Instrumentation For Ambient/Electronic Music

I've been really getting into ambient music recently, especially when paired with other electronic music and rock. Stuff like the trip hop greats and Ambient Works Vol. 2 by Aphex Twin in particular. I'm planning on jamming a lot of Eno's solo work soon, and have really enjoyed his collaborations with Robert Fripp. I'm seriously considering trying to write music for the first time, mainly using programming and some kind of synthesizer or keyboard. I know next to nothing about these kinds of things, and would appreciate any kind of direction the good people of sputnik can give. Low and Heroes by David Bowie and Ambient Works Vol. 2 is my favorite kind of ambient so far, and I'd try to start by playing around with those kinds of sounds to eventually get to writing my own original music. Any models of keyboards or synths, online programs, and more ambient music to jam so I can round out my knowledge with this stuff is greatly appreciated, as I'm considering asking for a synthesizer and programming equipment of some kind for a graduation present. Thanks!
