| Aussie Bands With A Future
These are the Australian bands that are making their way into the music scene, some have been there a while, others are only just arriving. Either way, I think these are the bands we'll be hearing about for a long time to come. | 1 | Pendulum
They made Drum'n'Bass big news. They're now based in an entirely different country. If thats not success I don't know what is. | 2 | The Butterfly Effect
I doubt they'll ever have a number 1 hit, or even a top 20/40, but they're going to be a continuous figure in the rock scene and they've already had singles in other countries. Can't wait for their new album. | 3 | Karnivool
Prog Rock. They will never be as successful as Ian Kennedy's (the lead singer) other band, Birds of Tokyo, but I feel the critics will prefer them. And so will I. | 4 | Birds of Tokyo
Their second album, Universes, is proving to be extremely successful in Australia. They've got potential to be a success elsewhere in the world too. | 5 | Cog
Australia's response to Tool and Opeth. | 6 | Gotye
Any band (even if its a one-man band) that has a remix album of their first album is destined for big things. Good thing Gotye is nothing like Linkin Park, aye? | 7 | Gyroscope
Australia's response to all those American radio rock bands. Radio rock with an aussie accent. | 8 | PNAU
Giving you dance with a dash of herbs and spices. They're a semi-successful band. Everyone (in Australia at least) seems to know them, but no-one really admits to listening to them. | 9 | The Presets
They're a true dance group (not hip hop or pop) that are getting massive hits. Should be interesting. | 10 | Faker
Annoying as all hell, but admittedly getting enormous hits. | 11 | Operator Please
Another excruciatingly annoying band that are too successful for their own good (a teenage band, lets hope they fade away instead of getting better in the limelight like Silverchair) | 12 | British India
Garage rock that are proving themselves with their second album in only just over a year. They're off to tour Europe later this year. | 13 | Midnight Juggernauts
Don't really know much about these guys, but I hear their name alot. Can only be for one reason. | 14 | The Vines
Already well acclaimed on the world stage, although I'm not a fan. | 15 | Hilltop Hoods
Finally, Australia has a real HipHop/Rap group to boast about. | 16 | Kisschasy
As if people don't know these guys. Hideously big hit awhile ago. They could be a risky placing on this list, because they have the potential to just disappear as quickly as their fame appeared. | 17 | Cut Copy
These guys get talked about alot now, have a lot of potential to hit Europe. Not sure about America. | 18 | Missy Higgins
Old news to Aussies, but new to America. | |
ninjuice
08.30.08 | I saw Higgins on Leno recently, sounded fairly good. Haven't heard pretty much all the rest. | McP3000
08.30.08 | list title made me lol hard | rasputin
08.30.08 | Some of these have no future. | Captain North
08.30.08 | yeah, the title is pretty gay isnt it? | AtavanHalen
08.30.08 | 1 being based in a different country means nothing.
2 already had a top ten hit, A Slow Descent.
3 has sold out more shows than BoT on the account of being around for longer
4 are fantastic, as are 5
Your reasoning for 6 is ridiculous, but Wally is fantastic.
You have completely misinterpreted 7.
8 has plenty of fans that will admit, don't know where you're coming from.
Dance music is very popular in Australai, why is that surprising for 9 to have hits?
10 have some great
11 shouldn't be in the list if you don't like then. They're better than you, anyway.
12 are horrible
You're an idiot for not knowing 13
14 are fantastic
There's more to Aussie hip-hop than 15
16 have stood the test of time, and will continue to do so.
I agree about 17
18 will most likely succeed overseas. | rasputin
08.30.08 | haha Operator Please and Kisschasy are pretty shithouse | unretrovertigofied
08.30.08 | A big FUCK NO to #11
sheeeeit | unretrovertigofied
08.30.08 | If Cog ever release a song that stands up to an Opeth song i'll eat my fucking hat. Apart from that i quite like 'em.
It seems like Aussie bands are starting to make a stamp of authority on Sputnik, but hear hear, i'm not sold on them just yet.
