| Top 5 Jams Based On Lyrical Content
As a musician and lyricist myself, I believe a song is only as good as the
sum of its parts. There can be some great instrumentals, but if the lyrical
content is bad, it detracts from the experience dramatically. Here are my
five favorite lyrics. | 5 | Nirvana Downer
Sickening pessimist hypocrite master
Conservative communist apocalyptic bastard
Thank you dear god for putting me on this earth
I feel very privileged in debt for my thirst
Cobain's quintessential phantasmagorical political effort. Was he indeed a man of
astute political sagacity? | 4 | A Perfect Circle Orestes
Metaphor for a missing moment
Pull me into your perfect circle
One womb, one shape, one resolve
Liberate this will to relieve us all
In greek mythology, Orestes' mother murdered his father. Since the Furies were
involved, he had to avenge his father's death, but murdering his mother would
land him the same punishment as not avenging his father. Kind of a mind-boggler
there. Elegant, graceful and alluring. | 3 | Alice In Chains Down In A Hole
Whether it's about drug addiction or a lover of Cantrell's, these lyrics are indelible
and have an ineradicable connection to the listener. | 2 | Pearl Jam Immortality
Holier than thou, how?
Surrendered executed anyhow
Pearl Jam's lugubrious ode to Cobain is both ardently poetic and fervently
discommodious. | 1 | Brand New Degausser
When we were made, we were set apart
Life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins
The storm is coming, the storm is coming in
Elegiac, poignant and indelible. Chills, my friend. Every time. | |

04.30.14 | i own a thesaurus, too. | tempest--
04.30.14 | lyrics are lame listen to the riffs oh you jam brand new ok here is what a riff is youre welcome dude :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHISn_DCmc0 | mandan
04.30.14 | Can't go wrong with 2 & 3, but I consider lyrics as complimentary rather than essential. If they're embarrassingly bad though (especially in subgenres like prog and metal) then yeah, they can detract from the experience. But I'm not the most demanding in that regard, they have to really suck for me to dislike the song because of them. | Rowan5215
04.30.14 | Every song should be Floyd on this list
Also fuck off Lloyd | JohnnyoftheWell
04.30.14 | "Life is a test and I get bad marks" is possibly my least favourite Brand New lyric tbh... | Rowan5215
04.30.14 | Yeah Degausser is one of the weakest BN songs lyrically
Jesus is the best yo | StormIsComing
04.30.14 | If you need a thesaurus to understand, then by all means, use it.
So what if you consider lyrics "complimentary"?
Floyd tracks have great lyrics, which is why if this list were comprised of the top ten, you'd see Floyd. Alas, it's my top five.
Degausser is brilliant from beginning to end and it was hard choosing between that, Jesus Christ and Okay I Believe You. | ffs
04.30.14 | brainbombs discog | zakalwe
04.30.14 | Cobain himself was embarrassed by the Downer lyrics. | StormIsComing
04.30.14 | He felt that they didn't fit into the grunge image he was forced to portray. I wouldn't necessarily say he was embarrassed. | zakalwe
04.30.14 | Hmmm no I think he said that he was ranting about stuff that he didn't have the first idea about politically. He was just throwing words about that he thought sounded relevant and cool without knowing the actual meaning of what it was he was saying. |
