neekafat
02.15.17 | Not gonna lie, actually pretty excited to start getting into some heavier stuff and give it a try. |
Hawks
02.15.17 | Pretty much all great picks. 19 isn't metal though, get Ulver - Bergatt instead. |
Dedes
02.15.17 | That's awesome dude, he gave you some pretty solid rec's really. The bands that got me into extreme metal were basically Nile, Death and Fleshgod Apocalypse. |
Astral Abortis
02.15.17 | 19 isn't even metal.
Most of these are good picks for a beginner but 20, 18, 16 and 13 are all bad choices. |
Astral Abortis
02.15.17 | and no, get Ulver - Nattens Madrigal, not Bergtatt
|
EliteTaste
02.15.17 | tbh don't jam metal |
Hawks
02.15.17 | Bergtatt is just easier to get into, both are essential. |
neekafat
02.15.17 | Yeah he said 19 wasn't metal but that I should check it out anyway because it was important for black metal or something and it would be easy for me to get into |
neekafat
02.15.17 | @king, cool I might have to check them out if I get into it! |
Astral Abortis
02.15.17 | Kveldssanger did nothing for black metal, Ulver overall weren't an important influence on black metal apart from some 2000s bands |
neekafat
02.15.17 | Idk man, maybe he just thought I'd dig it |
Hawks
02.15.17 | Dont check Fleshgod Apocalypse. |
neekafat
02.15.17 | Sounds like a plan haha |
Astral Abortis
02.15.17 | Ulver rule though, don't get me wrong there. Almost all their albums are worth your time. |
Hawks
02.15.17 | Agreed hard. |
porcupinetheater
02.15.17 | Skip Evile as hard as you can
And dig deeper into black metal before you jam Xasthur
Also, everything said about Ulver [∞] |
ScuroFantasma
02.15.17 | These all pretty much rule
"20, 18, 16 and 13 are all bad choices"
16 is pretty cool
|
tempest--
02.15.17 | never heard metal goes straight for dm idk seems kinda stupid to me check judas priest first maybe |
Astral Abortis
02.15.17 | Woods of Ypres is one of my most hated bands ever tbh
And yeah start with Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, Motorhead, etc |
ScuroFantasma
02.15.17 | Really? How come? |
Astral Abortis
02.15.17 | Initially just because of how bad the lyrics were but the music annoyed me after a time too, and I saw people adoring them everywhere and it annoyed me because I'm fickle and hold a grudge and wasted time on them. |
ScuroFantasma
02.15.17 | lol, righteo |
betray
02.15.17 | most of this is sure to just turn you off to metal tbh |
Dedes
02.15.17 | "Dont check Fleshgod Apocalypse."
Never trust a hawk |
DinosaurJones
02.15.17 | Here's the thing: Check them for sure, but remember, it's not a big deal if you're not into it. |
Dedes
02.15.17 | Yeah, also if you haven't heard the huge ones like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Tool, what not. |
Titan
02.15.17 | 'never heard metal goes straight for dm idk seems kinda stupid to me check judas priest first maybe'
agreed hard......lighten it up |
50iL
02.15.17 | Good picks tbf. If you want any more, hmu |
Dedes
02.15.17 | You really do have to ease yourself into more extreme metal, hell even Pantera, Slipknot, maybe the more tame metalcore like Killswitch Engage are good starts. It's mostly just the harsh vocals that turn people off. When I was 14 I thought Cowboys from Hell by Pantera was far too extreme, now look where I am lol. |
Astral Abortis
02.15.17 | Don't tell him to ease in with terrible 90s pop metal. He can ease in the real way with heavy metal and thrash |
Dedes
02.15.17 | Well there's no wrong or right way I suppose, but be honest most people get into metal with these bands. I've grown out of Pantera and Slipknot somewhat but I still love Killswitch Engage. |
RunOfTheMill
02.15.17 | I mean, some good picks here, but this all more or less extreme metal. There are some better ways to ease yourself into the genre lol |
RunOfTheMill
02.15.17 | oh I now realise that's what everyone else has been saying, well have fun anyways :] |
Enzx
02.15.17 | destroyer 666. most metal band ever. |
marf1300
02.15.17 | I have to agree with the other people commenting. Don't jump straight into death and black metal, you probably won't like it. Instead start with hard rock (Deep Purple, Budgie, and Uriah Heep) and heavy metal (Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio). Also, don't be ashamed to check out the gateway genres like metalcore, nu metal, post-grunge, and blackgaze. Of the ones your friend told you to check out, Carcass, Anthrax, and Woods of Ypres will be the most accessible. |
ZippaThaRippa
02.15.17 | Actually no, do whatever the fuck you want. These are cool albums, would be interesting to see how you process them with no frame of reference whatsoever. |
Relinquished
02.15.17 | ^ yea, people end up in interesting roads of taste that way |
magicuba
02.15.17 | I also think this kind of metal is too extreme for a beginner. Listening to 1 album for each metal genre would much more productive to understand what you can get into more easily ( and that you like more) instead of having mostly 20 albums of death metal and black metak. I love metal but I don't really like death metal in particular and this list would have been a huge turn off for me as a noob |
Shemson
02.15.17 | If you want essential extreme metal, which is seems you do, never forget-
Decapitated-Winds Of Creation
Cryptopsy-None So Vile
Opeth-Ghost Reveries |
wham49
02.15.17 | maybe essential to the death metal comm., the only ones I think are essential to the whole metal genre are 12 and 14 |
bloc
02.15.17 | I keep pronouncing your name as niggafat |
neekafat
02.15.17 | Y'all are crazy if you think I haven't listened to metal before, have you checked my ratings? This is me trying to get into extreme metal, not heavy metal. Already done that |
DinosaurJones
02.15.17 | WHOA, bloc.
