ChoccyPhilly
05.18.15 | 1. I'm not American and the dole doesn't work like that here. It also has really really shit pay and I'd rather work a menial job
2. Mconalds actually has a better image here than over in the states.
3. I'm not just applying to these places. I'll be snooping around in for some retail jobs and a barista job too but no one wants to take an inexperienced noob.

i was surprised Waitrose didnt hand deliver their letter to me the smarmy bastards. I do remember the email being slightly condescending. |

05.18.15 | I would never want to work in the fast food industry, before I got into sales all I did was work warehouse jobs for like furniture and carpet stores. This is also a job where they can hire you with literally no experience |

ChoccyPhilly
05.18.15 | @tyler It's a bit difficult when you live in a town with 7000 people, don't have a car and no connections. Like I've said several times before, as long as it's not a full time cleaning job or the call centre, I couldn't care less |
MuhNamesTyler
05.18.15 | Ah, that sucks. I'm originally from a small town as well so I know how that is, I had to commute about an hour to work every day, not having a car would've made it very hard/impossible. |

And I've really got a lot of sympathy for him, was in a similar position recently. Though it's a little more complicated down here, but still. Not even giving an applicant an interview, if he's about to head off to university soon, is just idiotic. |
DeadGuy
05.24.15 | if you go through a temp agency, they will do the work for you, and you have a better chance of getting a higher paying job than minimum wage. Yea it's temp, but just bust ass and you will get hired on permanently. |

05.24.15 | Yes, it is. A guy that is about to study is very likely more intelligent than most guys that usually apply for such a job. That should mean so much more than it does right now. But no, just finishing school he should have 10 years of working experience, everything else is unacceptable. The guys working at McDonald's are usually as smart as a piece of wood, I'm quite sure Choccy could top that easily without having to work for a few years there. |

>but how will they actually know that? how will they know he's "intelligent" and not just sliding through university like lots of people do, earning their grades and forgetting the materials after the courses end? they're not gonna ask for records and grades, that's not their responsibility. but one of their responsibilities is that you don't just assume shit like that for a professional environment.
"But no, just finishing school he should have 10 years of working experience, everything else is unacceptable."
>the demand for experience is kind of wild (unless it's being asked for experience from experience) but it's necessary. going to school doesn't build work experience and if you can't follow orders for the good of [the company, business, organization, etc.] then I don't care how smart you are, you're not gonna continue further.
"The guys working at McDonald's are usually as smart as a piece of wood, I'm quite sure Choccy could top that easily without having to work for a few years there."
>probably, but then again everyone has to start from somewhere even if it's from scratch. working from the bottom or menial [should] build work ethic, discipline, and a drive to strive for a higher position or better jobs. |

05.24.15 | choccy could be some dipshit who seems like a nice guy here, dresses like shit, can know more of biomolecular engineering than me, and doesn't present himself well enough to catch my interest in hiring him through the application process. that is not my problem as a hiring dude. if they want to work, they have to apply themselves more than just on paper |
KrazyKris
05.24.15 | "but how will they actually know that?"
My answer applies to your second point too: Just give him a damn 20-min interview. It's easy to find out, if someone's actually willing to work and not just earn easy money, if he's able to think for himself and not just follow every guideline blindly (which, ok, McDonald's might not even want from their employees). And you can also find out, if he's able to follow order and knuckle under. Talking to a person tells you way more than any shitty degree, certificate or even a CV.
Just to be clear though, my basic assumption also included that Choccy passed his exams quite well. I don't really know that, maybe his grades are awful. Of course, if you just squeaked through, you can't expect anything.
But to once again talk about me: I passed with all A's and getting an interview for anything but an apprenticeship is still quite impossible. |

05.25.15 | "A guy that is about to study is very likely more intelligent than most guys that usually apply for such a job."
As much as I'm loving the support, I know some proper idiots who are going to uni. i also know some highly intelligent people working washing up jobs and in supermarkets too. But generally speaking, i definitely see where you're coming from. I don't see anything wrong with a menial job as it's a different kind of meat to studying and arguably more transferrable and practical. but yeah, like i've said before in this thread, i'm not going to the call centre.
"doesn't present himself well enough to catch my interest in hiring him through the application process. that is not my problem as a hiring dude."
"Just give him a damn 20-min interview."
The issue isn't solely on qualifications. I basically got straight As in my GCSE yet I have mates who averaged Cs who went for the same job as me in my local supermarkets and they have it. There were some other factors that played into it:
- Refused to start until 3 weeks after applying due to endless exams; my other mates started immediately as they had 1 or 2 exams
- I live in a tiny village so the mcdonalds and KFC posts were all quite far away but accessible by train. Perhaps they wanted someone who could literally be there on demand.
- 0 work experience looks shit and no combination of elegant bullshit can cover it up |
Sowing
05.25.15 | Honestly there's nothing wrong with working at McDonald's or another fast food joint. Yes there are better shitty jobs, but at 18 you can gain valuable knowledge from working with challenging customers and coworkers. I worked in a deli for several years, and I don't think I'd have the ability to deal with difficult people that I do now had it not been for that job. |

05.25.15 | Have you ever been rejected from certain positions and been told that you're "over qualified"? That one really annoys me.
Most jobs, however menial, teach important skills. Teamwork, dealing with people, effective communication, handling complaints, these are all important skills to have when you're ready to enter the job market. If you get to the interview stage, try and show example of when you've demonstrated these skills (sports teams, art plays, any volunteering, even getting feedback from your tutor). Good luck man. |
