basically theres a piece of foam inside that reduced the soundstage, one you take them off, it essentially becomes a 598 since it has the same driver |
skeames1214
09.24.15 | @Faceless if you like the sen sound signature 598's are like a hundred bucks now, which is a really good deal. That way you don't have to bother with modding the 558's. i owned a pair for a couple years (that I bought for $250 :/). |
FacelessMan
09.24.15 | doesnt really matter man, they have the same drivers and its really easy to open the headphones and take the foam tape off, i got mine for 120 used but in perfect condition |
FacelessMan
09.24.15 | btw i live in canada so they cost like 100 more here |
FacelessMan
09.24.15 | also i like the look of the 558 more :) |
skeames1214
09.24.15 | fair enough! Didn't know the foam killed the soundstage on the 558's, that's interesting. The 598's are ugly as sin, i'll give ya that. Never would have worn them outside tho, so not a huge deal for me. |
FacelessMan
09.24.15 | haha true that, i see why some people like the european car look but its not really for me, the limited edition ones look sweet tho, black and red

09.24.15 | if you ever get a chance demo some planar magnetic headphones. its a dif type of technology that basically has drivers spread out all over the headphone, as opposed to on the edges like ortho-dynamic headphones. Planars makes the bass a LOT punchier, and generally gives music a more full sound. |
FacelessMan
09.24.15 | i'll check it out thanks |

09.24.15 | 558s are the fucking best, but I broke mine a week ago and am having to make do with some old shitty Sony ones until I can afford another pair. |

09.24.15 | i'm pretty much into the idea that good music will sound good regardless of how you listen to it (within reason), but nice 'phones have helped me pick apart some music that just got muddled on my shitty nissan car speakers. I'll probably invest in a pair of Sennheisers once I pay off some more of my bills though. Maybe around Christmas, my car bill and 2 of my college loans will be done with. I really want a good pair of headphones. |
JWT155
09.24.15 | Just a fair warning, a lot of Sennheisers Headphones are open ear, which means that a lot of audio leaks out and people in the room will hear what you are listening to. If you plan on using these in your house alone they're fantastic but essentially obsolete for public use. |
DinosaurJones
09.24.15 | Ooooh, that's good to know, since I listen to music at work. That probably wouldn't go over well.

09.24.15 | Nah, open still refers to the big over ear one. Essentially part of them is left open so the sound isn't confined and they tend to sound better because of this, however it means everyone around you can hear what you're listening to. |

09.24.15 | I don't mind earbuds but most fit terribly in my ear and are uncomfortable as hell. Although they break easily, the Sony MDR-ED12LP are my fav earbuds of all time. |
JWT155
09.24.15 | @fort These are open ear http://crev.vo.llnwd.net/o42/audioreview/images/products/medium450/product_292618_44666.jpg essentially the "grill" part on the ear is all that seperates the inside of the padding and the outside. Anything played with these headphones will "leak" sound so people next to you will hear audibly what you're listening to. Likewise, the listener can very easily hear whats going on around them. |
Fort23
09.24.15 | i got you, those are the worst |
SCREAM!
09.24.15 | Yeah JWT explained it well there. I don't see anything that leads me to believe the ones you posted are open but it's hard to say for sure without knowing which headphones they are. 09.25.15 | @skeames1214 thank you, I'll look into that. Not too pricey. And the Grados are open ended anyways so I wouldn't be taking them out. |
skeames1214
09.25.15 | @skoopy open grados, that's interesting! All the ones i've tried have been closed. I bet that helps them a lot with less mids-oriented music. |
Skoop
09.25.15 | @skeames1214 Yeah it was my first experience with open headphones (and my first experience with Grado) and it took a little while to get used to but everything from the highs to treble to bass sounds far and away better than anything else I've heard. |
skeames1214
09.25.15 | yeah open headphones are imo almost always the better option if you've got the living situation to support them. I live with my gf in an apartment, so loud speakers are out of the question. Open headphones are the closest approximation of the sound good speakers give you. |

09.25.15 | Been looking up the ATH M40X and the M50X and there's a lot of positive feedback on both and some people actually prefer the 40s over the 50s. Was wondering if anyone here had experiences or comparisons to offer on both? |
emester
09.25.15 | I have the M50's but I have also gave the M40s a go as well. While I do personally prefer the M50s's you'd honestly be fine with 40s.
Currently only have my ATH M50s and my V Moda M80s up at school with me. Really miss my Grados |
SCREAM!
09.25.15 | What do you prefer about the M50s? The main gripe I've heard about them is their bass which some people feel is too strong whereas the 40s are apparently more balanced |
emester
09.25.15 | I just feel the overall clarity is slightly better and the bass does give a little punch but it honestly isn't overbearing at all. Also you have to consider this is coming from a guy who only just dove into the technicalities of headphones last year, as before that I jammed everything on Beats or Apple headphones. When it all comes down to it, the M50 are a very balanced pair of headphones that give a realistic yet enjoyable listen. M40's are just about as good imo tho |
SCREAM!
09.25.15 | Fair enough. Prices on amazon.ca are 129 for the 40s and 199 for the 50s so I'm def leaning towards the 40s atm |

09.25.15 | You'd be set with the 40's SCREAM. Enjoy them! AT makes some great shit |
Essence
09.25.15 | scream i'd say the only thing to consider with the m40s is that they are supposed to clamp pretty hard, but as emester said they are the almost identical, less bass-heavy little brother of the m50s |
SCREAM!
09.25.15 | The neutrality of them is part of what is drawing me towards them as well. The ones I'm using now are a little bass heavy and they sound amazing for some genres but hinders others. More neutral headphones sound generally a lot more versatile and I figure you can EQ them based on what you're looking for |

I would love a pair, but I need headphones that are portable since I'm usually at work or college so I needed something that wouldn't drive people around me crazy |

09.25.15 | that's a nice pair of phones supreme. once you hit roughly the m50x and ah900x range (in terms of broad headphone quality), improvements in quality are going to be a lot more gradual. you start to feel the diminishing return pretty hard. for instance, there's not a massive difference between my v-modas and beyers, but they serve different purposes (closed, take em places vs open, gotta be alone) |
