Rowan5215 07.21.15	re-watching it too although skipping the crappy episodes and largely focusing on the important ones due to time constraints so I'll probably inevitably skip some of these - will probably never re-watch it in full again :-( but yeah 1 and 15 are two of the all-time best, One Breath is beautiful (although hardly underrated, it's the fave of most of the creative team of the show), and Die Hand is one of the few episodes that's legitimately scary even without nostalgia. The left turn in the second half of that episode is fucking insane would like to add War of the Coprohages (Darin's weakest script but still witty af), Little Green Men and Dod Kalm

YoYoMancuso 07.21.15	Season 2 is by far the most horrifying season haha. The fluke worm, Duane Barry, the weird serial killer who carved words into people's chests, Donnie Pfaster, the satanic substitute teacher, that guy who emerges from Scully's hand, the freaky twin who jumps out of his conjoined brother's rib cage, the demon twin, the disgusting boil plague and the cannibalistic chicken company. A lot of people think the mytharc trails off around when the black oil starts for some reason. It's actually really strong until about season 7.
Insurrection 07.21.15	'that guy who emerges from Scully's hand' this is the only one i dont remember lol, which one was that? season 2 also has the best myth arc episodes of the series imo - Colony/End Game and Anasazi. most seasons have some great scares tho. Home is still disturbing as fuck, season 1 had Beyond the Sea, Ice, and Tooms which were creepy as hell, 3 had Grotesque which is like straight up gothic horror, 4 has Sanguinarium probably the most graphic/gory episode of the series, 5 had Detour and Chinga (predators and a killer doll) etc. seasons 2 and 3 are my favorites as a whole. what ive seen from season 6 is amazing as well. i just love how they can have an episode thats silly and hysterical (Syzygy) then the next is literally Grotesque, and both are brilliant for what they are

Honestly the mythos is very solid up to and including the first movie but it really trails off and around series 6 and pretty much goes to the gutter in the subsequent ones. 6 7 and 8 still some fantastic MOTW's though

Insurrection 07.21.15	i think home is a classic cause its so ballsy for a scifi show and they executed it perfectly. its basically the X files meets the texas chainsaw massacre, and its one of the few episodes that ill never ever forget. the mother, the bludgeoning scene, that song playing in the background... "it's so wonderful, wonderful"...creepy shit and its probably the only episode in the series that is straight up no frills horror and i fucking love it for that

Insurrection 07.21.15	true, but home isnt so much unsettling as it is disturbing and really stuck with me. mind you i saw it when i was a kid when my dad was getting me into the show, but i was fascinated by it and it probably has a lot to do with why im a horror fanatic now sanguinarium is more shock horror if anything, its just lots of blood and gore for the sake of it. home actually has narrative and believability, which makes it all the more chilling. also loved the ambiguous ending but i can appreciate its not everyone's cup of tea

Insurrection 07.21.15	x files is just one of those shows that can nail any genre they want imo. bad blood and small potatoes are comedy gold, one breath is dramatic as a mother, dont even have to get started on mystery/scifi/horror/thriller. its refreshing when a show can be so diverse yet have such grounded and interesting characters
DrGonzo1937 07.21.15	"Reyes sucks" I actually didn't mind her. She grew on me in season 9. It's a real shame so much was happening behind the scenes around that time. Season 9 sucked for the most part, but Doggett and Reyes were doing a fantastic job of holding the show up; if the writing wasn't so inconsistent and messy, the two would have done a great job taking over the show. And season 8 is criminally underrated, too.

TalonsOfFire 07.21.15	Yeah season 9 wasn't bad but definitely the weakest, and as far as I'm concerned the mythology ended with Two Fathers/One Son, probably my all time favorite TV episode(s). I've been watching this series on and off for about half of my life now, seen most of the stand-alone episodes and will probably spend some of the summer watching more. Seasons 5 and 6 are probably the most consistently amazing, but 4 had a lot of great variety. Everything from Small Potatoes to Home lol

TalonsOfFire 07.21.15	Agreed on Season 1, it's definitely the most subtle. Nothing got too insane yet, and the mythology episodes especially really worked due to how mysterious and intriguing they were in introducing everything.

Insurrection 07.21.15	6 has some of the coolest episodes of the series imo. Dreamland, Triangle, Field Trip, Drive, Monday, Arcadia (top 5 episode for me). again i havent seen the myth arc episodes that season but it feels like the most experimental the show has ever been

porcupinetheater 07.22.15	Darkness Falls was always one of my favorites, but it was also the first one I ever saw when I was like 7 or 8 and it freaked the living shit out of me, so there might be some crazy nostalgia bias in there.
Insurrection 07.22.15	i always thought darkness falls was considered one of the best. its one of the first times mulder and scully are in actual danger and i loved how it revolved around nature instead of the usual alien stuff saw teliko yesterday. i didnt think it was terrible, just a by the numbers motw with a dumb MO and a pathetic attempt at a new tagline. seriously "deceive, inveigle, obfuscate" may be the least catchy group of words ever
Rowan5215 07.22.15	Improbable is the only episode I would recommend in good faith from S9, very enjoyable concept Teso Dos Bichos is objectively the worst episode ever but at least it's enjoyably awful and not just mind-numbingly boring like S9. I actually recommend watching it to everyone who's watching through the series just so they can experience the cat scene but yea Darkness Falls gets a bit of flak but I always loved it - that ending in the government facility is genuinely unnerving "but what if it doesn't work?" "that is not an option, Mr. Mulder."

