09.07.16 | I have one friend who I can get into a discussion about sometimes. |
BlushfulHippocrene
09.07.16 | Yes for 6 and 7! 1 and 2 are cool, too. I don't have a lot of friends into similar music, but a good talking point has always been popular hip hop and R&B. If I keep up with The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Drake etc. then there's an endless talking point. Other than that, not so much at all. That said, I'm not quite in an environment with a lot of adults. Are people not much into music receptive to recommendations? Interesting you're trying to get them on it. |
MyNameIsPencil
09.07.16 | see 3 of my best friends I can all talk music too which is coolio |
AsleepInTheBack
09.07.16 | @owen good idea though I'm a lazy dude when it comes to shows, should go to more
@blushful huh thats interesting. see my friends aren't even that into big mainstream artists, they're just not really music people; they'll listen whats on the radio as background listening and they'll have favourite clubbing songs but they don't seek out any music just to listen to. From my experience my friends have been pretty unreceptive to any recommendations unless I give them super easy listening stuff, but I think they're unusually unreceptive. |
AsleepInTheBack

09.07.16 | I have friends in bands but they tend to have quite narrow taste, just liking the one or two genres they enjoy most. My brother has done a few things in the industry (production, has released a few electronic albums). I can chat to him a lot and we still have the habit of sharing mix tapes.
My other half actually takes an interest and after being together four years we can chat about music a lot. Going to a lot of gigs together has helped.
Other than that not really. It's probably a huge reason most people sign up here. |
owen
09.07.16 | @AsleepInTheBack go for it, I've met like-minded people to talk about music with for hours |
AsleepInTheBack
09.07.16 | Cool stuff Doof, hoping that the person I end up with is musically open minded like that. and agreed about that being the appeal of Sput.

*sigh* At least I like Jamiroquai. |

09.07.16 | One of me mates is in a band, likes his 80s metal and a few odds and sods. A few mates who really are into their music but I dunno I am a bit weird in how it's an all encompassing thing for me. Without a shadow of doubt I'll be banging on about it for Christ knows how long in a get together in the pub.
The wife digs a fair bit but she'll moan at a lot of stuff I have on in the car but we can have great chats about the spirit of it all. |
DinosaurJones
09.07.16 | I can chat with music with 2 of my best friends. Actually, its usually one of the more common topics.
I'm also in a band, so I talk about a lot of music with my bandmates, but it's hard to go to in-depth into music with a 30 year old who thinks Blink-182 is the best band in the world |
AsleepInTheBack
09.07.16 | "I am a bit weird in how it's an all encompassing thing for me"
damn relatable. my friends find it bizarre that i can happily spend a day off on my own jamming music |

09.07.16 | i know an avid follower of pitchfork's best new music (electronic esp.) and i rec'd a buddy Jane Doe last year. our tastes don't line up, but it def is nice to have irl friends listening to stuff in the same ballpark.
but yea, a bit weird in how music's an all encompassing thing for me [3] |
SitruK6
09.07.16 | Don't get me wrong, i can talk about music with my friends the problem is that they are pretty narrow minded and lack the knowledge to go into really deep conversations |
AsleepInTheBack
09.07.16 | I get you SitruK6, though I try to be understanding of my friends who are like that as I was like that not too long ago. |
emester
09.07.16 | Probably just my girlfriend. Hell, I'd even argue that she is even more passionate about music than myself. Its amazing how our musical tastes complement each other so well. |
porcupinetheater
09.07.16 | I have a couple friends with fairly open minded taste, albeit more limited than your average Sputnikker, but the biggest roadblock to music discussion with them (and most people in general in my experience) is that they'll almost never listen to a God damn album from start to finish. They all put multi hundred song playlists on shuffle and cycle through, and that's all they do, so you're kind of limited to song-in-isolation discussion |
AsleepInTheBack
09.07.16 | "they'll almost never listen to a God damn album from start to finish"
yeah this is so frustrating, I dont get it when people do this, you can miss out on so much |
zakalwe
09.07.16 | I think sput has helped develop a taste for stuff I don't think I'd have given a listen to back in the day and reinforced the love for stuff that I was spinning 25 odd years ago. The digital age certainly helps. It's contributed to taking my passion to a different level which is intriguing.
It's just a shame 70% of sputters have fucking shit taste. |
Shemson
09.07.16 | Nah I don't have any friends who have the same taste as me. I have friends who like bits and pieces of the stuff I like though so if I hear a good album I've normally got 1/10 friends I can try and share it with. But then what's good music is all opinion so I don't think many people in the world would have a perfect musical partner. |

