| Dir En Grey Ranked | 8 | | DIR EN GREY Withering To Death
Trashy, unrefined, lacking the standard variation or imagination that they're used to
living up to in every way. Withering To Death is lacklustre and boring. Although The
Final is one of their most popular songs, it?s simple and doesn?t require much thought
to pull off. As for the rest, it?s a waste of time. | 7 | | DIR EN GREY The Marrow Of A Bone
Coarse production, terrible style of metal, too many tracks you just really want to
skip. Nevertheless, contains three of their best songs, including Conceived Sorrow
and The Pledge, which make it better than their previous venture. It?s an enigma. | 6 | | DIR EN GREY Macabre
A bit muddled, a decent transition album showing signs of maturation, but no real
classic tracks on here. | 5 | | DIR EN GREY Dum Spiro Spero
Abstract, quirky, some real great sounding instrumentation sections, and fresh song-
writing in most places. However, several tracks let it down that don't serve any
purpose on this album, and are simply unpleasant to listen to (Decayed Crow,
Katsuki). | 4 | | DIR EN GREY Kisou
The most experimental outgoing, very varied and consistently fresh. A softer album in
most places, it's got a great aura. However, lacks consistency from start to finish
that deny it the chance to be their best. Some tracks seem to be biding time, and the
rough edged production feels like its hiding a lack of attention to detail that we know
Dir En Grey are capable of. | 3 | | DIR EN GREY Vulgar
Catchy, well recorded, finessed, it's one of the best showcases of punk songwriting of
the naughties. Generally consistent, and with some real gems of tracks (Child Prey,
Kausumi). However, lacks variation, some of the lesser tracks can get stale after
several listens. | 2 | | DIR EN GREY Uroboros
Imaginative, refined, poised. The complexity and arrangement on some tracks (Ware
Yami Tote, Toguro) is staggering. A very impressive album on the whole.
Unfortunately, three of four songs that have no right to be on it (Red Soil, Reiketsu). | 1 | | DIR EN GREY GAUZE
Classic, consistent. Doesn't seem to age. None of the songs on Gauze strike as easily
skippable. Contains arguably the best song of their career (Mazohyst of Decadence)
and a handful of other very catchy and strong tracks. The record feels complete, and
each track feels at home on it, which is a feet Dir En Grey have come so close to
achieving subsequently, but never as well as on Gauze. | |
Trebor.

09.04.14 | I've only jammed 2 and 5 completely and and 2 is my favorite. Band is awesome. Dunno how you can say some of 2's songs have no right being on there. Red Soil in particular is fucking awesome. Cool list tho. | samsquanch
09.04.14 | 2,7,5>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> rest of them.
also red soil rules. | porcupinetheater
12.10.14 | 4 is 1 for me, whole album goes so well from start to finish, and it feels like it covered a hell of a lot of ground on the way there but somehow managed to end up in the same room at finish as start. The worst thing I can say about the band, though, is that at their worst, my mind can sometimes start to wander listening, but it never drops below that standard, and usually sits pretty comfortably high above. |
