Top 15 Of 2014 |
15 | | Joyce Manor Never Hungover Again
Never Stagedive Again
On the plus side, I did get to legitimately use the insult "patriotic straight-edge piece of shit" and I'm beyond excited about that. |
14 | | Cloud Nothings Here and Nowhere Else
Growing up in the same town as the frontman, Dylan, I basically have to be into this. Not quite as good overall as Attack on
Memory for me, but there's definitely the stand-out tracks ("I'm Not Part of Me"). |
13 | | Modern Baseball You're Gonna Miss it All
Basically improved on every aspect of Sports but lost some more of the emo feel they had and became a bit more pop punk-
friendly. Still a fun and catchy album, though. |
12 | | Sorority Noise Forgettable
These songs are really catchy. I'm not going to make an "unforgettable" pun. |
11 | | Two Knights Shut Up
Still fun chaotic post-hardcore. It feels like it should have been released 10 years ago, and that's actually a really cool aspect. I
dunno. |
10 | | Every Time I Die From Parts Unknown
I don't think ETID have ever released anything truly bad. This is a little bit more spectacular than Ex-Lives, but hasn't quite hit Hot
Damn! for me yet. |
9 | | Death Grips The Powers That B - Part I: Niggas on the Moon
JENNY DEATH WHEN |
8 | | Tigers Jaw Charmer
Fun, but still relaxing indie emo punk stuff. Lacking in the energy that made their s/t so good, but this just has a really great
feeling of nostalgia in it to me. "Hum" is one of my favorite tracks this year. |
7 | | Run the Jewels Run the Jewels 2
My favorite hip hop album of the year, mostly just because Jenny Death hasn't come out yet. I know everyone loves this album, so
I'll spare the usual stuff. But I grew up listening to Rage Against the Machine, so the de la feature was incredible for me. |
6 | | Single Mothers Negative Qualities
There's some sort of disgusting familiarity with this album. Every time I listen to this album, it impacts me strangely. I'm not sure
why, but I like it. |
5 | | The Hotelier Home, Like NoPlace Is There
Really catchy poppy punk. Definitely took a while to grow on me, but it was well worth it. Still love "Life in Drag" every time it
comes on. |
4 | | Swans To Be Kind
I'm a huge fan of Swans. Ever since Gira reunited the band, they've been getting consistently better. To Be Kind is by far the best
of the new Swans era, though I don't think they'll ever touch the early no wave albums or Soundtracks for the Blind. One can
always hope, though. |
3 | | Full Of Hell and Merzbow Full Of Hell & Merzbow
I loved Rudiments of Mutilation and I'm a big fan of Merzbow (mostly his analog stuff, but the modern digital era is still great).
Needless to say, I was waiting in anticipation for this to drop. Full of Hell's disc is dark, evil, and deviously grindy. Merzbow's disc
is also incredible and is probably my favorite modern work of his. Great stuff. |
2 | | Code Orange I Am King
Brutally heavy caveman moshcore. I loved their first full-length and its spastic/chaotic metalcore feel, and when I heard they
would go in a more 90's metalcore direction, I was really fucking excited. I can listen to this over and over. |
1 | | Frameworks Loom
Every thing these guys release is better than the last, and Loom continues with the trend. Everything is so easy to relate to, and I
love the whole post-screamo aspect these guys have going on. AOTY. |