We're living in the best time for music lovers, solely because we have easy access to everything ever made and because its so much easier for an artist to get their work out than it used to be and so (whilst this results in a lot of shit music) some really interesting ideas can come to fruition without needing the backing of a body to distribute your work. |
TheGreatQ
09.07.16 | One of my two best friends and my sister can talk about music pretty well. Most of my friends only like whatever's currently on the radio.
"they'll almost never listen to a God damn album from start to finish. They all put multi hundred song playlists on shuffle"
This is incredibly annoying. I had a music class and one person on the class said she would never listen to an album because more than two or three songs off of one was a waste of time. |

09.07.16 | The flip side is the spirit has gone. The community is obviously there we are on a planet spanning forum talking about it (never fails to blow my mind) and we can instantly tap into a source to mine gold but something definitely died in the process.
|
RadicalEd
09.07.16 | The people in my social circle are either not that much into music (they listen to top 40 stuff and some "hot" spotify playlists) or they mostly leech of my musical tastes and generally don't discuss much with me, other than: "Yeah that album you gave me last week, is awesum. (or alternatively: "I didn't care for it", but that's not very often)
So I don't really discuss much music with my friends tbh. |

AsleepInTheBack
09.07.16 | I get you Zak. Somewhat related, I read an interesting article recently about how the underground music scene has died in a way. I mean sure there are less popular genres and lesser known bands, but the internet era means as soon as the underground does something particularly interesting the mainstream picks up on it and creates its own variant of it. |

09.07.16 | I've got a few friends into metal, but they're really only scraping the service so I'm trying to help them explore the genre.
One mate Is into a lot of indie and post rock - the antlers, godspeed, sigur ros, hotelier etc so I have decent chats with him, in fact he's introduced me to some artists too
The rest are into drum and bass, trap, modern hip hop etc which I like but I'm not quite as passionate about them
This is the reason I come on to sputnik I guess |

Glad that's the case for you, but it isn't for me. I don't enjoy the music they passionately love and when my Dad was worried for my mental health when he heard a song when I was testing a concert on my TV and mom misrepresenting my points to people who I say I don't like what they like I just decide to avoid it. My only goal was to show I listen to happier things than they stereotype me of listening to and show them one show, which I have so I left it there. |

No, I feel you, Burzum and Darkthrone rule (although I'd wager a good portion of people with the T don't even listen to Darkthrone, it's like the Black Metal Misfits logo shirt), but in my experience, it's almost always those two bands from the 2nd wave (I've heard "Mayhem sounds too weird" after one listen quite a bit), and then just a bunch of Pitchfork black metal |
AsleepInTheBack
09.07.16 | yeah not that long ago we had a long conversation about the different sub genres of metal and the difference between them, my dad was super interested and taken aback that it was as varied as it is |

DoofusWainwright
09.07.16 | My brother is heavily into electronic stuff so he does them mix tapes of way more stuff than I know. He probably listens to as much new music as I do but 90% electronic, plus a bit of hip hop and indie
My brother has much cooler taste than I do lol - he's an authority on hip hop and electronics so I I don't even try and compete. It's why I've listened to a fuck tonne more hip hop and electronic than I've rated here. Id like to raid his CD library actually. |
AsleepInTheBack

As you get older the wonderment in everything dissipates, the mind blowing albums disappear and enjoyment is found in little things. Being a hobbyist is great and there's a passion to it but it doesn't have that visceral emotional connection like I used to have. Just the passing of youth maybe.
Now I own a garden I can feel it drawing me in. I tried to listen to Clarence Clarity while doing some weeding the other day but it didn't really mix, need a sput gardening playlist

