Grooviest Meshuggah Grooves

a list dedicated to wolfe, MO and other followers of the shug
20meshuggah
obzen

dancers to a discordant system (7:58) - the swarm of bees make another appearance,
nice long groove serves as a perfect closer to the album.
19meshuggah
nothing

nebulous (intro) - one of their slowest and most crushing
18meshuggah
destroy erase improve

suffer in truth (2:00) - SUFFER IN TRUUUUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATH
17meshuggah
obzen

lethargica (3:01) - an apocalyptic groove that leaves no survivors. this one is enhanced
because it comes in out of nowhere after a creepy little quiet section
16meshuggah
nothing (re-release)

perpetual black second (intro) - this one is cool because its fairly fast-paced compared to
the other songs on this album. great example of how no one can make 3 notes sound as
awesome as shug
15meshuggah
chaosphere

new millenium cyanide christ (intro / 4:21) - had to include this somewhere on the list.
probably the most well-known shuggah song besides bleed, and for good reason. this
one basically served as a precursor for the sound that they would truly flesh out on their
next album. final groove is really simple by meshuggah standards but is super catchy.
bonus points for having the best music video of all time:

14meshuggah
koloss

break those bones whose sinews gave it motion (0:27) - ridiculously heavy and
relatively drawn-out groove played over a simple guitar lead, definitely one of the best
on koloss

inside whats within behind (intro) - straight 8th notes geniusly combined with a simple
beat from haake makes for one of the most straighfoward yet simultaneously interesting
grooves on DEI
12meshuggah
none

sickening (0:30) - nice throwback here. super heavy mid-paced groove that forms the
basis of the whole song
11meshuggah
obzen

obzen (intro) - one of their most "percussive" grooves, the first part of this section is
completely devoid of anything other than one note following the bass drum. also the
polyrhythm is really cool once you figure it out
10meshuggah
nothing

closed eye visuals (0:30) - even within their discography there's nothing quite like this
album, one of the heaviest and grooviest of all time. this song is no exception, the verse
riff and the slight variations that follow are nothing short of genius

future breed machine (0:28 / 3:40) - NYIT NYIT NYIT NYIT NYIT NYIT NYIT NYIT
scientific evidence that they are not human
8meshuggah
chaosphere

corridor of chameleons (2:43) - this one is relatively straightforward rhythmically but
still hits hard as fuck, the dissonant chords in between the low notes add a nice contrast.
7meshuggah
koloss

do not look down (2:58) - one of their more melodic and "catchy" sections, as well as
one of their more accessible songs. pretty interesting how they switch up the higher
notes as the groove moves along. might as well include the DO NOT...LOOK...DOWN
section after it too.
6meshuggah
catch thirtythree

in death is life (intro) : classic meshuggah groove consisting of only like 3 notes but still
being absolutely fucking genius. one of their more straightforward sections. fairly similar
to rational gaze. the placement of mind's mirrors right before it makes it hit extra
fucking hard when it drops. the swarm of bees continues in the background
5meshuggah
nothing

straws pulled at random (0:28) - fucking beast of a groove, haake switches the snare
hits up a bit to keep things interesting, again if you dont headbang to this i dont know
who the fuck you are
4meshuggah
catch thirtythree

in death is death (2:16 / 2:54) - some of the more melodic and also creative grooves
meshuggah wrote. honestly any part from this monster would be acceptable but these
are the 2 that stand out the most for me
3meshuggah
nothing (re-release)

rational gaze (intro) - also known as the wolf of wall street groove. another obvious but
essential pick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-y1N29vH2Y for those who havent
seen it
2meshuggah
catch thirtythree

dehumanization (2:09) - one of the heaviest and grooviest fucking riffs ever put to tape.
the buildup right before it makes it even more earth shattering, god damn
1meshuggah
obzen

bleed (intro + whole entire song) - an obvious but essential choice. the intro groove is
iconic and if youre not headbanging within .1 second you probably dont have a soul, or
are just a bitch. song keeps things interesting by masterfully switching the rhythms up
subtley as the song moves forward, while sticking to the same concept without getting
even remotely boring
