| Mark's Q1 2015 List
Here are some albums that I've really enjoyed in 2015 thus far, in no particular order. | 1 | | Lucian the Wolfbearer Paradise
(Funeral doom) A nice concoction of funeral doom and ambient; the ambient parts are gorgeous. Even if you're not into funeral doom, you'd do well to check out the two "Paradise" tracks. | 2 | | Death Grips Fashion Week (Instrumentals)
(Hip-hop, experimental) I enjoyed this one more than most; while it's a little longer than it needs to be, the instrumentals stand on their own very well. | 3 | | T'Saatsuna/Reverend Desaad Churnmilk Peg!!/Hypatian Codex: Compendium Dub
(Experimental, house, downtempo) Experimental house with tribal beats; has a very hip-hop inspired take on things, which appeals to me. This is one of the more inventive releases I've heard this year. | 4 | | Dead in the Manger Cessation
(Black metal) One of my favorites of the year. It boasts varied and inventive songwriting, and the replay value has been great. | 5 | | Ethereal Shroud They Became the Falling Ash
(Black metal, funeral doom) Dense and foreboding, the atmosphere is impenetrable on this one. The songwriting is powerful and moving. | 6 | | Heiress Of Great Sorrow
(Post metal, hardcore) Always the overlooked band, Of Great Sorrow is vast and expansive. John Pettibone (ex-Himsa) offers up one of his best vocal perfomances. | 7 | | Hutcher Hauntpop Vol. 2
(Ambient, experimental) A very interesting project that mashes pop songs with ambient brilliance. Basically, where pop songs go to die; haunting but still fun as fuck. (Still need to write a review for this one, sorry AnimalsAsSummit). | 8 | | The Amazing Picture You
(Folk, psych/indie rock) Some great atmospheric tunes on this one; it can get a little samey but it doesn't take away from the highlights being some of the best tracks I've heard all year. | 9 | | Crypt Sermon Out of the Garden
(Traditional doom) Dirty-sounding doom metal with ripping guitar solos. Overall a very fun listen. | 10 | | Blood Gemini Snow Season
(Ambient, experimental) Beautiful wordless female vocals mix with atmospheric hip-hop beats. Highly recommended. | 11 | | Northaunt Istid I-II
(Dark ambient) Vast and expansive, this album mixes field recordings with icy soundscapes perfectly. It's slow going at times, but a massive and immersive experience. | 12 | | Caina Setter of Unseen Snares
(Black metal) One man black metal that incorporates just enough outside influences to stand out amongst his peers. | 13 | | Abstracter Wound Empire
(Doom metal, sludge) Songwriting is killer on this one, very epic in scope and worthy of more attention. | |