Dino is also single-handedly responsible for me having any interest whatsoever in ska because he used to jam it all the time and now I do too. We trade suggestions here and there whenever something cool pops up (like he turned me on to Monobody which was awesome).
In addition to DJ, I'm lucky enough that a couple of my childhood friends were really into music. Their interest really kinda sparked my initial interest and it's been a consistent topic since about 7th grade. One buddy is a prog-head drummer that really turned me onto Dream Theater and Rush and we share a mutual love for Flying Colors that got us playing music together. Another has wandered more into electronic/indie stuff, but turned me on to Bowie and we share a lot of eclectic interests like WU LYF and The Residents. I've always been kinda the middle-ground between the two of them musically.
I also have a handful of friends who are musicians or who I can talk music with, even if we don't have similar taste. A good number of my friends have been in bands since they were kids and they tend to attract other musicians who then become friends and it just kinda keeps going. I really dig it because even if our tastes don't jive I usually pick up at least something from them and I hope they get something from me. |

09.07.16 | Also I have a friend who always takes over playing music at parties and everyone hates it. It's the no-talent-needed version of an angsty white kid with an acoustic guitar. |

09.07.16 | damn Atomic youve got it lucky with so many people you can chat with about this stuff. |
AtomicWaste
09.07.16 | Yeah, man, it's pretty rad. Unfortunately, not many of them dig Orbs, though. |

09.07.16 | One day I'll get around to listening to ORBS, I promise. You know I'm bad at checking out new things. |

I do the same thing with some stuff you share, so it's all good, I understand! I thought you liked Giving Tree, though, so I'm surprised you haven't checked the full album! |
heck
09.07.16 | my best friend in high school liked a lot of the same alternative and indie stuff that I did at the time and we'd talk about music and loan each other CDs and stuff. sadly he ended up renouncing rock music and cutting off contact with me after he became a super hardcore christian youth pastor type. |

I have one or two, but that's about it. I had one friend in high school that was big into it, but our tastes tended to diverge over the years, and due to personal reasons I've barely spoken to him in years. My sister and most of my other friends listen to either nothing but pop music, or have narrow taste in general.
Also chatting with people at shows is always an option too. |

03.30.18 | Certainly
One of my friends/roommates is a bass guitar player who's really into jazz, funk, and prog metal. He's also a music major, so he knows way more about theory than I ever could haha. We bond over a shared appreciation for Primus and Zappa, but I think he likes jazz fusion stuff like Victor Wooten and Chick Corea the most.
Another roommate of mine really likes the modern lo-fi scene stuff and Spanish music. I think his favorite of the lo-fi stuff is this band called Jerry Paper.
My best friend loves music, but he's really mostly been listening to trap lately which kind of annoys me because I used to like things he was getting into. He got me into Big Black back in high school though, back when he was more into punk, noise, and other stuff like that... he had a whole Wolf Eyes phase (oh god)
I feel like finding people passionate about music isn't hard honestly

03.30.18 | Absolutely none at the moment. I used to when I was in university etc, but now is like... Sput exclusive. |
butcherboy
03.30.18 | a whole bunch.. most former band-mates are still as passionate in rambling about music.. if you put on your playlists in a bar, eventually they gravitate.. I got into a wild ranging conversation about noise rock with a guy just a few weeks ago, he really knew his stuff.. |
UpwardSpiral
03.30.18 | Yes one with exactly the same taste, although I rarely see him. We hadn't seen each other for years and then we realized we were listening to the same music and both adored the Glow pt 2. Now it's just messaging some recs once in a while. I get really passionate talking about music |
AsleepInTheBack
03.30.18 | Huh, cool to see this list revived. Things have changed for me a bit since, my girlfriend digs music and will try pretty much anything. A couple of mates of mine from uni also chat music with me, though it's all pretty pedestrian. |

03.30.18 | I've never bonded with anyone IRL over music lol. All I'm apparently known for is "angry screamy guy" music so you get what you get I suppose. Anyone I talk to music about just looks bored. But I could just be a shit person not gonna rule that out |