TIME FOR YOU TO PUCKER UP AND KISS MY ASS although the resolution kinda annoys me cos it's like, if there's now hundreds of Navajo people across the country who've memorised the contents of the secret government files, what's to stop Mulder just driving on out there and asking one of them? bit of a badly drawn conclusion
Insurrection 07.22.15	that's...a good question lol i think my favorite CSM confrontation was when mulder when to his house (i think it was one breath) and pulled a gun on him and CSM was like "don't threaten me, mulder. ive watched presidents die"
Rowan5215 07.22.15	That's probably my single favourite scene from the show tbh the mythology could do nothing but go downhill from that one point mulder lowers the gun and CSM's just like "...and that's why I'll win" and it's fucking SO GOOD
Insurrection 07.22.15	dammit now i want to see that episode again. that was also the first time we saw CSM outside the fbi building iirc, and in his own house no less which made it all the more intense now that i think about it almost all my favorite scenes involve mulder getting really emotional. the scene in Paper Hearts when the child killer is explaining what happened to mulder's sister was so chilling and david duchovny was just flawless
Rowan5215 07.22.15	you see him briefly in an operating room in I think Young at Heart when the killer is dying (very vague memory of that one) it's unclear whether that's an in-building room or an outside hospital but yeah either way One Breath was the first time they started adding dimensions to CSM instead of him just being a cipher for the mystery which is where it really started gettin good David can actually sell the emotional scenes very well - like when he breaks down crying in One Breath after giving up, that shit is intense - but he's either rarely given the material or rarely goes the distance to do it. he's not bad the rest of the time but apart from the comedy lines which he relishes he's fairly one-note
Insurrection 07.22.15	that's what i love about him though. all he cares about is finding the truth, theres really nothing more to his personality other than uncovering mysteries from what happened to his sister and since that scarred him when he was a child it makes sense that he would be emotionally detached as an adult. the only times he gets vulnerable are when his family or scully are in danger. the scene of him going to his dad's house and apologizing and crying was painful to watch (i forget which episode it was, season 2 i think) and when his mom was in the hospital in the season 3 finale, i think its a testament to his character that he values family so much and is otherwise fairly distant he almost always spits out dry sarcasm at some of the most inappropriate times too, like in leonard betts when they were cutting up his decapitated head mulder was like "let's get a slice to go" he's always been one of my favorite TV characters and david duchovny is my mancruch so i can gush about him all day lol
Rowan5215 07.22.15	yeah he rules but Duchovny definitely has a tendency to be too familiar with the role and not push himself enough unless he's really given the impetus - I definitely think he's a good actor though to an extent you can rationalise his mental scarring from childhood but honestly Duchovny doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who gets that deep into a character, I think he tends to stay on the surface level of droll sarcasm a little too much I fucking LOVE all his encounters with Krycek though, you can just see in their eyes how much they fucking despise each other. guy who played Krycek was a terrific actor

Will give er a runthrough sometimes my fave episodes are usually the ones where Mulder and Scully are taken out of their set roles in the show - eg Beyond the Sea (reversing the skeptic/believer roles), Die Hand (they're pretty much just bystanders who fail to make any impact), Wetwired with Scully effectively taking the antagonist role, etc etc

Insurrection 08.01.15	i was wondering what happened to the bees but the movie answered that for me. the only thing that wouldve made that bee scene better is if nic cage himself was there and yea drive is amazing. one of the few episodes mulder actually bonds with a one-off character and you actually felt for him

Rowan5215 08.05.15	think the thing for me is that some of my fave X-Files are the ones that trick you into thinking they're something they're not and then do a left turn halfway through, which is why I love that final stretch of S3 so goddamn much Avatar - think it's gonna be a succubus haunting tale but it's actually all CSM orchestrating from the shadows (also some beautiful scenes with Skinner and his wife) Quaghire - you think it's gonna be a monster hunt but it's really a character investigation of Mulder and Scully and the monster's actually just a crocodile Wetwired - looks like an isolated case of spookiness but then Scully gets taken by it, the second half of the episode is Mulder chasing her and then failing to stop the criminals who were of course controlled by CSM

EyesWideShut 08.17.15	Home is a stone cold classic.. its far from underrated.. Beyond The Sea is easily one of my fav episodes, Brad Dourif killed it.
Insurrection 08.17.15	not really rape cause the mother was consenting to fucking her sons. i mean you can argue that cause she was a quadriplegic she didnt have much choice but she was practically begging for it at the end

Insurrection 08.17.15	it can't be like it was all a dream because everything happened. it's just the eeriness that this religious group recognized in the community were alien colonists all along and fled when their cover was breached

JohnWick 08.20.15	Field Trip, Monday, Roadrunners, and Via Negativa are all awesome underrated episodes. I feel like nobody ever talks about those. They're some of my favorites of the entire show.
YoYoMancuso 08.20.15	Signs And Wonders is the snake handling one. I actually like it Dod Kalm is really solid but the ending is lazy I agree
Rowan5215 08.21.15	Dod Kalm has a dodgy ending but the rest of it puts it well above Gender Bender and the like. Scully's final monologue is one of the show's best moments Don't remember Signs and Wonders at all

Insurrection 08.24.15	thats the only part of the episode i remember. also mulder getting into a fight with snakes didnt care for it much tbh. none of the animal ones did anything for me
