2014: A Summery
No, this isn't a ranking (too lazy lel) but rather a summery of (almost) reverything I've rlistened to in 2014. |
1 | | Kid Teeth Get A Grip
Short emo ep I found on bandcamp for free, some tracks are pretty "meh" but for
the most part it's actually pretty fun to listen to. You can definatly tell that these
guys had some fun recording it, especially with the song "Kissing Others" (3.5/5) |
2 | | How Scandinavian The Educator
This is a super awesome indie band, they sound like if old-school weezer listened
to a bunch of early Unwound. (4.2/5) |
3 | | 68 In Humor and Sadness
Don't worry guys, I still remember this (even if I havn't jammed it in the full in a
while, oops). Really interesting combination of blues and noise rock, plus the
bookends are definate highlights of the year (3.7/5) |
4 | | Shellac Dude Incredible
Production is superb as always, the songs are fucking fun as hell to listen to, and
there's many quotable moments ("perhaps they'll let us fuck them" comes to
mind) some duds here and there, but overall solid album (4.0/5) |
5 | | Bones Skinny
Bones' tapes are, for the most part, pretty hit or miss, however Skinny was a bit
more "hit" than usual. (3.5/5) |
6 | | U2 Songs of Innocence
U2 is a band that I never really cared about, and this album didn't really change
that. However, I will admit "Volcano" is pretty sweet. (3.1/5) |
7 | | The Vines Wicked Nature
I was expecting this to be just like their last three albums: Boring and bland,
however this wasn't the case... for the most part. The first disc is very excellent,
almost up to par as Highly Evolved, however the second disc simply sounds like a
collection of B-Sides. (3.7/5) |
8 | | The Austerity Program Beyond Calculation
These guys rule! Combining the scratchy guitar tones of Shellac and the cold,
industrialized drum machine sound of Big Black, Beyond Calculation is a fucking
monster of an album (3.8/5, PS Check out the 'Terra Nova' EP) |
9 | | Primus Primus and The Chocolate Factory...
Besides a few really fun tracks here and there, theres a lack of energy on this
album (3.2/5) |
10 | | Weezer Everything Will Be Alright In The End
God, remember the hype for this album? Anyways, Weezer stops trying to be "hip"
for the kids and start writing songs that relates to people there age: The concept
of breaking up, forgiving family members, and loneliness, and they do it in a fun
manner. (4.2/5) |
11 | | Apparitionist Godspeed
Noice jorb BMD, you made an EP both fun and weird at the same time (4.0/5) |
12 | | Absinthe Syncope Lucid Dreaming On 4g's of Dilaudid
Weird, interesting, spoopy (3.8/5) |
13 | | Aphex Twin Syro
Fun, quirky electronic album with bleeps and bloops for the soul, some "meh"
tracks (4.2/5) |
14 | | Andrew Jackson Jihad Christmas Island
I'm actually surprised by some of the negative feedback this album caught, the
personality is still there, there's still those weird, goofy tracks scattered through
out the album, and the instrumentation hasn't declined one bit. Then again, unlike
previous releases, the only really heart-wrenching, personal track here is "Linda
Ronstadt", but even then it's still a pretty good album (3.7/5) |
15 | | 311 Sterolithic
There's just too many tracks here, most of these songs are pretty forgettable,
however, when a song is done right, it's done right! Bouncy grooves like
"Showdown" is the biggest reason to even check this out (3.6/5) |
16 | | Chevelle La Gargola
Chevelle impressed me here, not only is it fun to listen to, but the atmosphere
showcased on tracks like "One Ocean" and "Twinge" is just amazing. (4.3/5) |
17 | | Sugary Sweet Machines Tours of the Bleak
Bleak atmospheres and industrial-influenced instrumentation? Sign me up! (4.3/5) |
18 | | Neil Ciciregra Mouth Silence
Neil Ciciregra is a very cool dude, and a funny one at that. His Mouth Silence
album is a mashup album composed of some of the weirdest combinations of
songs I've ever heard, making it all the more hilarious. Some tracks arn't as funny
as others, but overall its a great listen (4.0/5) |
19 | | Swans To Be Kind
This was pretty predictable, sure, but I will fight you if you disagreed with me and
said that this was not one of the funnest albums of 2014. Gira's shouts and
screams have so much energy to it, the instrumentation is weird and, to an extent,
goofy. The guitar tone is absolutely perfect, and the songs are straight up epic.
(4.6/5) |
20 | | Against Me! Transgender Dysphoria Blues
This is, for me, the album of the year. Not because the music is amazing or
anything, but because of the message. Transphobia is still a major issue in today's
world, typically brushed off as some weird joke. If it's possible to have laws
preventing those who identify themselves as the sex opposite to what they were
born as to get certain jobs, then it's possible for this album to be album of 2014. |
