YetAnotherBrick: I Wrote An Essay About The Current Public Perception Of Art

NorthernSkylark 01.10.15	cool piece. it reminds me of a time i went with my father to look at some weird installation in a cont art museum. so i stood and tried to figure out what the hell it was supposed to mean, but i got lost in the textures instead and enjoyed where it took me. so my father comes over to me and says (like i'm an expert on art cause i've been to a museum before): what do you think it represents? i say i don't know. he adds: the decay of society, maybe? tentatively, like it's a half-crazy idea. he walks away again, because he figures he prob nailed it. but for me it kinda ruined the whole thing, that it meant only that one thing. it was a beautiful creation of sorts, but now it was labeled as a one thing only type of art - it got connected with its message only. isn't there more to art than that? i think so sorry for rambling. i liked your piece very much :]

KrazyKris 01.10.15	I'd say you're right and wrong. Art is a wonderful thing for many and in all its diversity and timelessness it unfolds so many different layers that it isn't just virtually impossible to fully get a hang of it, but literally. And since we all spend much time on sputnik, it isn't too much of a stretch to think we all embrace at least music in a "deeper" way (what a pretentious thing to say) than most other people do. But the point you're making sounds to me like it is some sort of crime to not be mesmerized by what art has to offer, to not seek for as many different impressions from it than possible. But apart from the fact that I personally don't see the depth in let's say Warhol or Kandinsky pieces, not even looking for it doesn't mean anything. If I don't care for the thrill people get out of chanting at some gorillas running around with a football it doesn't mean anything either. No one could make the point that the satisfaction or amazement you get from the different forms of art is more thoughtful, more meaningful, just deeper. But as much as I want to agree about that, trying to embrace art is just as little an imperative as caring for sports is. Also, I tend to be in the group that wants "meaning" in art. It doesn't have to be that much of a message, actually everything but that. But for me especially painting kind of have to transport an emotion and I kind of not see that in some modern art forms. On the other hand, the cold brilliance of something like the Sistine Chapel ceiling is stunning too. Would probably take too long to really get to the bottom of this.

RVAHC13 01.10.15	A fine piece of writing! My take on art is that it's entirely perspectival, meaning anything can be seen as art by any particular person. Some appreciate minimalism in art while others look for extravagance. Just because many find Jackson Pollock paintings to be art doesn't necessarily mean you're going to. Sure many people nowadays appreciate "mainstream" art instead of maybe more abstract pieces, but it's always been like this and it always will. Just like people appreciate their own style of art, they also interpret in their own way too. Some people aren't going to be so expressively enthusiastic about art, but that doesn't mean they don't see it for what it is. It's the same with music in that people enjoy their own styles, they don't have to like it because someone else does.

YetAnotherBrick 01.11.15	thanks for the comments, everyone. and yeah Kris, a few people on facebook have been showing me similar points... maybe i should be a little more sympathetic. but writing this thing was kind of just me spilling out my honest thoughts. there's not a whole lot i would really alter, besides the occasional name-calling, if you could really call it that. i just wanted to try to show people who've given up on understanding the "deeper," more abstract forms of art what they're missing.
