09.10.14 | My absolute favorite bm records are the top 2, then the rest are just good and important that everyone should hear
Kataxu - Hunger of Elements
Ruins of Beverast - Rain Upon the Impure
Ulver - Bergtatt, Nattens Madrigal
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Vinterland - Welcome my Last Chapter
Emperor - First 2 albums
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
Darkthrone - First 4
Bathory - First 4
Nokturnal Mortum - Voice of Steel
Windir - everything, best fucking band
There's plenty of great lesser-known stuff, but all of that is well-regarded and important stuff, check out any of them that you haven't heard |
ComeToDaddy
09.10.14 | WitTR are good too for shoegaze stuff, and Moonsorrow are glorious if you want something from the cheesier end of black/folk/viking/cheese metal |
EnyaFangirl
09.10.14 | Cobalt - Gin |
Artuma
09.10.14 | any norwegian 2nd wave bm band - any release from the early 90s |

09.10.14 | I've listened to Deathspell a fair amount, just didn't put them in my list for some bizarre reason!
Thought I'd start at the top, so Kataxu it is. Sounding VERY good so far, though it sounds like the sort of
thing that requires a few listens, which is always a good thing.
Thanks everyone for suggestions, should keep me busy for a while! My objectivity rating is likely about to
take a serious knock. |
osmark86
09.10.14 | "borderline ridiculous"? I'd say the year something was released it absolutely irrelevant, but I see what you mean. I'd have to say:
Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory & Injury
Deathspell Omega - Paracletus [number]
Castevet - Obsian
Paysage d'Hiver - Das Tor
Autumn For Crippled Children - Only The Ocean Knows
Lantlôs - Agape
Blut Aus Nord - 777 series
There are plenty more obviously, but these are some that I personally love. |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | I meant that I've only really listened to stuff from one year, and almost completely disregarded anything outside of my Sputnik lifetime ;) |
DungeonBoy
09.10.14 | Have you listened to Om by Negura Bunget. It is phenomenal.
Others:
Alcest - Ecailles De Lune (pioneers of "shoegaze blackmetal") best album
Falls of Rauros - The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood (pagan woodsy blackmetal)
Gorgoroth - Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt (favorite of theirs check out the song "Prayer")
Gris - A lame Enflammee, lame Constellee (best black metal album of 2013)
Kauan - Pirut (Neofolk like Tenhi, but more black metal. Amazing songwriting)
Melechesh - Emissaries (Sumerian black metal)
Moonsorrow - V. Havitetty (pagan folk blackish metal. Their masterpiece)
Naglfar - Vittra (Swedish melodic black metal from the 90's)
Sigh - Hangman's Hymn (Thrashy symphonic Japanese black metal album)
Woods of Desolation - Torn Beyond Reason
|
Gameofmetal
09.10.14 | You're missing Saor's newest album Aura and Caladan Brood's Echoes of Battle (better than summoning imo) for modern stuff but these other guys got you for old school bm. |
Wolfhorde
09.10.14 | When I saw the title for a second I thought this was a joke but fortunately you realized the almost hilarious insanity of that description.
Aaskereia - Dort, wo das alte Böse ruht
Aaskereia - Mit Raben und Wölfen
Vinterland - Welcome my last Chapter [2]
Nachtfalke - Hail Victory Teutonia
Luror - The Iron Hand of Blackest Terror
Nagelfar - Virus West
Nagelfar - Hünengrab im Herbst
Kermania - Ahnenwerk
The Ruins of Beverast - Rain Upon the Impure
Drudkh - Microcosmos
Agalloch - Pale Folklore
WiTTR - Two Hunters and Diadem
Walknut - Graveforests and their Shadows
Fen - The Malediction Fields
Dornenreich - Nicht um Zu Sterben and Bitter ist's dem Tod zu dienen
Wyrd - Huldrafolk
Belenos - Spicilege
Aes Dana - Formors
Negura Bunget - Om
Merrimack - Of Entropy And Life Denial
Gehenna - Spell albums and Adimiron Black
Setherial - Nord..
In general, some more Wod-VÃ n stuff, all of the LLN shenanigans - the obvious Scandinavian contenders.

Wolfhorde
09.10.14 | I also second Melechesh. |
ConorIsNotHere
09.10.14 | Thy Catafalque - Tuno Ido Tarlat |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | I have indeed listened to Om, and yes, it is a phenomenal piece of music. Your description of Falls of Rauros, by the way, made me want to listen to that as soon as possible.
Only listened to Aura for the first time since it's release yesterday, and I really enjoyed it this time round. Think it'll get a few more plays now.
Haha, I can understand why you thought it was a joke, and it was a bit :P But the idea behind it was there, and it seems to have worked given the size of the list being accumulated! |

