06.11.15 | AIC no question at all |
deathschool
06.11.15 | I prefer Nirvana, but both rule.
Soundgarden is the clear winner though. |
Supercoolguy64
06.11.15 | i've never finished AIC's discog, so i really cant say
both are very great tho, leaning a little on AIC tho because i get some really heavy feels from them |
CK
06.11.15 | Deathschool wins for Soundgarden.

06.11.15 | Honestly... I like In Utero more than any AiC EP/album, but overall AiC is better. |
ArsMoriendi
06.11.15 | In Utero > Sap > Jar of Flies > Dirt > Bleach > Alice in Chains > Facelift > Nevermind > Incesticide |

06.11.15 | Nirvana's more of a shotgun to the face, while Alice In Chains slowly injects itself into your veins. |

Dylan620
06.11.15 | AIC |
TalonsOfFire
06.11.15 | Definitely Alice in Chains, both are among the best rock bands of the 90s |
ArsMoriendi
06.11.15 | Yeah Soundgarden is better than both agreed. |
CK
06.11.15 | Yeah they're definitely among the best, not quite among my favorites though. Well, AIC maybe |

06.11.15 | Hmmm
1.Soundgarden

06.11.15 | Local H in top 5 favorite grunge bands
holy shit soccer, mad respect |
CK
06.11.15 | I do grunge rankings by album, not band, because almost every grunge band has half or more of a discography that pisses me off or just simply isn't even grunge |
porcupinetheater
06.11.15 | Alice in Chains is legitimately amazing, Nirvana wouldn't have half the legacy they do if Kurt Cobain hadn't killed himself. |
ArsMoriendi
06.11.15 | "Nirvana wouldn't have half the legacy they do if Kurt Cobain hadn't killed himself."
I hate when people say shit like that. He had hit songs and a huge fanbase before he offed himself and In Utero is brilliant, sure Alice in Chains is better on the whole, but it's silly to think Nirvana would have faded into obscurity. |
Supercoolguy64
06.11.15 | ^^^^^^ |
porcupinetheater
06.11.15 | Didn't say they would've disappeared or anything, but outside of this site they're pretty much THE grunge band that seems to be the standard everything else is measured against, and I don't think that would've happened otherwise. But of course, I don't really know shit, cause In Utero was far away the best thing they did, maybe there would've been classics to come. |
Aftertheascension
06.11.15 | Aic wins no contest |
ArsMoriendi
06.11.15 | Nirvana was about to break up around 1994 actually... they had 1 more album left in them tops except for maybe a reunion album. |
CK
06.11.15 | lol if Kurt were alive and they released a reunion album, I honestly bet it would SUUUUUUUUUUUUCK |
Royl123
06.11.15 | Nirvana for me! Kurt Cobain is a god |
Supercoolguy64
06.11.15 | suposidly the fourth album would of been really intimate and "quiet" compared to in utero
sucks that kurt died before they even started, i would of really liked to hear what they would of made
|
CK
06.11.15 | Meh. Well, Unplugged in NY will always be my favorite by them. They knew how to do a live show |
Royl123
06.11.15 | ^agreed hard |
ArsMoriendi
06.11.15 | "suposidly the fourth album would of been really intimate and "quiet" compared to in utero"
Yeah they said it'd be R.E.M. influenced since him and Stipe were friends. |
argonaut
06.11.15 | AIC no contest, although Nirvana's nice too.
Soundgarden over everything. |
Avagantamos
06.11.15 | AIC by a landslide |

