice Sgt. Pepper was number 2 on your list.
I really don't get why it's so loved. |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Okay, then we're cool. You're probably not "voluntarily thinking the opposite of everyone" but I kinda loved my punchline.
"I naturally prefer "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" to which you responded with complete surprise and found it sad."
I respect your opinions, but I was naturally surprised by the fact that you preferred it to what I believe are the album's strongest songs.
Let's move on to another subject, as I feel this one can't really go further. Why didn't you like Abbey Road that much? |
Friday13th
04.27.14 | Good ranking dude |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | It's not that I didn't like it. (I gave it a 3.5, though I'll probably bump it to a 4 if I'm in the right mood and keep it there)
I just really prefer my top 5 album choices more. "Oh! Darling", "Mean Mr. Mustard", "Polythene Pam" and "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" are awesome though. Of course I like your 3 favorites from Abbey as well.
I can't say that "Octopus's Garden" and "Carry the Weight" are very good... |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Sorry I can't stop being surprised by your favorites. I agree Octopus's Garden is a very very bad song, but it's definitely the only bad song of the album imo. I just kind of like the whole ambiance Abbey Road has. To me, it's like The White Album but without filler and with a decent length |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "To me, it's like The White Album but without filler and with a decent length"
Never minded the length of The White Album. Also, other than "Birthday" (aka one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life) and "Good Night", every song on there is essential for me. |
scottpilgrim10
04.27.14 | I like Octopus Garden :( |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Okay, don't be a hipster and don't tell me you like Revolution 9 (I mean, it has nothing to do with anything else they ever did. I respect Lennon for doing this kind of experimental stuff and everything, but you know). Also, shit like Rocky Racoon, Don't Pass Me By, Why Don't We Do It In the Road?, Bungalow Bill are all filler to me. Actually, I don't mind the album's lenght, but more the way they filled this length. There still are a lot of their best songs on it, and this is why it's 3rd in my list |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @scott: Well, it's a cute fun song. I kind of like it too, but not the same way I like the others |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "Okay, don't be a hipster and don't tell me you like Revolution 9"
It's far from the best on the album, but as someone who LOVES Zappa's early sound colleges, how can I not like a Beatles one?
Why Don't We Do It In the Road? is raw as fuck dude, I love it's simplicity too. Bungalow Bill is pretty fun so I like it.
Rocky Racoon and Don't Pass Me By aren't my favorites, but they're far from bad.
I can agree on 1 thing. It is my 3rd favorite. |
Friday13th
04.27.14 | I hear it's your BIRTHDAY. Well happy birthday TO YOU! |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Yeah, Revolution 9 and sound collages are a cool idea, but you know, it's just not very "Beatle-esque". But what I don't like about some songs on The White Album is that we feel way too much that they've been composed by a particular person and for this particular person; not with the band in mind.
Have you ever seen the movie Across the Universe? |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Yes, we're going to a party party
Yes, we're going to a party party
Yes, we're going to a party party

04.27.14 | The Beatles lol what are you 80?? |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "but you know, it's just not very "Beatle-esque""
Sometimes I feel like you miss the point of experimentation...
Also, I've seen Across the Universe. It's a great movie. The only thing wrong with it was that Bono sang my favorite Beatles song. Fuck Bono... |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Birthday has a great moment though, at 1:49, when George and Paul do some cool guitar/bass work. Okay it lasts 5 seconds, but you know, it makes you forget that some awful keyboard rape is going to arrive right after |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @Onirium: Can you do me a big favor and listen to this Zappa sound collage? It's only 6 minutes and 20 seconds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1HLwhYc_Xk |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @Ars: The point of experimentation is to try new textures and sounds and explore new ways of making music. The Beatles were really experimenting a lot during their whole career, but it was not this kind of experimentation. This is Lennon's work, and Lennon is my favorite Beatle, and it's really interesting. But it's not the kind of experimentation the Beatles were doing.
