Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

One of my favourite albums. I was originally just going to make a comment where I talk about each one of the songs on it but eh it ended up so long I think it would be better fit for a list.
1Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas...

Storm - I vividly remember my first time listening to this album. It was all so new
to me, the concept, the style, everything. I don't even think I had a heard a post-
rock album in full before, maybe All Is Violent or The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead
Place, but just this thing was so sprawling and massive, I remember how
challenging
it was for me, it was around the time I really started getting into music, rather
than just listening to it every once in a while. I actually only listened to the
first half, just because of how long it was. I told myself I would finish it another
time, which I inevitably did just because of how much it fucking blew my mind. I
just remember laying in my bed listening to this song for the very first time, in my
bathrobe (for whatever reason) and just being in awe. It was a really unforgettable
experience.

Static - At my old school I didn't have very many friends. Idk maybe it's because i
was/am a neurotic and weird cunt, but I had a tough time getting along or carrying
on conversations with the majority of people there. Most days at lunch I would
hang
out with two of my friends in this place called the "sky bridge". It had fantastic
acoustics. Something we liked to do was move the plant that was in the corner of
the
room into the center of the room, just because it would usually confuse whoever
would walk through. It was kind of snobby school so a lot of the people there were
boring and overly-normal. I would hide my kindle in the plant and play Static on
full volume, and it was always funny and entertaining for me and my friends to
watch
the reactions of people that would walk into the room, especially at the climax. It
obviously wasn't that much of an out-there or extreme thing to do but it was a
simple thing that I found a lot of joy in and gives me fond memories of the song.

Sleep - This was without a doubt my initial favourite on the album. With the iconic
sample and the jaw-dropping crescendos coupled with accessibility, it's no surprise
it's the most popular on the album. I remember one day my mom took me and my
step-
dad to some church that was pretty far from our house, not sure what CD I played
on
the car ride, I think Young Team, or maybe another Mogwai album. She went there
to
give some presentation or something about ASL, idk she was meeting with friends
and
colleagues and she brought a DVD with some scene from South Park on it, don't
remember too many details about why we went there. While all that boring stuff
was
going on me and my step-dad just hung out in some other room. I remember I
played
Sleep on his iPad and we just talked about what was around us, it's rare that me
and
him spend time together so it was a really nice experience, and it wouldn't have
been complete without this song.

Antennas To Heaven - My favourite. At my old school my first class of the day was
"Theatre Production", which was the most blow-off class I've ever had, I usually
just sat there and listened to music or played on my kindle. The teacher was really
cool though, he was just a cheery fat guy, and sometimes he would bring his PS3
to
school and we would play fighting games during lunch. One day in his class he
asked
me to go down to the storage room and bring something back, I don't remember
what. I
purposely left the door unlocked so that I could get back into the room later. I
think it was my 4th period class, Mandarin, that I skipped to go and hang out in
that room. I made sure all the lights were off, it was pitch black, I couldn't see my
hand in front of my face. I lied down on the floor and put my headphones on and
listened to Antennas To Heaven. It was an amazing experience. Being in a really
shitty time in my life, experiencing that song, in what seemed like an endless
expanse of darkness, was something that I won't forget. This is one of the most
beautiful songs I have ever had the pleasure of hearing, and I refuse to believe
that it means as much to anyone else as it means to me.
