Metamodern Sounds In Country Music

Sounds like Waylon on a little bit of acid, but improved songwriting.

Arlo McKinley & The Lonesome Sound Arlo McKinley & The Lonesome Sound

Not overly country in instrumentation, but it does mold itself nicely into the genre by its
strong songwriting. Sad songs abound on this one.
3John Fullbright
Songs

Some of the best songwriting of any album I listened to in 2014. The topics are rangy, but
"High Road" is an instant classic for me.
4Joseph Huber
The Hanging Road

.357 String Band's old banjo player released his third full-length, and dare I say, it's the best.
Many good country and folk tunes with a variety of tempos. Fair warning though, this is quite
unlike his work with his previous band.
5Don Williams
Reflections

A veteran of the game who creates wholesome country. His best album in years. Williams'
rendition of "Send Me Back Home" is well worth a listen.
6Cody Johnson
Cowboy Like Me

Neo-traditional country, though significantly more polished than other efforts.
7Johnny Cash
Out Among the Stars

Very good posthumous release.
8Justin Payne
No Place Lower Than High

Lots of good traditional tunes on this one.
9Ags Connolly
How About Now

Throwback country from a Brit.
10Robert Ellis
The Lights from the Chemical Plant

Folk album with many quality tracks.
