08.14.14 | I just finished reading an article about how the number of people taking Maths and Philosophy A-Levels/Uni Majors has surpassed English for the first time in decades. Very cool. Good luck man. I'm from the US, but I am doing the same pathway. It's tough as fuck, but it's also extremely fun. |

english > philosophy
"Are tuition fees in GB as bad as they're in the U.S.? I mean, given that it's pretty much the same basic system."
no but they're still much worse than elsewhere in europe. £9k a year |
CalculatingInfinity
08.14.14 | @Conor: Thanks :D
@itchy: I remember, good thing I joined :]
@Woifhorde: £9000 ($15000) a year for tuition fees, around £15000 ($25000) a year with everything together. So ya, fees in the UK are beyond horrific. |
TenSecondsToThink
08.14.14 | Nice, I have spent the last year inside my room doing absolutely nothing and I'm starting in October too. Sometimes life is great in Germany |
Wolfhorde
08.14.14 | Yikes, does not sound like fun. How do you finance it if your parents aren't offspring of some kind of aristocrat?
"english > philosophy"
Both tend to attract pretentious people and aren't easily applied in the job world. |
CalculatingInfinity
08.14.14 | "Yikes, does not sound like fun. How do you finance it if your parents aren't offspring of some kind of aristocrat?"
You're telling me, my parent's heart sank when they saw the fees. |
anarchistfish
08.14.14 | "Both tend to attract pretentious people and aren't easily applied in the job world."
lol true
philosophy students are worse in my experience tho, and english was probably the most useful A level I did |
Gyromania
08.14.14 | agreed with wolfhorde. i've known a lot of pretentious as fuck english students, but more of them have been philosophy majors.
both degrees are pointless. can't justify dropping thousands upon thousands of dollars on an education i can get on the internet |
Wolfhorde
08.14.14 | I don't even know what the hell an "A level" is.
"philosophy students are worse in my experience tho"
True, but that's probably just the nature of the thing. Especially when no one pays attention to (historical or personal)
"You're telling me, my parent's heart sank when they saw the fees."
Understandably. We fortuntutely don't have tuition fees anymore, only administrative fees that are relatively low and our version of "student loans" are capped at 10k or ~20% max of what you have to pay back.

Wolfhorde
08.14.14 | wait what only came in 3 years ago? tuiton fees or A-levels? |

08.14.14 | are they some kind of test or something? or is that more like a "preparation" period in secondary education/after high school?
yikes, how'd that happen? |
CalculatingInfinity
08.14.14 | @mena: Thanks man, there's been an arguement in the school between a Maths and a World Development student actually on the topic of 'proper' subjects. Rather amusing. |
CalculatingInfinity
08.14.14 | @Wolf: High School in the UK is 11-16 years old education where you do GCSE's, 16-18 years old education is done in Six Form/College where you do A-Levels. Then it's degree level. |
anarchistfish
08.14.14 | "are they some kind of test or something? or is that more like a "preparation" period in secondary education/after high school?"
yeah so you do A levels in 2 years between school and uni and the results generally dictate your uni place
"yikes, how'd that happen?"
conservatives man. cutting the deficit and all that
plus this country has a tendency to ignore the opinions of the youth. |

CalculatingInfinity
08.14.14 | @Choocy: Thanks man. If it makes you feel any better, I did horrific in year 12. If you did bad then you can definately fix it, change and strengthen your work ethic. It'll be a hard year, but you'll do great in the end and it will all be worth it. I wish you the best for next year :] |
CalculatingInfinity
08.14.14 | Wow...a feature :o

08.14.14 | @Tuna: Thanks, also good luck for your GCSE results (which I have full confidence you'll do fine in). A-Level is where it starts getting serious. |
ChoccyPhilly
08.14.14 | Yeah, he's right. GCSEs purely exist to get you into college/sixth form or apprenticeships. Once you're in, they're pretty much irrelevant. Good luck anyway. |

08.14.14 | Congratulations. My experience at Uni was almost exclusively negative. I felt completely fleeced by the whole thing - and I was lucky enough to be arrive in the final year before fees trebled. The whole higher education system is a mess, but good luck regardless. |
CalculatingInfinity
08.14.14 | @Ail: Thanks, I've been told before it's a mess but I've just got to deal with it really. I worked for this so I might as well make the best of it. |
anarchistfish
08.14.14 | does your first year count towards your degree
cos if it doesn't, don't work yourself /too/ hard |
Snake.
08.14.14 | (m/)ath |
AliW1993
08.14.14 | I don't get worked up about results like most other people, but I felt a much greater sense of achievement from may A-Levels than I did from my 2:1 degree. |
CalculatingInfinity
08.14.14 | It doesn't fish I believe, but just for my own stupid mindset I'll try as hard in the first year then any of the other years. Most of it will be just getting used to Uni rather then working your arse off really compared the other years probably. |
AliW1993
08.14.14 | First years don't count. In most cases second years don't count either. I probably wouldn't have
passed if my dismal second year grades had counted for anything. |
beefshoes
08.14.14 | I am a philosophy/math major damn it.
I see why so many people rip on the former (because many of the stereotypes definitely apply to
some), but saying it's unpractical in the private sector is horseshit. One of the most important
things that you'll learn in a reputable business program is that you can make anything marketable,
it just takes critical thinking and a willingness to experiment and not being terrified of failure.
Philosophy isn't really metaphysics anymore (in my program at least). It revolves around seeing and
understanding why and how cultures go about doing the things that they do whether it be through
ethics, religion, politics, or jurisprudence; that and learning how to think critically and
logically. Plus, there are a massive number of CEOs in the
private sector that were philosophy BAs or MAs. I just get sick of seeing "philosophy is a useless
major" because it's just not true. It depends on the person and the choices that they make. If a
physics or a business major is lazy and takes the easy way out of everything, their chances of
success won't be that great in comparison to someone who makes an honest effort by working their ass
off and making valuable contacts. |
Wolfhorde
08.14.14 | ^ No fucking shit, Sherlock. Every degree is valuable if you're ridiculously good at what you do, generally have a good skill set/education and can market yourself. (particularly when you're willing to relocate for your job)
That's not the point. And generalizing what you specifically do in philosophy seems a bit far fetched considering the vast differences between educational institutions - not to mention educational institutions of different nations. What is being referred to is simply that it's way easier to practically apply other degrees (or should I say skills).
Oh yeah, and just because someone studies something doesn't mean they actually have a comprehensive understanding of it. Degrees, formal education and titles ultimately don't matter if the skills, understanding or knowledge to back it up are lacking. |
anarchistfish
08.14.14 | every philosophy student i know is addicted to ketamine |
beefshoes
08.14.14 | Wolfhorde, you essentially just reiterated what I said; hence the "(in my program at least)".
Yeah, if you study at an institution that focuses on nothing but existential and critical twaddle that
only a small collection of academics and their followers give two shits about, then yeah, it's not
going to be very practical in the private sector. Most programs in the United States, Canada, and the
rest of the English speaking diaspora do not however with some small exceptions like the New School in
NYC. I'm not claiming to be expert either (I'm a sophomore), but a decent amount of research at the
least. |
DrMaximus
08.14.14 | Gratz on the feature, dude |
menawati
08.14.14 | "First years don't count."
Depends on the university, I'm pretty sure all the University of London ones do course unit system where 1st and 2nd year count a bit (like 10% and 20% towards final degree class). Might be worth checking at University of Scousers how they do it . |