09.10.14 | Silencer |
SCREAM!
09.10.14 | If you're going to get acquainted with this genre it is essential you go to its roots (ie: 2nd wave Norwegian BM)
Ulver - Bergtatt + Nattens
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger, Blaze, Under a Funeral Moon
Burzum - Everything Filosofem and earlier
Mayhem - De Mysteriis
Emperor - Anthems + Eclipse
Dissection - Somberlain + Storm (Swedish but same time period and classic status) |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | Haha, I know Silencer and Nattramn's disturbing-as-fuck vocals! Good stuff though, if I'm in the mood for it.
Just seen Fen's 'The Malediction Fields' listed. Reminds me of a mistake I made a few years ago, when I listened to it on t'internet, forgot the title, and then ordered a sort of progressive rock Fen that was pretty poor instead. Bad times. |
SCREAM!
09.10.14 | Oh anod how could I forget
Satyricon - Medieval + Nemesis
Immortal - Basically anything
Taake |
Keyblade
09.10.14 | Malediction Fields was prolly the first bm album I really liked. Also dl'd it on a whim cuz of a review I read around the time it came out. Really good intro to the genre imo, even if it is flawed |
Wolfhorde
09.10.14 | Odd intro to BM. But then again, I guess not everyone can be introduced to the genre by veterans. |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | First one I remember liking was Behemoth's 'Demigod', but then I didn't touch the genre from then - instead, got lost in a mix of Slipknot, SOAD and Papa Roach. Those were the days.
Since then. the first one must have been The Mantle, with Malediction Fields leading to that. The difference being that I remembered the name of The Mantle :/ |
Keyblade
09.10.14 | Idk maybe it was the keys, or the exaggerated atmosphere that hooked me and eased me into the genre. Two Hunters is another one, mostly because of Cleansing which remains one of my favorite bm songs to this day |
DikkoZinner
09.10.14 | Immortal - Pure Holocaust |
Rail
09.10.14 | http://bandcamp.fallenempirerecords.com/
There's lots of good stuff here for free download. Check out Xothist and Tukaaria, in particular.
Jute Gyte is another excellent project that's also free.

Archelirion
09.10.14 | I'm familiar with Jute Gyte. Microtonal black metal, right? Bloody terrifying stuff. |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | I make that 171 albums (not all are BM, but about 120 or so are) and 4 labels to check out.

no weakling
wtf
yo listen to weakling's dead as dreams, if you really dig 6 you'll love it |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | To be honest, I could have put down most of Shining's discography, so I shall definitely give that one a try. |
Artuma
09.10.14 | i wouldn't say dead as dreams is a good starting point. it's an amazing album anyway |
Hyperion1001
09.10.14 | if he can handle shining then weakling should be no problem at all
its not really that difficult |
SCREAM!
09.10.14 | Guys CLASSICS FIRST UGH |

09.10.14 | Oh yeah
Dodecahedron - s/t
Pretty sweet stuff reminiscent of DsO |
Wolfhorde
09.10.14 | "Guys CLASSICS FIRST UGH"
Calm down. We don't need to regurtitate recs that have already been mentioned 300 times and that every toddler with an internet connection could find. |
Rail
09.10.14 | Speaking of classics or classics-to-be, you need to pick up Negative Plane's Stained Glass Revelations. For me, it's up there with Dead as Dreams as the best of USBM. |
Gestapo
09.10.14 | lifelover
|
Archelirion
09.10.14 | I've heard of Lifelover, do they come under dsbm or something?
Might take me a while Rail, but I'll get there ;) |
Wolfhorde
09.10.14 | There's too much BM in general tbh. I may just do a series of BM lists soon. List per country/area or something. |
Gestapo
09.10.14 | ye lifelover is dsbm ull dig since u like shining |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | Of the 'classics' I've got through thus far, I'm not sold on Bathory, but Emperor goes hard as balls. And balls are pretty hard. |
Gestapo
09.10.14 | ur not gonna digest this much bm so quickly a lot of it u might have to come back to appreciate since ur so new to the genre |
DikkoZinner
09.10.14 | Blood of Kingu - Sun in the House of the Scorpion |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | Yeah, I expect that'll be the case. I'm not a complete newbie to the genre, but certainly haven't listened to enough to even pretend I'm an expert on it, particularly with 90's BM. I have no issues with the abrasiveness or anything, it was mainly the production values on the Bathory album that got me (but I expect that's because I'm a privileged 'new-age' BM listener with production bestowed by the gods... or something.) |
Wolfhorde
09.10.14 | Yeah, definitely give some albums some time. They might not click right away. Sometimes listening to something at a later date or under better external circumstnaces makes for a different listening experience. |
Avagantamos
09.10.14 | windir |
EnyaFangirl
09.10.14 | Oh, how could I forget: Sacramentum - Far Away From the Sun. Def my favorite BM album |

He said he has no clue where to start, well that is the logical place to start. Herp derp. |
Archelirion
09.10.14 | I'm pretty happy with the mix, actually. Gives me a good selection from different eras and different regions to choose from, although I agree that the beginning is a good place to start.
Speaking of which, is Venom worth a listen? |
emester
09.10.14 | for great dsbm, Shining and Gris are bands to check.
For probably the greatest Black metal Record in the last several years, check Deathspell Omega's Paracletus (even though everyone probably already recd it to you) |
SCREAM!
09.10.14 | @Aaron They're worth it just to see how the genre really got kicked off (and because they do have some pretty killer songs) but they're essentially a heavy metal/thrash band and sound nothing like what we know as BM today.
That's also why I didn't rec any 1st wave bands like Von, Blasphemy, etc because they essentially sound like DM with bad production (great bands nonetheless though). |
JustinKing
09.10.14 | Griefloss - Ruiner (Yeah, it's from 2014, but it's been pretty under the radar. Really nice Shoegaze/BM mix)
Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta I: Fathers of the Icy Age
Dodecahdron [2]
Celestia - Frigidiis Apotheosia
Cobalt - Gin
Drakhian - High Zephyr Point
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
Forgotten Tomb - Springtime Depression
Limbonic Art - In Abhorrence Dementia
Morowe - S
Burzum - Hvis Lysset Tar Oss
Watain - Lawless Darkness
Woe - A Spell for the Death of Man
Solefald - The Linear Scaffold
Entropia (PL) - Vesper
Ajuna - Prisoners of the Sun
Alda - :Tahoma:
Dopamine - Dying Away in the Deep Fall
Lantlos - .neon
An Autumn for Crippled Children - Only the Ocean Knows
Princ Persii - Princ Persii
