A Buck-Tick Analysis Vol.1: My Funny Valentine

Alright, so I decided to make an analysis for some Buck Tick songs to: a) Give the group more popularity as they are quickly rising to be my favorite band. b) Have a chance to analyze Sakurai's lyrics profoundly. He writes very dark lyrics which I'm a sucker for. I do plan on making this a series and I thought this was a good way to begin. The format I follow is: stanza(s) and a paragraph decomposing it. Anyway, here is the analysis of My Funny Valentine (one of the first songs of theirs that really clicked with me). Enjoy! Here are the translated lyrics: https://sites.google.com/site/lyricsyndrome/lyrics/buck-tick/my-funny-valentine and here is the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOL1LO1YARY

I'm gone mad in a scorching haze
Singing in dejection, Lady
At the end, I’ll give you a rhapsody covered in ashes

This stanza sets the stage for the story. Our narrator has lost it and he's truly angry and hateful ("scorching hazes" means fire which is often affiliated with anger). Another character, evidently a woman, cries (sings) against this attitude. There is a key point here though; it's in the "dejection". Dejection, by definition, means in low spirits. These low spirits could be caused because of tiredness, repetitiveness. This reveals the narrator gets angry very often. However, perhaps the most crucial point comes in the last line. You see, a rhapsody is an intense expression of feeling, and, obviously, ashes are what's left after a fire. Therefore, it can be concluded the narrator releases his anger with an ecstatic expression of feeling. Personally, I think this refers to domestic abuse. That would tie in with the point that said the woman was tired and depressed.

"Ashes" could also signify bruises because of their similar color.

Ah Valentine, look how much I burn for you
Beloved Valentine, you spill my living blood

The first line goes back to the point on the fire. The narrator is blaming the woman for causing his anger. The second line has a similar scenario, as the narrator blames the woman for "spilling his living blood". This could signify the man harms himself as well. Curiously enough, it seems to me the lines are in the connotation of a tragic love, as if the narrator truly depends on the woman.

The you of my dreams was just an illusion
Dance, Lady, like you don't care
While I lust for the pomegranate at the last freak show

This is a tough one to decipher. The only straight forward line is the first one. Our narrator's expectations haven't been met with his partner. It seems as though the other two lines are a whole new allegory on their own. The dancing refers to ignorance here; our narrator sees the lady as ignorant of his struggles. His struggles are those of wanting a better life, a new chance. This can be concluded because the pomegranate he lusts for means, in Greek mythology: life, marriage, and rebirth. He wants a renaissance in the romantic and personal aspects of his life.

Ah Valentine, sound of your heels passing me by
Yes Valentine, you cut my heart till I go crazy

The "heels passing by" simply refer to the woman walking away from the relationship. Based on the context clues from before, it can be concluded she ended the relationship because of the obvious altercations both sides constantly have. The second line says her partner's feelings feel torn and tattered. It's is pretty ironic, considering he is the one doing the domestic abuse.

I'd let the sun kill me, for all I care
Melting away my flesh and blood
I can’t help but be afraid
In the mirror, I see Destiny

The narrator wishes to die, but is afraid of death itself. The sun here signifies his eternal anger (as the sun is literally a huge ball of fire, basically) and "Destiny" actually refers to himself. He fears he will be born into the same situation, being himself all over again, trapped in his own hell.

Ah, you left me, cruel Valentine
Beautiful Valentine, I'll make you sleep again

Tonight, I want to burn out, turn to ash, just the two of us
I loathe it all, it doesn't matter
Even you, even me

These two stanzas are also very clear. The woman evidently left the narrator and he's looking for revenge. The fact that he'll make her "sleep again" could signify passing out. It does seem this time will be a permanent one, though. The second stanza says he wants to stop carrying the burden of his anger and will commit suicide after killing the woman.

My sweet, dying Valentine
I want you Valentine
Goodbye, beloved Valetine
My funny Valentine

Tonight, I want to burn out, turn to ash, just the two of us
I loathe it all, it doesn't matter
Even you, even me
Tonight, I want to crumble and fall, turn to ash,
Just the two of us
I thought it was all betrayal
Even you, even me

The narrator convinces himself of what he'll do and reaffirms his position. Strangely, the last two lines do offer some information. He secretly felt guilty for treating the woman as such and feels guilty for conceding to his anger. That is now nonexistent though, as he no longer thinks that.

My sweet, dying Valentine
I want you Valentine
Goodbye, beloved Valetine
My funny Valentine
My sweet, dying Valentine
I want you Valentine
Goodnight, beloved Valetine
My funny Valentine

The narrator kills himself and the woman and says his last goodbyes. The desire of the woman shown clearly proves how the man thought he needed the woman to survive. It's very ironic to me how she was the only way he was managing to live but at the same time the incentive for his madness and hate.

Alas, that's it for now. Again, very dark lyrics considering the funky and playful nature of the song. I had TONS of fun doing this as the lyrics contain enough intrigue to truly hook you but always have subtleties hidden within them.
Until next time!
