Symphony X Ranked
Symphony X was one of the bands that got me into metal in the first place. I waited to do this until the newest album dropped and I freshened up on some of the stuff I hadn't listened to often before ranking the discography. So here it is. |
9 | | Symphony X Symphony X
There are some neat songs on here (and some so-so ones), but the vocalist really didn't fit with the music. It'd be cool if they remade this album with Russell Allen on the vocals, but that probably won't happen. |
8 | | Symphony X Iconoclast
I don't see why this had to be a double album. The album's pretty hit or miss. Some songs are pretty good, but some have Allen using his harsher voice too much or in improper places, some songs have mediocre riffs, etc. Also the songwriting is kind of weak, resulting in a lot of unmemorable songs. |
7 | | Symphony X Underworld
Originally I had this at 5, but repeated listens over time made me pick out phoned in sections and realize that some songs are artificially extended for no good reason. It's more consistent than Iconoclast at least. I think it's safe to say they won't be going back to their neoclassical roots. |
6 | | Symphony X The Damnation Game
Their sophomore outing showed them finding their stride that would culminate with their next album. Some good stuff here, and the rest of their discography from here on out is pretty solid. |
5 | | Symphony X V: The New Mythology Suite
And here my weird opinion strikes. I don't know what it is with this album, but I can't get into it for some reason. It's certainly the most neoclassical-inspired of their works, and you'd think that'd drag me in. But here we are. Realistically, this should be in the top 3, but I just haven't felt this album every time I've given it a chance. |
4 | | Symphony X Paradise Lost
One of the first albums that introduced me to this band. Some fond memories here, but I can power through the nostalgia and see some of the issues this album has. Some songs have weak parts and that second ballad is really unnecessary. This album does pick up steam in the latter half with some killer songs (besides that ballad). I can see how this might have turned off longtime fans since there's pretty much no neoclassical feel on this at all. |
3 | | Symphony X Twilight in Olympus
I don't know why this album goes under the radar of many people. It's pretty damn good. I guess it's just sandwiched between two of their highest-acclaimed albums, so it gets overshadowed. |
2 | | Symphony X The Odyssey
The other album that introduced me to this band. The first half's alright, but the second half is some of the best stuff they've done. The Odyssey feels a bit too bloated-- I think it would be better with a few minutes trimmed off of it. Awakening is the best song they've done. |
1 | | Symphony X The Divine Wings of Tragedy
Of course this is their best album. Everything just clicks here, and even the 20 minute title track does not overstay its welcome. My only real complaint about this album is Pharaoh is quite the shift from the soothing outro of The Accolade. |