06.11.15 | They're tied for me, behind Soundgarden. Nirvana had the best melodies though. |
DamnVanne
06.11.15 | I don't care for either, but Alice in Chains doesn't suck ass. Even through my bias I can see that. |
DoofusWainwright
06.11.15 | Nirvana ruled the planet and AIC just played to the metalhead community really so both playing different games - come on chaps Nirvana should get mad props for breaking the mainstream and producing music that didn't suck... |
bach
06.11.15 | can't compare them they're absolutely nothing alike. but nirvana |
Davil667
06.11.15 | What Doofus said is absolutely true. I'd never say Nirvana is bad or sh!t like that cause they were groundbreaking and opened doors for various awesome bands. I definitely prefer AIC though as they weren't as polished and more edgy somehow. I also think Stone Temple Pilots deserve a mention when speaking of this genre. They ruled so hard. |
EvoHavok
06.11.15 | Alice in Chains. I enjoy Nirvana a lot, though. |
Rik VII
06.11.15 | Grunge is not my cup of tea, but from what I've heard, Alice in Chains wins by a mile. |
zakalwe
06.11.15 | I can only speak as someone who lived it.
AIC were great and released amazing stuff in a time of Siamese Dream, Pearl Jam, Angel Dust, NIN, Automatic for the People, Soundgarden, Blind Melon. All of that led to further exploration into Dino Jr, Sonic Youth, guided by voices, pavement, mudhoney.....on and on it went and amazing music was discovered.
We were a generation who were told how great punk was but it was 'dead.' Dad rock was of a bygone era that may as well have been 1000yrs past. Metal was great but pantomime, hip hop was fresh but unrelatable, indie was great but studenty, dance was drug fulled incomprehensible 'beats' everything else was mainstream 'teenybopper' shite.
In came Nirvana.
It's all very well having the music to judge who is better and having a personal connection to something, heralding albums as classic but nothing comes close to the impact Nirvana had at the time. The spoilt, angsty, confused, apathetic, sarcastic, idealistic, naive, bitter teens had a band to hang their hat on.
Have better albums been released by better bands? Of course.
Has anything come close to the jolt Nirvana provided in blowing the doors off and making teens culturally significant? Nothing has been seen since that is even remotely similar.
Some things are more important than great albums. Nirvana >

almosttolerable
06.11.15 | Soundgarden
I like jar of files more than any other nirvana album, but aside from dirt, i never got into the other aic lps (sap is good too)

Based on impact = nirvana

06.11.15 | Nirvana is obviously winning. With AIC a close second and Soundgarden dead last even as a write in holy |

06.11.15 | AIC |
DoofusWainwright
06.11.15 | Zak has summed it up with Nirvana - at the time they ruled supreme, not even a competition - to think so is ridiculous. AIC were a cool niche band - Nirvana slayed everyone, no exception |
adr
06.11.15 | Dirt is better than every Nirvana album tbh |
DoofusWainwright
06.11.15 | Nirvana passed the raw talent and charisma test - Nirvana unplugged is twice the album that AIC unplugged is, not even close - to argue otherwise is just being contrary for the sake of it |

AiC wins by a country mile |
Tunaboy45
06.11.15 | Is it even a contest? AIC always. |
DoofusWainwright
06.11.15 | It's not a contest lol, like comparing Anthrax to Metallica - what you lot on about? Who is bigger - the Beatles or Bay City Rollers...? |
LepreCon
06.12.15 | Nirvana, I guess, since I've given their three albums and Unplugged 5's, but had they continued they would have probably been shite by now. AiC are still going strong even without Layne, their latest two albums are excellent. |
grannypantys
06.12.15 | nirvana was the band that got me into music back in the day
AIC is the band I still listen to though

deathschool
06.12.15 | I love you fuckers saying it's no contest, when there have been a fair number of votes for both |
CK
06.12.15 | lol yeah there's like an equal amount of "I'm gonna lean towards Nirvana" and "AIC by a landslide you pussies" |
deathschool
06.12.15 | Sounds like the people voting for Nirvana are more well-rounded tbh. |

06.12.15 | Let's be honest Alice in Chains continuing without Layne is just awful and equals an instant disqualification from this contest. |

grannypantys
06.12.15 | communist |
Ocean of Noise
06.12.15 | Admittedly Layne probably would have wanted them to continue without him but yeah the last 2 albums are boring af
Nevermind is worse than both of them of course |
DoofusWainwright
06.12.15 | No problem with the band hiring new members and coming up with a different band name and hopefully a new musical identity - not a fan of bands resurrecting themselves without their charismatic frontman and just getting someone in to faithfully copy his style and try and mimic the old songwriting too.
I genuinely prefer Jerry Cantrell's Boggy Depot album than the recent AIC ones - at least I got a feeling of what Cantrell was about and it felt natural.
OofN - By pretty much any measure Nevermind is a more successful and authentic album that the two recent copycat Chains albums but hey, glad someone likes the exciting new incarnation of AIC, I've heard by 2021 they'll have written a new song almost identical and equally awesome to Would? - can't wait, just keep holding on... |
