| Favorite Track From Various Black Metal Subgenres
I've always felt that Black Metal is one of the most varied sub-genres of Metal, so I decided to try to find my favorite tracks from the various subgenres of Black Metal that I listen to. There are undoubtedly going to be at least a few more subgenres that I don't listen to much that I haven't listed, but I'd be more than willing to take recs. I expect at least some people to have some qualms with at least a couple of the classifications/bands I've included as well, but oh well. You can't please everyone. | 1 | | Dissection The Somberlain
Black Horizons (Meloblack)
The main guitar riff heard in the intro, the riff that picks up a bit of steam at 1:50 into the track, the acoustic bit at 4:05 that leads into the melodic riff that leads into the nice solo, that Power Metal scream by Dan Swano at 5:33. 10/10 track.

Lost Horizons of Wisdom (Atmospheric Black Metal)
Starts with a wonderful synth intro that leads into more traditional Burzum-esque Black Metal riffs/vocals. Synths can continue to be heard in the background amongst the riffs, but it REALLY starts to pick up steam at around the 4:39 mark with the increase in tempo, which then hits the climactic riff of the entire track at 5:04. It's pretty rare in a genre like this that a riff makes me headbang, but this main riff is it.

Echoes of Battle (Epic Black Metal)
One of the most epic tracks I've ever heard. Starts with that victorious synth and pounding drums, which leads into the intro BM riff that's followed by Shield Anvil's incredible vocals. Sounds of clashing swords and shields can be heard throughout, and the synth horns build up nicely to more chorus-like/bombastic tremolo riffs numerous times throughout. The clean chanted vocals are some of the best chanted vocals I've ever heard, and that main tremolo riff at 6:09 is one of the most glorious things I've ever heard.

Jotunheim (Pagan/Blackened Folk Metal)
This is a track so beautiful and so epic that no amount of words would ever be able to do it justice. It's just something you need to hear and experience for yourself.

The Collapsing Spheres of Time (Symphonic Black Metal)
Starts with a nice, fast riff accompanied by a short little laugh that adds quite a bit to the overall attitude of the track, if that makes any sense. Wonderful orchestral elements in the background, though the majority is made up by some pretty aggressive riffs. Some great vocals on this album too; the vocals are one of my favorite parts.

Dragon of the Continuum (Blackened Death Metal)
Filthy vocals and tremolo riffs throughout. Just a filthy track overall, and I love it.

Percées De Lumière (Post-Black Metal)
Always been a favorite of mine. Those absolutely tortured sounding screams layered on top of the melodic riffs is incredible.

Sterile Seeds (Dissonant BM)
The Icelandic bands have been murdering the scene as of late, and this is the best of the bunch. Really DsO influenced with the dissonance, hellish vocals, unrelenting riffs. The entire album is punishing as hell, and I love it.

Tortured By Solitude (DSBM)
Not really a huge fan of DSBM in most cases, but I've always loved Coldworld. Really like the violin heard in this track, adds a bit of beauty to the desolation.

Chaoskampf (Blackened Doom Metal)
I couldn't have said it any better than user Benc's soundoff:
"A wonderfully crafted album, Usnea's debut seems to have been overlooked by many people, and I feel bad for them. If you're looking for a stellar combination of slow, emotional doom metal and the atmospheric intensity of black metal look no further. The riffs lumber along, chock full of emotion and energy, while the screams and howls of the two vocalists are unleashed with unmatched passion. The production of the album is simply wonderful, allowing every beat of the drums and every note of the guitars to sound crystal clear while maintaining a wall of sound that has the capability to destroy the unprepared. This is certainly the best doom metal album of 2013, and is one of the greatest musical journeys I've ever taken."

Withstand the Fall of Time (Blackened Thrash)
I expect some people will be opposed to this being listed as Blackened Thrash, but to me it's definitely Blackened Thrash, as the riffs are HEAVILY thrash influenced. The riff that starts at 1:58 is also my favorite Immortal riff.
https://youtu.be/3ihVtuw2n0c | 12 | | Immortal Pure Holocaust
Unsilent Storms in the North Abyss (2nd Wave BM)
Yes, Immortal listed twice in a row, in 2 different sub-genres. To me, this track is the very essence of what straight BM is: cold, dark, heavy, and unforgiving.
https://youtu.be/RWVSET2mKhY | 13 | | Celtic Frost To Mega Therion
Circle of the Tyrants (1st Wave/Proto Black Metal)
Riffs so hard. End of story.
https://youtu.be/41PxFzoqULU | 14 | | Alrakis Alpha Eri
M20 (Ambient Black Metal)
Incredibly spacey ambient black metal. Drawn out tremolo riffs, shrieking vocals, incredibly atmospheric ambient bits, production isn't so bad that you can't make anything out.. This is what Ambient Black Metal should sound like.

12.13.16 | needs blacknoise, blackgrind, blackened punk, war metal | Mystletainn
12.13.16 | it's distinctly different from the typical black-death sound but essentially yeah it's just black-death if you break it down. Dissection can also fall under black-death but they're so much different than say Revenge or Blasphemy etc. |
