Yay good films. |
Drifter
09.29.16 | The Pianist is my favorite movie so... that. It won Adrien Brody an Oscar for best actor and was the youngest (and still is) to ever do so |
Typhoon24
09.29.16 | all are good
check out sympathy for mr vengeance |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | That one sounds intense.
I'll keep both of those on my radar. If you couldn't tell I don't mind any wacky sort of films or movies that have an odd/interesting twist to them. |
ScuroFantasma
09.29.16 | Just saw Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels last night. Great movie. |
Trebor.
09.29.16 | Synecdoche is like my third favorite movie |

09.29.16 | Yo mah Dude, give Brand Upon the Brain! a shot
And Cul-de-Sac, that's a pretty wild one too, Donald Pleasance being a goofball and shit |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | I was probably gonna be watching There Will Be Blood next actually. Either that or a comedy. I like to balance out what I watch. |
Typhoon24
09.29.16 | re sympathy for mr vengeance, it is the quirkiest yet realest brutal korean movie ever (lol)

Shadowmire
09.29.16 | yea watch mr vengeance, oldboy and lady vengeance |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | It's very underrated and not really well known. Probably one of the better superhero movies out there. |
zaruyache
09.29.16 | did you ever watch Adaptation? It's sort-of linked to Being John Malkovich which makes it even better. |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | I have yet to see it, but it's definitely at the top of my list. |
porcupinetheater
09.29.16 | Korean film has been incredible in the 21st Century. Kim Ki-Duk and Lee Chang-Dong don't get as much mention as Park, Kim Ji-Woon, or Bong Joon-Ho, but I think they're probably the best of the lot. 3-Iron and Poetry are magnificent |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | I'll keep those in mind, thanks. |
theacademy
09.29.16 | they are films, not movies |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | I didn't plan on watching them, thought you'd feel better about it. |

09.29.16 | "Korean film has been incredible in the 21st Century."
YES
probably the best movie nation during the 00s. a lot of amazing films in such a short time. |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | Even if I did I think you'd still be condescending.
@RikRoach got any good recs I could look at? |
theacademy
09.29.16 | did u guys see sully yet |
Rik VII
09.29.16 | "@RikRoach got any good recs I could look at?"
People mentioned Oldboy (2003), check that one out. It's a force of nature and one of the most crushing movies of all time. Then again, you seem to have liked Snowpiercer, which is a movie by a Korean director, Bong Joon-ho. Check out Memories of Murder by him, that one is pure candy regarding cinematography. |
smaugman
09.29.16 | needs more movies pre 2000 |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | I've seen older movies, trying to catch up on more recent ones. |
porcupinetheater
09.29.16 | needs more Czech New Wave
but then so do you and I and everyone else on planet Earth because there is never enough |
MarsKid
09.29.16 | Never even heard of that to be honest. |
TheSpaceMan
09.29.16 | anyone ever seen Pi? saw that one recently, really good for a low budget movie. trippy concept even if the acting was poor in places |
Rik VII
09.29.16 | Wasn't impressed by Pi. I watched it because I liked most of Aronofsky's movies, but it felt like it was attempting a disturbing and mind-blowing atmosphere like Eraserhead and the likes without ever being really convincing at it. It's cool and special and stuff, but it just screams "isn't this fucked up?" until it starts getting annoying. |
TheSpaceMan
09.29.16 | disagree i thought it was one of his better movies once you give it the benefit of being his first. not a be-all-end-all movie or anything but impressive imo
but opinions |
Rik VII
09.29.16 | I do agree that it's quite an impressive debut, but that doesn't make it a better film in itself. Also, there are much more impressive debuts imo, e.g. Following (by Nolan) and the aforementioned Eraserhead (by Lynch). |
TheSpaceMan
09.29.16 | both of those are fantastic yea idk I'd say pi's just as good maybe a bit weaker but not by much I was just in the right mood goin in perhaps, i was high as fuck and the movie was recommended to me cause I started playing Go and a friend said she found the game through the movie |
TheSpaceMan
09.29.16 | youre right though, being a debut isnt a true excuse critique wise but idk its noobiness helped elevate it more if that makes any sense, there are a ton of faults with it but it almost helps the novelty |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | Just finished watching Amélie with some friends. It was really enjoyable and had a nice quirkiness to it. |
rapideyemovement
09.30.16 | Mulholland Drive. |
Shadowmire
09.30.16 | agreed |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | Seconded, it's high on my list. |
TheSpaceMan
09.30.16 | yup |
Typhoon24
09.30.16 | mulholland drive tickled me the wrong way at parts. must be why i ended up liking it |
AmericanFlagAsh
09.30.16 | 8 is so good |
adr
09.30.16 | most overrated Charlie Kaufman movie actually |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | Jim Carey is great in dramatic roles. That and The Truman Show are good enough evidence to that. |
Rik VII
09.30.16 | Eternal Sunshine is the best Kaufman by far, and it isn't even a Kaufman, it's a Gondry for the most part. |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | Best Kaufman is Synecdoche tho. |
Rik VII
09.30.16 | Synecdoche is cool but kinda incoherent. |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | It's got a lot of different interpretations to it. The basic narrative itself is pretty straightforward but the possible meanings underneath can be a bit messy. I personally love it and all the separate paths. |
Mad.
09.30.16 | 9 is the best film of all time |
Rik VII
09.30.16 | Yeah, I get what it aims at, but it didn't really work for me. It's got that feeling that it just doesn't know where it wants to go. I get that it's what Kaufman was aiming for because the protagonist himself doesn't know where to go either, but it made the whole movie very tedious to watch. You know, Eternal Sunshine really made me feel melancholic and thoughtful, and I always thought that it's what Synecdoche was aiming at, but not really succeeding in the same way, at least regarding myself.
I also always thought the characters in Eternal Sunshine are way more lively. Also, Gondry is just a more talented director than Jonze and Kaufman (nothing against those two, but Gondry is just really, really good). |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | Damn right fam @Mad |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | It's meant to seem disorderly at parts as Caden's crisis becomes increasingly out of control. He tries very hard to make sense of his existence and what to do, to the point where the struggle consumes him, and real life is blurred. |
Rik VII
09.30.16 | yeah, like I said, I got that, but still
On a totally different note: have you seen Pan's Labyrinth? |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | I haven't, I definitely need to though. |
Rik VII
09.30.16 | Okay, good to know it's already on your list :) |
MarsKid
09.30.16 | I've got plenty on my radar before I get around to other recommendations. That one is something I've been meaning to see for a while, many people have directed me to it. |
Mad.
10.01.16 | Watch Magnolia if you haven't already |
MarsKid
10.01.16 | I need to at some point, gotta get through all those PTA films. |

theacademy
10.02.16 | so it was worth the price of admission? |
theacademy
10.02.16 | it looks like a fake controversy... its like, tonally, as if landing the plane safely and saving all those people was a fucking tragedy instead of an act of heroism |
MarsKid
10.02.16 | Haven't been able to see it yet. There's only one theater by my college and they only have ~4 rooms I think, none of them showing it. |
theacademy
10.02.16 | what the hell |
MarsKid
10.02.16 | It's an old-time one so it doesn't have much room. They play a lot of older films/have events for 'college classics' or whatever. |
theacademy
10.04.16 | u see it yet? i maybe might see it tomoro |
