09.02.14 | This list is disturbingly bad. It's so bad that it's an eyesore.
Arctic Monkeys and Queens of the Stone Age would probably on a decent list with this title.
|
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | Yeah, plus Arcade Fire plus Radiohead (maybe too old already) |

QotSA, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, and Radiohead maybe? |

09.02.14 | Don't forget Muse, Linkin Park, and 30 Seconds To Mare, they are the biggest bands in the world right now. |
Snowdog808
09.02.14 | 1 is so horrible. Mastodon would be a better choice considering this site has rated their albums so many times and most of them like them. |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | Actually I have to confess now. To be honest with you guys my vote would go to
Bloodhound Gang
Jonas Brothers
Emmure
brokeNCYDE
|
Artuma
09.02.14 | what is the point of this thread? |
SharkTooth
09.02.14 | 1 works, as they're a big band today, they might be extremely dull, but they fit the bill
2 is hardly relevant these days, nobody really talks about the latest from these guys because nobody really cares about them anymore
3 is 'indie'-pop, not modern rock
4 was out of the picture 20 years ago man, Alice in Chains is much more appropriate than these guys when talking about grunge
so yeah this list gets a 1/4, keep up with the program plz |
SharkTooth

Hey, Bloodhound Gang isn't that bad! |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | ~Hey, Bloodhound Gang isn't that bad~
Yeah "Hooray For Boobies" had it's moments, but
a) noone cares what they do today since they do practically nothing
b) you can't take them seriously
c) "Hefty Fine" was embarassingly bad |
Snowdog808

Not even many of the low standard so-called professional critics even like them, let alone the high standard staff contained on this site. |

a more cringe worthy statement than the list itself

There are actually critics, who like them??? It's the worst shit I've heard and I seriously doubt it could get any worse |

09.02.14 | nirvana and u2 are fuckin old!
and there really isnt a "big 4 of modern rock" rock aint the preferred genre with the kids anymore, no one buys music, etc etc there'll never be a rock album that everyone owns ever again! scary |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | @sonic
That doesn't mean there's no big 4. It's less obvious and more debatable, who those are, but there are still plenty of rock bands that have their fair share of both, critical praise and much media attention. |
Drummerboy123
09.02.14 | Foo Fighters? |
Snowdog808
09.02.14 | Two lists ago he made his trolling obvious by praising a One Direction album. |
sonictheplumber
09.02.14 | first off "modern rock" is too broad
second, no rock band gets a lot of media attention period except like, cnn documentaries on the beatles, and that dont count
|
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | If we take "modern" as a term that at least describes the last ten years, maybe everything since the new millenium, then there are quite a few who got played endlessly and had quite an influence on stupid 14 year old kids (i.e. me) like Green Day or Linkin Park |
sonictheplumber
09.02.14 | well yeah kids still liked rock until like 2004 or 2005 but i cant think of anything nowadays thats critically acclaimed, popular with regular folks, and rock. it just aint 1974 anymore...
someone might say arcade fire cause they won the grammys so that means theyre famous but normal people dont listen to or know about arcade fire |
sonictheplumber
09.02.14 | i remember back when i was in school...hey heard the new zep? got the new floyd? this blue oyster cult really rocks...you goin to tull this friday?
not to sound like your typical old man here but it was a great time to be alive. we listened to records start to finish and talkin about em with your pals was like askin someone about breaking bad now, totally normal.
|
sonictheplumber
09.02.14 | but alas times have changed and that ticket stub from grand funk at the metro center's startin to look like the got damn declaration...the kids hate rock n roll, really they hate all music except a song here and there. pretty wild if you ask me |

09.02.14 | might as well include the 1975's lol |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | Yeah, that's right. I'm not the one to talk though, 2 years ago I was one of those "casual listeners" who knew nothing about music and at least the latter point hasn't changed too much.
It just looks like a bit of a second 80s. I mean, the number of successful rock bands back then was...limited. And look at them, glam metal, americana and maybe Queen and punk bands as a relief. There's just no Mercury around these days. |
Linx
09.02.14 | I'm pushing for Linkin Park just based on the amount of records they sell |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | The interesting thing about LP is, now they're back to make good rock and suddenly they don't sell anything |
zakalwe
09.02.14 | The 'rock' scene at the moment is the best it's been since early 2000 with all that garage band revival stuff, kick started by The White Stripes but grew old after a week.
Seriously, The Wytches , Youth Man and Slaves are among the most exciting things I've heard in years.
Finally kids are getting angry again, plugging in and letting rip. |
SharkTooth
09.02.14 | @krazykris Because they've stopped trend-hopping, so the scene losers stopped buying. They are still a commercial force to be
reconed with tho |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | ~The Wytches , Youth Man and Slaves~
never ever heard those names
@SharkTooth
Yeah, but the thing is, there's obviously a correlation between the degree of rock in the music and commercial success. So, if they really sell again, that almost certainly means they are back in the electronic area. Obviously many people think "Burn It Down" is better than "Guilty All The Same" |
Snowdog808
09.02.14 | 1971 was the shit though, more so than 1975. |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | ~not to sound like your typical old man here but it was a great time to be alive. we listened to records start to finish and talkin about em with your pals was like askin someone about breaking bad now, totally normal.~
Forgot that before. That's right, but realistically speaking it's a matter of opportunities. 30 years ago, you bought a LP and listened to it, that was about it. Today is a product of the technological revolution. People being happy that we have iPod, iPad and iPud (it will come, we just don't know it yet) is ok, but the downside isn't exactly small and the music scene has suffered heavily. Thanks to iTunes we are back in the 50s again, where it was all about the singles and albums were only put together if there was already success
|
Trebor.
09.02.14 | most good music today is independent or underground so this discussion is pretty much irrelevant
music taste has become broader and broader in the age of information, so there aren't really people all listening to the same 5 bands like it used to be

I hate statements like that |
Trebor.
09.02.14 | well I mean it's true?
and that statement mostly goes along with the statement about tastes becoming broader and broader
Smash sold over ten million copies in 1994. An album like that is never going to happen again probably |
Trebor.
09.02.14 | and dude you have 2 ratings from this year, why are you even in this discussion? |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | Like "today" or "modern" refers to one year. And I have no problem with your opinion, I can't even say if I would agree or not since I have no substantial knowledge of underground music these days.
It's more the phrasing I hate. Although there are hundreds of acknowledged critics and the ratings on this site for the Beatles or on the other end brokeNCYDE carry some weight, there's no absolute truth to whether something's good or bad. |
Trebor.
09.02.14 | well you can substitute good for challenging, or groundbreaking, or avante-garde, or basically anything that isn't 3:30 to 4:30 minutes long, in a 4/4 time signature, in a major key, and has a chorus that comes in around the :30 second mark, is repeated three times, often with a bridge that's simply the chorus but with stripped down instrumentation or a key change and it's not going to be played on the radio or become mainstream dude
like if Zep came out today people would be like what the fuck is this shit |
KrazyKris
09.02.14 | Nice black and white thinking there. Sure, there are
limitations to what could be successful and that area
has gotten smaller over the last 30 years. But it's so
easy to see why and that you don't find anything avant-
garde in popular music nowadays isn't very surprising
either since there isn't so much to experiment or
innovate anymore after 6 decades of rock music. And
yeah, there definitely are examples that would prove me
wrong, but on a broader scale there's probably not too
much of that.
Challenging is a subjective term too. What is
challenging, is it about the lyrics, the themes, the song
structure and all in all it's about the question where you
draw the line. |
