Album Rating: 4/5 | 10 | | Janelle Monae The ArchAndroid
I think I love The ArchAndroid because it's an album that inspires me to want to get
up and dance. Well, at least the first half or does. Not only that, but Janelle's voice is
utterly incredible. She sings with ease on the more standard pop tracks, and she's
capable of belting it out on some of the album's other songs. Along the way, she
manages to mix several different genres together and make a coherent and complete
album of it; certainly one of the greatest musical accomplishments of the past few
years, and "Oh, Maker" never fails to make my heart melt. Album Rating: 4/5 | 9 | | Deerhunter Halcyon Digest
Halcyon Digest wasn't an album I was expecting to love, because outside of this I'm
not the biggest fan, though their other work does continue to grow on me the more I
listen to it. However, I think what I love about this particular record is how it reminds
of my childhood. I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise when looking at the title, but
even so, the past exists in this album, and that's no easy accomplishment. Album
Rating: 4/5 | 8 | | Real Estate Days
I can't say that I listen to Days much anymore, but when I do listen, it
instantaneously makes me feel incredibly happy. There's a great sense of warmth
that this album gives me, and I'm not too sure as to why, because often the lyrics
don't reflect this. Perhaps it's the memorable guitar riffs that do it for me, but
whatever the reason, I know I can turn to Days when I've had a crappy day. Album
Rating: 4/5 | 7 | | Cults Cults
I've loved Cults since I first heard their music. Yes, it's simple, catchy pop music, but
it's undeniably addicting. Songs of love and heartbreak never sounded so good, and
seeing them live only added to my love for the band and their debut. They'll probably
never make another album as good, or even as remotely catchy, but for this one
album I can honestly say they stole my heart, and I'm forever thankful. Album
Rating: 4.5/5 | 6 | | Sufjan Stevens The Age of Adz
At first, Sufjan Stevens disappointed me a little bit on my initial listen of The Age of
Adz. I wanted another Illinois, another song as perfect as "Chicago." That wasn't to
be, and I can now say that it's all for the best. Stevens completely reinvented himself
here, and the results are fantastic. It's true that it took more listens than I care to
admit, and it wasn't until recently when I became obsessed with the album that I
came to this realization. Perhaps the album runs a little too long for its own good, but
I'm still waiting for another song to be as life-affirming as "Impossible Soul." Album
Rating: 4.5/5 | 5 | | Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Before My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, I can't say I liked Kanye much at all. Sure,
I enjoyed The College Dropout, but that was about it. I couldn't get into any of his
other work. When he released this, though, it became an instant favorite. It's catchy,
fun, and I never tire of listening to it. Yes, it's my favorite hip-hop album. That should
not only show how white I am, but also how little I listen to the genre. There's no
shame, however, because I genuinely love this album, and even when people seem
shocked when I say that I like Kanye West despite his massive ego, I simply point to
this album. Album Rating: 4.5/5 | 4 | | The Menzingers On the Impossible Past
I'll be honest, outside of On the Impossible Past I'm not much of a fan of the
Menzingers. An incredibly talented band, yes, but it wasn't until this album when I
connected to their music. I'm a sucker for any album that has the least bit of
nostalghia, and On the Impossible Past has that in spades. When I listen to this
album, there's a yearning for the past that I can't but help feel. Although the album
might not be perfect, it comes damn close. And I wish every song had a moment as
brilliant as, "Remember the days when I had a conscience" (pause) "Yeah me
neither." Reflecting on the past never felt so good. Album Rating: 4.5/5 | 3 | | Fiona Apple The Idler Wheel...
I've always liked Fiona Apple, ever since I heard "Criminal" on the radio I've been a
fan; however, outside of her sophomore release, I couldn't stomach a full album. I
really don't know why, but thanks to The Idler Wheel... I've now fallen absolutely
head over heals for Fiona Apple. I'd argue that Apple has never been open and
honest, and it makes songs such as "Valentine" all the more relatable. She's telling
stories that practically everyone has gone through if they've ever been in love. It's
sure not an easy listen, but it's essential and far and away Apple's best work to date.
Album Rating: 4.5/5 | 2 | | Neko Case The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight...
Neko Case's latest effort may very well be her best yet, and that's saying something if
you listen to previous efforts. On The Worse Things Get..., she's certainly never been
more personal, and I think that's a huge advantage this album has over, say,
Blacklisted. Not only is it her most personal, but I'd argue that it's her most
accomplished, too, when just looking from how different each song is from one
another. She boasts her soaring vocals on "Man" and then manages to make her
voice incredibly poignant on "Calling Cards"; it's absolutely beautiful, and this is
certainly fighting for the top spot. Album Rating: 5/5 | 1 | | Titus Andronicus The Monitor
Even though The Monitor seldom appears on my playlist anymore, it's still my favorite
album, not only of the past few years but of all-time, too. When I put this record on,
a sense of freedom seems to come alive, and I forget about everything else. Not
many songs, let alone an entire album, are able to accomplish that for me, and I
think that's why The Monitor claims the top spot. Despite whatever's going on in my
life, I know I'll always have a connection with this album. It honestly wouldn't
surprise me if by the end of the decade The Monitor still manages to be on top. Album