...I heard what you said. |
Gameofmetal
02.15.17 | Im with zippa and relinquished on this one even though it might just ruin metal for you lol |
Gameofmetal
02.15.17 | O then do whatever you want actually |
tempest--
02.15.17 | ok nowhere does it say youve heard metal and this is for extreme metal so you fucked up but in any case check possessed - seven churches |
neekafat
02.15.17 | Didn't think I needed to spell it out but ok |
Deathconscious
02.15.17 | Mostly great recommendations but
1. If youre gonna jam a Cannibal Corpse album it should be The Bleeding, or at least Tomb of the Mutilated
2. Evile is pleb revival thrash
3. Wrong Sepultura album, jam one of their first 4
4. Im sure its already been mentioned but im too lazy to read the thread, 19 isnt metal at all. Listen to their Bergtatt album instead. |
adr
02.15.17 | check Grotesque also |
neekafat
02.15.17 | Thanks mates |
zaruyache
02.15.17 | Amon Amarth - With Oden On Our Side - accessible melodeath
Woods of Desolation - Torn Beyond Reason - blackgaze
megadeth - rust in peace - crap album but it's a good intro to thrash
|
neekafat
02.15.17 | I like the small amount of Megadeth I've heard |
Deathconscious
02.15.17 | "crap album"
The fuck u said mate.
Im not even a huge Megadeth fan but that album is great. |
Dedes
02.15.17 | Wow, never seen someone shit on Rust in Peace, damn. |
KingWeirdo616
02.15.17 | Hello all! Friend of neekafat who recommended the albums here. I've been friends with him since high school, I've been trying my best to get him into more extreme metal ever since. So this list is a combination of personal taste and accessibility.
He asked for essential extreme metal albums, so naturally I couldn't put just 5 in a list. So instead of finding the most niche metal, I went for albums that I thought were better to go with straight forward genres than go for something like blackened shoegaze.
|
emester
02.15.17 | Heidevolk is scrotum cancer please for your own sake dont listen to them |
Rik VII
02.15.17 | 16 is a great choice, you might even start with that one. |
neekafat
02.15.17 | @King I'm excited to start checking them!
@Rik I was thinking about it, sounded really my style |
Joeman82
02.15.17 | Coming from quite the metal novice myself, I'd recommend adding Deafheaven - Sunbather |
Dedes
02.15.17 | I always preferred New Bermuda, mostly because Sunbather gets mildly monotonous. To be honest Sunbather was one of my first black metal albums even if it's vaguely black metal, so its got some pretty hardcore nostalgia value. |
smaugman
02.15.17 | cannibal corpse lmao |
Dedes
02.15.17 | Cannibal Corpse is overrated but they were a big band in sparking death metal, you really can't deny that. Or at least propelling death metal to the spotlight. |
Papa Universe
02.15.17 | No Emperor? |
Sevengill
02.15.17 | Emperor [2] but otherwise a excellent assortment. |
voltairesangryglove
02.15.17 | turn back before it's too late. it's impossible to be a metalhead and have girls want to bang you. |
Dedes
02.15.17 | I've had a girlfriend for 11 months so that kind of disproves your statement. I mean, unless you're talking about the basement dwelling dweebs who masturbate to the singer of Arch Enemy. |
Snake.
02.15.17 | skip the metal phase it's not worth it |
Dedes
02.15.17 | Why do you say that exactly?
|
Snake.
02.15.17 | because there are much more worthwhile genres |
Dedes
02.15.17 | I don't know man, let him explore. There's good music from any genre and it's all a matter of what clicks with you. I mean yeah there's some shit dime a dozen metal bands but all music has "those" bands. |
Sevengill
02.15.17 | "the basement dwelling dweebs who masturbate to the singer of Arch Enemy."
that was like, at least 30% of the entire 70,000 Tons audience |
Dedes
02.15.17 | I didn't even know what that was until I looked it up, damn it has some amazing lineups. |
Nazzadan
02.15.17 | I'd like to go to at least one to see how it is |
zaruyache
02.15.17 | "never seen someone shit on Rust in Peace"
o I can't stand dave's stupid voice and stupid lyrics. There are like 3 ridic tracks on that album but the rest are nowhere near as good. |
Dedes
02.15.17 | Yeah I don't like his voice either it's fucking nasally lol, but honestly the riffs and solos are fucking amazing. Enough to make it a solid album. |
neekafat
02.16.17 | I gotta listen to that one honestly |
bloc
02.16.17 | Despite it being one of the best albums ever and super popular and all that shit, I never thought RIP was a good entry point for thrash/metal. Dave's voice is a bit of an acquired taste and the super technicality of the album isn't too indicative of traditional thrash. Metallica is a much better starting point. |
neekafat
02.16.17 | Already listened to all of Metallica lol |
