Devin Townsend Ranked

Updated for 2014
14Devin Townsend
The Hummer

The bottom of the barrel of Devy's output from what i've heard of it.
13Devin Townsend
Physicist

I put this album in the tail end of Devy's work as I find I can't connect with any
songs save for Kingdom and Planet Rain. The atmosphere is too sterile and cold and
there's no X factor about it..
12Devin Townsend
Ziltoid the Omniscient

If Casualties of Cool is on the low end of the weird spectrum, Ziltoid is at the very
top. I can appreciate Devin's wonderful sense of humour but the music doesn't
relate to me on a personal level. Maybe once Z2 hits I might take the time to listen
to this one again. Hyperdrive and By Your Command are my favs from this one.
11Devin Townsend Project
Deconstruction

Even with the amazing ensemble list of musicians, I came away ultimately
dissapointed by this album. I feel if this album was released as a completely
separate entity from the DTP moniker it may have worked better. This was also a
super productive time for Devy, and the quality control was probably not at his
usual level.
10Devin Townsend
Infinity

To put it simply, hearing Kingdom on Epicloud after hearing the original version
shows how much more focused Devy became on his sound by adding Anneke.
There's some great tracks here but i'd place it bottom half of his output.
9Devin Townsend Project
Ki

Before Anneke there was Che Aimee, who's smoky voice really fit this album well.
There's a real sparse barren feel to the music though and I think I find it too hard
to get in the mood for. The songwriting is outstanding as per usual.
8Devin Townsend Project
Epicloud

Epicloud is the real tricky one in Devy's catalogue for me. I understand that it's
overblown and pompous for a reason but for me it does feel a bit of a chore to
listen to all the way through. But it also has some ripper tracks like Kingdom and
Grace and I think Anneke shines on here as much as Addicted.
7The Devin Townsend Band
Synchestra

Back in the summer of 2006 when Devy dropped this, I remember listening to it
non-stop for weeks. The summery vibe to it also made it so much better. And for a
change, the first three tracks of a Devy album owned face. The transition of
Let it Roll and Hypergeek merging into Triumph was amazing. Although I don't listen to
it nearly as much, it's still great value. Just doesn't have that X-factor song like
Deadhead on it.
6Devin Townsend Project
Ghost

#5 and #6 are pretty much interchangable, I love them equally depending on what
mood i'm in. The replayability factor has lessened a little over time but "Feather"
and "Ghost" are still among his best compositions ever.
5Casualties of Cool
Casualties of Cool

The strength of this album lies in the beauty of it's restraint and the ability to sell the
experience as a whole. That moment upon first hearing "Daddy" how the music
instantly reflects the images Devy has created, right down to the album cover. Lone traveller in space
indeed.
4Devin Townsend Project
Addicted

Would be sitting higher if not for the first 3 tracks which are skippable. From
Supercrush on though, this album is the most fun you can have listening to Devy.
The real clincher though is having Anneke on vocals.
3Devin Townsend
Terria

Despite placing Terria at #3, this album remains his most challenging album to get
into. On one hand I love the straight up songs like Stagnant, Nobody's Here and
Earth Day and On the other hand there are parts of the album that lose me and I
find it hard to pinpoint where it's going. Also the unification of the concept (Terria)
with the music and cover art doesn't feel as consistent as the Ocean in Biomech
which is why IMO Biomech will always be his pinnacle.
2The Devin Townsend Band
Accelerated Evolution

This album has stolen the #2 spot from Terria after listening through all his work again. I find that this
album has a genuine emotion unlike Terria which comes across a bit pretentious.
Plus Deadhead is only matched by Death of Music as Devy's best song. Throw in
Storm, Away and Slow Me Down and Depth Charge and you've got a winner.
1Devin Townsend
Ocean Machine: Biomech

Still the pinnacle. The ending suite of Funeral, Bastard, Death of Music (plus Things
Beyond Things) is the epitome of what makes him the genius he is.
