Slave to the Grind
1991 was a huge year for me musically. I had just turned 13, was playing guitar and riding bmx all the time. That was the year I discovered drinking, smoking, sex and a few other things that mark a transition from 'childhood' to 'teen'. Even though my musical tastes were moving towards heavier music, this album took over that summer. For years to come the songs on here would weave in and out of events of my life. | | 9 |  | Death
Human
1991 is going to be a theme here towards the top. I was on a class trip to Boston with thirty dollars in spending money in my pocket. At a Tower Records (or maybe it was Sam Goody?) near Quincy Market I was shopping for tapes. I bought two that day, one was a copy of Cowboys from Hell; the other... Human from Death. It was my first real experience with death metal and paved the way for hundreds of awesome bands, shows and friends. | | 8 |  | Overkill
Horrorscope
1991, the start of my favorite musical era. This album, along with the two that follow make it one of my favorite years. I have lived and died for this album since my first tape purchase when it was released. Shit, I have the album cover tattooed on my right arm. I've seen the band live more than 20 times, own every record, coutless concert shirts, patches, etc. One of the best albums, any genre, hands down. | | 7 |  | Green Day
Dookie
This was an odd time in my life. While I was heavily into death and thrash metal, this was the realase that I use to define what high school was to me. A dark period for me emotionally, as I grappled with figuing out what life was supposed to be about. I jammed these simple, fun songs with bands at school, and in general just zones out with some weed and my own personal reflections while spinning this over and over. While I don't listen to it often; a nice warm nostalgic buzz arises anytime it comes on. | | 6 |  | Slayer
South of Heaven
Really this should be a tie with Season in the Abyss, if I had to choose one though, it is SoH. Learning guitar, these were the riffs I cut my teeth on. There was nothing better than playing with friends and blasting these tunes out all day long. Even as an adult, I can't help but grab my old guitar and start jamming away. Master of Puppets
In 1987 my cousins (who were all way older than I) took me to see Metallica play. I had no idea what a Metallica was, the most metal music I had heard was old Sabbath 45's that had been left at my house. My mind was blown, I spent the next day trying to convince my parents to take me to the store to buy this on tape. I ended up trading away some GI Joes and Thundercats to a friend that had this to make me a dub. | | 4 |  | Megadeth

My skater friend showed up with this at the local ramp where I was riding BMX. I remember having him make me a crappy copy of the copy that he had and listening to it until I had saved enough cash to buy a copy for myself. Opus Eponymous
A later addition in life. A friend of mine that I often "talk metal" with started raving on and on about this new band he was into. Three or four months later, bored and surfing around YouTube I finally decided to check it out. Once I found them (this was in '10 and Ghost wasn't well known) I was blown away. They have since become an obsession. I own 18 Ghost shirts hahaha I'm also going to see them for the 5th time this Saturday. Cannot wait. | | 2 |  | Marvelous 3

My 20's were an odd time. I was listening to a ton of glam and hard rock. Like, way more than most people. I was playing with a band called Black Rose Garden (I'll bet you can still google our song Porno Star that was on a comp.) Being a huge fan of Southgang, I had wondered what happened to them, enter the Marvelous 3. Here were songs that applied to me, and my life. Maybe not 100%, but I understood where Butch was coming from. Cigarette Lighter Love Song is hands down the best ballad ever. | | 1 |  | Sublime

05.14.14 | The best was a weekend ago last year, at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. If you check out the official video for Monstrance Clock they used footage from that show :D They absolutely destroy live, and I can't wait to see them in 3 days at the Best Buy in NYC. |
