| Best Black Metal Albums
This is a list of my favorite black metal albums, or at least of black metal albums rthat are popular (by black metal standards). This is mostly an introduction to black rmetal. | 10 | | Venom Welcome to Hell
This isn't really a black metal album, but it's importance to black metal (also to thrash and
death) is inconceivable. Sure, Black Sabbath caused some commotion back in the day, but
basically every modern day metal stereotype can be traced back to this album. On top of that,
this album proveded the reckless abandon that black metal is known for. This album is a bit
(ok, very) cheesy and is pretty light by todays standards, but it is still worth a listen. Be
warned, it's production is bad, even by black metal standards. | 9 | | Agalloch The Mantle
This is easily the lightest album on here. It is not an album for really getting used to black
metal music. However, it does have black metal vocals, so it can help there. I would love to
go into more detail, but this is just an album that's hard to describe. Just listen to it, as it also
happens to be amazing. | 8 | | Immortal Pure Holocaust
Don't you just love that friendly album title? That aside, this is actually a somewhat light
album, featuring lots of ambiance in addition to blast beats. It's also pretty technical, so if you
care about that, this is an album for you. | 7 | | Celtic Frost Morbid Tales
This rides the line between black and thrash, but its quality and importance places it here.
This is a great album to get thrashers into black metal, although it lies on the heavier side of
thrash so it won't really help you if you're coming from Metallica. | 6 | | Bathory Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Influence meets quality. Bathory isn't one of my favorite bands, but this album is truly great.
It is one of the first black metal recordings to actually sound, you know, good. This helped
them greatly as their first two albums' production had all the precision of a nuclear warhead.
It also arguably sounds HEAVIER due to its good production, as it shows off how truly
inaccessible this music is. | 5 | | Mayhem De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
If you had to pick a band that started black metal, Mayhem is probably a good answer. This is
their true defining moment as a band, and it's importance is considerable. But, really, it
doesn't hold up all that well today. It's still good though and very important. | 4 | | Darkthrone A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Darkthrone were one of first true black metal bands. This is their masterpiece. This is the
template for black metal. In addition to that, it's just good! | 3 | | Burzum Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Lots can be said about Mr. Vikernes (if you don't know what I'm talking about, just look it up)
and one of those things is innovator. This is a very early black metal album from Norway, and
it shows. The Norwegian sound is one of chaos and this album displays that perfectly. Don't
expect much beauty here, this is the musical equivalent of WW2. | 2 | | Dissection Storm of the Light's Bane
Unlike many black metal albums, this is a very precise album. It feels very musically "held
together". The songs really attempt (and succeed) at more than just being unquestionably
brutal. But, don't let that fool you, the songs here still are very much black metal songs,
regardless of their structure. | 1 | | Emperor In the Nightside Eclipse
This is easily my favorite black metal album. It manages to be melodic without sacrificing
anything in the heaviness department. It's brutal but beautiful. | |