Also, how can you say someone misses the point of experimentation when you've never jammed Klaus Schulze, John Cage or Philip Glass? I mean, Zappa was experimental, but he wasn't the only one out there, and certainly not the best avant-garde composer (no offense to Zappa here, he probably rocks a lot better than John Cage) |
Onirium
04.27.14 | @Ars: Do me a favor and listen to this Klaus Schulze avant-garde masterpiece. It's only 24 minutes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHTaCVTqolA
|
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @Onirium: I will, if you also agree to listen to my link. |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Yeah, I will. I just want to make you understand that experimental music goes further than just Zappa. Avant-garde is a serious genre, and a lot of incredible composers have been part of the movement and make very interesting music. Zappa does too, btw |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | 7 minutes in and this is basically early ambient so far... |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Okay maybe Schulze was not the perfect example.
Try this if you want:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Stu7h7Qup8 |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Also, your rec is cool, interesting and well-made, I didn't know this side of Zappa |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | Yeah, Zappa has a lot of sides dude. That's why I love his stuff. There's always a curveball. Try this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUvH3xf0e-I |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @Onirium: Also, what's experimental about Glassworks? It's cool piano music, but I'm 6 minutes in and I fail to see
anything innovative about it so far... WAIT scratch that, the second track is different... |
Onirium
04.27.14 | What's experimental is the way it's constructed. It builds around consonant harmony, gradual transformation of a recurring theme, and often repetition of musical phrases or motifs. It's all about making a single theme or melody evolve in a lot of different ways |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @Onirium: Okay...I can't say this is the type of experimentation I really go for, but I acknowledge it's importance. What you're describing is ambient music in a way, which honestly never registered with me. Did you listen to that second song I linked? |
Onirium
04.27.14 | "What you're describing is ambient music"
Glassworks was not made to be listened to as background music, so I think really isn't ambient music. It is minimalist music, which is a very interesting, both complex and simple music that requires the listener's attention to be fully appreciated, not just a bunch of sounds that creates an ambience for supper. Some ambient music can be interesting, though, like Brian Eno, but Glass is much more sophisticated and very beautiful.
"Did you listen to that second song I linked?"
Yeah, that thing that sounded like cheap 8-bit music? I guess you'll have to explain me why this is good because I don't get it |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @Onirium: I've heard Music for Airports, not my thing. Still listening to Philip Glass, can't say I love this either.
Also about the "cheap 8-bit thing" It's amazing because it's jazz-fusion made on this cool instrument called the synclavier, the entire song, every single part, was made with it. The rest of the album, Jazz from Hell, further develops use of that instrument in a remarkable number of ways. Basically he uses it as a guitar, bass, horns, etc. It's far from your average 8-bit music, and way more complex. |
theacademy
04.27.14 | hahahahahahahhahhahahaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
die |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Okay, then I see we don't like our avant-garde the same way. I prefer the composers that make extensive use of music theory and build around a certain idea or theme. This is why experimental is so interesting, there are so many possibilities and ways to make it.
Then, your thing about Zappa is a lot respectable. Sorry if I offended you or your god |
theacademy
04.27.14 | do dance gavin dance next
rank them rank a good band instead |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | "This is why experimental is so interesting, there are so many possibilities and ways to make it."
Well I agree there.
"Sorry if I offended you or your god"
That's a very funny and mildly pretentious statement, I don't know what to make of that...
Zappa does use certain ideas and themes. The entire album (save a guitar solo track) is based around the synclavier. You know Zappa won a grammy for Jazz from Hell? His only ever in his lifetime. |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Very funny and mildly pretentious? Yeah that's me
No but seriously it was a joke, I also have my "musical heroes" like you with Zappa. I would have reacted the same way if you had compared Steven Wilson or Sigur Ros to 8-bit music (I hardly think you would do that, though) |
ArsMoriendi
04.27.14 | @Onirium: I think you'd like a lot of Zappa stuff actually. The college you liked is from an album called We're Only in It for the Money, you should give it a check some time. The rest of the album is a bit different though...
Also fair enough. |
Onirium
04.27.14 | Okay I'll check this out tomorrow |

04.27.14 | if swap 2 and 5 then it's pretty much my ranking too |