And give me Concord Dawn over Pendulum, mainly because Morning Light is the best D'n'B anthem going around. Oh, and i'm a Kiwi ;) | unretrovertigofied
08.30.08 | Bit harsh on Cog there, i just don't see the need to compare them to Tool or Opeth. They have their own sound, and they're pretty damn good at what they do.
| billy33
08.30.08 | good list
1. I found about them while i was in england for cricket, theyre quite good.
2. My favourite band ever, their new album is going to be huge. Could listen to them forever.
3/4. Dude the lead singer for 'vool n BoT is Ian KENNY not kennedy. Both great bands, will never get sick of either.
5. Dunno about opeth but yeah freakin awesome band, another band i will never get sick of.
6. 'vools cover of the only way is orgasmic, like drawing blood is great.
7. Snakeskin is awesome.
10. Hurricane is a good song, but their other stuff is annoying as.
11. They shouldn't even be on this list, bloody discraceful band.
15. Check out The Herd, way, way better than Hilltop Hoods.
A couple that should be on here: Mammal, Sleep Parade and Trial Kennedy. | billy33
08.30.08 | speaking of Mammal
got their new album in the mail today.
its fuken awesome. a must buy for any fans of good hard rock | BallsToTheWall
08.30.08 | These Aussie lists keep on failing without mentioning Be'Lakor. Virgin Black, Alchemist, Daysend but most importantly, Destroyer 666 are my prospects. Possibly Sleepmakeswaves and Dead Open Letter who sound like Opeth, but obviously not as great. | billy33
08.30.08 | isnt it dead letter opener not dead open letter, but yeah probs not getting mentioned cos theyre sorta different scenes. | StreetlightRock
08.30.08 | Of this list, Cut Copy and Missy Higgins are pretty much the only ones that fit the list title. Pendulum's second album was rubbish and the entire dance community agreed with that. Unless they put Gods on voice on their next CD, they're going to disappear faster than water down a drain pipe. Pretty much ALL the metal/rock bands wont go anywhere, The Presets won't cut it on the world stage, as awesome as they are, PNAU are average beyond belief, the Juggers already toured with Justice and went nowhere because of it, and the Vines don't count. | Jim
08.30.08 | a lot of kinda boring mainstream aussie stuff here
needs mammal and dead letter circus who seriously are on the rise | foreverendeared
08.30.08 | dead letter circus RULE | Captain North
08.31.08 | I was garrentied (my spelling is craptastic) to miss some bands, and I've never really listened to or heard much about most of the others mention (apart from Dead Letter CIRCUS who I completely forgot about). And yeah, I should have known the Kenny thing, I have his name down on a list on itunes. ah well.
And yes, I agree Operator Please is crap, but I gotta admit I think they're going to stick around. What I meant by comparing Cog to Tool and Opeth is that they're very much prog and they've completely made their own sound within the genre.
Yes, Dance is big in Aus, but I rarely see them in the top whatever...and...I didn't realise A Slow Descent was a hit. O.o | ratcfc
12.14.08 | Ooh La La deserve a mention | porkchop182
01.02.09 | 9, 11, 15 and 16 are probably the ones I see going the furthest.
The Presets have become one of top Aussie acts at the moment.
Operator please are very young and show real potential.
Hilltop Hoods seem to know what people like and I respect them even though I usually cant stand that sort of music.
Kisschasy need a real solid next album and they will definitely become one of Australia's most promising groups imo. | cockorocko
06.04.09 | Needs more MAMMAL and NO Operator Please! | thebhoy
06.04.09 | unless they all die, they have futures, this is correct. | foreverendeared
06.04.09 | where's Dead Letter Circus? | willfellmarsy
06.04.09 | cog is awful | thebhoy
06.04.09 | list needs more AC/DC | xNintendoCorex
09.21.09 | ^^ suck a lemon
pendulum are pretty much the only noteworthy band on this list |
