| Silent Hill Ranked
In my opinion Silent Hill 1-3 (and the underappreciated 4) are the greatest games ever created and are essentially works of art. The soundtrack is one of the best aspects of the series and is the reason for it's unique and engaging atmosphere. This list is a ranking of the soundtracks, as well as some songs / albumthat sound like they could be on any of the soundtracks | 1 | | Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill 2
Unquestionably the best soundtrack of the series, it is the epitome of darkness, as well as beauty and sadness. It encapsulates everything good about Silent Hill 2 and the series as a whole with just sound. The guitar tracks are iconic and beautiful, and the ambient tracks can range from sad to terrifying. This is really the only game soundtrack which doubles as a fantastic well rounded album in its own right. The game itself is flawed mechanically but flawless in presentation and storytelling. The story is heartbreaking and bleak and is a must play by any horror fan. | 2 | | Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill 3
While not the best, Silent Hill 3's soundtrack is my personal favorite for the vocal tracks, most of which are extremely cheesy, but also memorable and nostalgic. Being the first game i played in the series, and the one i played the most and the first i fell in love with, Silent Hill 3 is and will always be my favorite game in the series, and though it's lacking in the pure sorrow and depressive atmosphere of 2, it makes up for with unrelenting terror and discomfort. | 3 | | Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill
I had a hard time choosing between this and 4's soundtrack. Silent Hill's Soundtrack is relentlessly sinister and oppressive, and is NOT easy listening. At all. It's an extremely admirable, filthy start to the series, and has a few iconic tracks; namely Not Tomorrow and Hometown. This is without a doubt the most aggressive soundtrack in the entire series, and the game reflects this. While i don't think it's as unsettling as 3, it's certainly terrifying and a classic, even in the shadow of the second game. | 4 | | Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill 4: The Room OST
Easily the most underrated game in the series due to it's odd change in direction and characterization, but playing through this again, i found it to be really terrifying and haunting (the water prison is one of the creepiest areas in any game imo) the soundtrack is not as memorable as other additions, but the guitar and vocal tracks are some of my favorite in the series. Room of Angel is gorgeous and a staple of the series, while Tender Sugar and Cradle of Forest are often forgotten unfairly (despite the latter being a bit corny) | 5 | | Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill Origins
While the rest of the series has good soundtracks, none ever came close to capturing the atmosphere of the others. Even those composed by Akira Yamaoka just felt different and not as impactful, which is comparable to the later games in general. While i believe Silent Hills would have been amazing, i'm sort of glad it never came to be as it undoubtably would have lacked the feel and heart of the first few games. A feeling that no other game (or other media) has ever captured again. | 6 | | Portishead Dummy
Instead of ranking the rest of the series, i wanted to share some songs which remind me of, or sound identical to Silent Hill songs.
Sour Times by Portishead is notable because it sounds almost identical to the Silent Hill main theme, or the Silent Hill 3 Hometown version. The album it's on is pretty much perfect, so if you haven't heard it, do so. | 7 | | Peter Murphy Deep
Cuts You Up by Peter Murphy.
I can't place my finger on it, but this song either sounds like a specific song from Silent Hill, or just sounds like it belongs on the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack. The instrumentation and melodies remind me a lot of the vocal tracks. | 8 | | Burial Untrue
Endorphin by Burial
This is on the list because the vocals are a sample of Lost Carol from the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack. I noticed it almost instantly when i heard it at first, and it drove me to become obsessed with this album. | 9 | | Ofdrykkja A Life Worth Losing
I Skuggan Av Mig Själv by Ofdrykkja
An almost identical copy (possibly intentional) of Not Tomorrow from Silent Hill 1 | 10 | | Massive Attack Mezzanine
A lot of moments on this album sound like they belong on Silent Hill 2 or 3's soundtracks, most likely because their soundtracks (for the most part) could be considered Trip Hop. | |

09.16.16 | Anyone know anymore songs that are comparable or share noticable similarities to the SH OST? I know there are a few that i just can't remember.
Axis of Perdition isn't on this list because despite the Silent Hill themes, they don't exactly capture the atmosphere they're going for.
I honestly feel like Homecoming has the most garbage soundtrack ever. It comes off as soulless, despite having a few catchy songs | RoundOnEndHiInMiddle
09.16.16 | the original silent hill is my favorite from both a game and a soundtrack standpoint, but 2 follows very close behind in both respects. the unreleased soundtrack for the original is one of my favorite albums of all time. like you said, definitely not easy listening at all. | Scoot
09.16.16 | i know pt isn't technically silent hill but it's the best of all of them | Brabiz
09.16.16 | 2 as a whole, and its soundtrack is such a draining emotional experience, but the soundtrack to 1 is a bit too abrassive and intense to merit casual listening. | Brabiz
09.16.16 | Scoot. More like Scoot on out of here because you're wrong. | SteakByrnes
09.16.16 | Silent Hill 2 will always be my favorite, both the music and the game | Brabiz
09.16.16 | 2 is definitely the best. But in my opinion 3 is the most immediately terrifying and is the most refined and polished. It's essentially a perfect game. It just boils down to the type of experience you're in the mood for. 2 and 3 are pretty much perfect. I find 2 is less intimidating, and is an extremely somber experience while 3 is unrelentingly terrifying | rabidfish
09.16.16 | based only on ST: 4-3-1-2
based on what game I think it's best overall: 1-3-2-4 (they're all great) | Gwyn.
09.16.16 | 2 will always always always and for all eternity be the best | ConcubinaryCode
09.16.16 | Ranking the games, I'd say: 2,3,4,1,shattered memories, Downpour, homecoming, origins
And for the soundtracks: 4,2,3,1,origins,shattered memories, Downpour, then homecoming is easily the worst.
Lustmord makes some stuff that could fit in the silent hill universe too. Maybe some later ulver too. | TheSpaceMan
09.17.16 | Silent Hill 2 is an amazing game, first one is good too. I've always been more of a Resident Evil fanboy for whatever reason but 2 is up there with the best RE has to offer | Gyromania
09.17.16 | I too really enjoyed the room, but 2 and 3 are the best. Shame how far the series has sunk since the room. | Brabiz
09.17.16 | Downpour is without a doubt my least favorite. The soundtrack wasn't too bad though, despite being different, and having a theme song by Korn | ConcubinaryCode
09.17.16 | Downpour had a nice layout of the town though with some actual survival elements though. The puzzles were a decent callback to the earlier games too and I especially loved the area in the auditorium. The monster design was a damn shame though as was the story and the character plots and motivations. I hated everything about origins. It was so short and at the same time felt so padded while basically just fellating the original games. | Brabiz
09.17.16 | The monster designs pretty much ruined the whole game, and the story was essentially origins. Not even 2, it was pretty much Origins level. I also really hated the Otherworld segments. Yeah just run away from a fucking orb |
