1Mary Lattimore
Collected Pieces

“Wawa By The Ocean” - https://marylattimoreharpist.bandcamp.com/track/wawa-by-the-ocean

While I found it to be a incredibly piece to play in the background, I wasn’t as “holy shit” amazed by ‘At The Damn’ like what seemed to be the majority of the people who started hyping it. However, there’s something about “Wawa By The Ocean” that enchants me. There’s something magical, something heavenly in this track that I didn’t feel, or at least to this awe-inspiring degree, on ‘At The Dam’. The layers continue to build up throughout the track, and enrapture me more and more. I may be late, but I think I’m ready to hop on the Mary Lattimore hype train.

‘Collected Pieces’ is out April 14

Witch Prophet - “Listen (feat. Lucas Silveira)”: https://witchprophet.bandcamp.com/track/listen-ft-lucas-silveira-the-cliks

A lovely neo-soul track whose slow and steady pace enhances not only Ayo Leilani’s composed vocal performance, but the lyrics that have to do with keeping one’s composure and avoiding doing something stupid (the song is also in promotion of a campaign that focuses on mental health and suicide awareness). It’s an instrumentally basic song, but it’s genuine message and self-help purpose makes it fit.

‘Golden Octave’ is out sometime later this year

Nan Kolè - “Bayefal”: https://youtu.be/9wTiVyQXYuI

The award for “oddest vocal sample in a dance track” this time around has to go to this cut. While I was taken off guard by it at first, it has this charm to it that won me over quickly. Besides, the production surrounding it is undeniably festive, especially within the percussion department.

‘Malumz’ is out April 14
4Gorillaz
Humanz

“Ascension”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBA0PUQCvIA

Definitely my favorite of all the Gorillaz tracks to come out. Yes, it does suffer from a similar situation that many of the news songs, it doesn’t sound as fleshed out as it could’ve been, but Vince brings so much goddamn energy and quotables that I’m just happy we got a banger this good in the first place. Those last four bars are probably some of my favorite moments in music this year right now.

“Saturnz Barz”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qJp6xlKEug

Second fave. I’m still not 100% sold on Popcaan’s autotuned vocal style, it has it’s charms but it definitely not the highlight of the song. That would have to be the beat, which is just a wonderfully spooky production. Considering half of the songs that have come out for ‘Humanz’ have left me underwhelmed, my expectation of the overall album isn’t the best. But if a couple more jams on the level of these two tracks come out of it, I’d be fine with it.

‘Humanz’ is out 4/28
5PWR BTTM
Pageant

“Answer My Text”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTTNu3wkXM8

PWR BTTM continue to prove themselves to be my new favorite band, but in a completely different way than with “Big Beautiful Day”. While that track was satisfying in it’s LGBT empowerment message and punk spirit, “Answer My Text” is a much sillier track with charming levels of relatability and a hell of a chorus. This might be my most anticipated rock record rn!

‘Paegant’ is out May 12!!!
6The Janitors
Horn Ur Marken

“Trojan Horse”: https://thejanitors.bandcamp.com/track/trojan-ghost

Damn, what a hellscape of psych rock track. The vocals and guitars have the perfect amount of sinister and sour to them that makes the band’s bandcamp description hit the bill: “Peddlers of heavy drones and fuzzed nightmares since 2004”

‘Horn Ur Marken’ is out April 24
7Clarence Clarity
No Now

Rina Sawayama - “Cyber Stockholm Syndrome”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rLFDMF-e6Q

ATTENTION ALL FANS OF CLARENCE CLARITY. Make sure to keep an eye on Rina Sawayama. Not only is he producing alot of her upcoming record, but based on this, the beats he’s bringing are bound to be top notch (and hold over until that new album comes along). This track is an absolute banger; a mid-late ‘90s R&B jam from the future. I love the lyrics as well; the concept of being someone’s dream girl, but only through the digital world is a modern concept that is half fascinating and half kiiinda sad. But I dig that combo!
8Stevens / Dessner / Muhly / McAlister
Planetarium

“Saturn”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49Jwh5CC_J4

Is my complete fanboyism of Sufjan Stevens the reason I love this song? Maybe. However, this track is a callback to my favorite era of Sufjan’s music, so I was bound to love this track. Even as much as I enjoy this song, I still feel this’ll sound even greater in the context of the record.

‘Planetarium’ is out June 9!
9Los Angeles Police Department
Los Angeles Police Department II

“Grown”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5zfbNiuOyk

This is a reeeally solid ballad right here. The vocals, while I could see them not appealing to everyone, have an innocent, awkward sentiment to them that I really feel accentuates the lyrics. There’s just something so candid, so lovable about this song.

‘Los Angeles Police Department’ is out April 28

Rocket

“Bobby”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPuxLpVus-k

If I’m going to be honest, the fiddle and the female vocals on this track basically make this song. These two elements just add so much personality to a track that already has a great tune at the core.

‘Rocket’ is out May 19

Techo Deluxe

“Seems 2 Be”: https://soundcloud.com/bansheebeatmusic/seems_2_be

Much like the rest of ‘Techo Deluxe’, I just have so much damn fun listening to this song. It’s hyperactive, cutesy, sparkly, overblown, and anime af in the best way possible. Plus props to Dylan for coming through with some of the best sound design I’ve heard on an electronic release this year.

‘Techo Deluxe’ is out now!!!!! Go listen to it!!!!!!
12Dream Wife
EP01

“Somebody”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ov_uABrg5U

This is probably the tightest rock song I’ve heard in awhile. The guitar work, the programmed drums, the prominent bass, everything fits perfectly in way that would usually turn me away, but all these element are pulled off so well.
13Tops
Sugar at the Gate

“Petals”: https://youtu.be/vJ7jg9ECWXE

This song probably has one of the best grooves on an indie song this year. “Petals” is just an incredibly fun track that carries the perfect amount of sweetness and slickness. That chorus is just the darnedest thing (this is not sarcastic I swear).

‘Sugar At The Gate’ is out June 2!
14First Aid Kit
Stay Gold

“You are the Problem Here”: https://youtu.be/exsaCN4c5dc

Holy Shit. The lyrics on this track hold nothing back. The unbridled anger felt in delivery makes the theme, the incredibly sensitive theme, of sexual assault cut. Deep. When she sings “I hope you fucking suffer”, there’s real hatred behind those words. Of all the songs on this list, this will probably evoke the strongest feelings out of all of them.
15Her
Her Tape #2

“Swim”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfoniwgS8XM

I really enjoyed this band’s non-lame fusion of indie pop and R&B on their debut EP. But it looks like based off this single the group is headed more bombastic territory than the comparatively subtle debut . But they pull off this switch well, the chorus really pops with a really sweet synthline. And did I mention the awesome sax solo? The vocals are a bit messy on the 2nd verse, but overall I have a feeling Her won’t disappoint.

Her Tape #2 is out now!

Equiknoxx Music - “Fly Away (feat. Alozade & Gavsborg)”: https://soundcloud.com/swingting/equiknoxx-music-fly-away-ft-alozade-gavsborg

Question: Who wants to hear some dancehall?

Okay, follow up question: Who wants to hear some GOOD dancehall?

“Fly Away” is a hell of a dancehall banger that balances it’s bumping beat with it’s interesting textures that you’d never get from Drake (lol).
17Alt-J
Relaxer

“In Cold Blood”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkuveBPhkII

It is true, I absolutely loved “3WW” for how subtle and quiet was. However, I’m not the kind of guy that’ll turn down an indie banger like this. There’s a superb heaviness and a bit of tension that really makes this track a hell of a barn burner with endless catchy bits. Those horns just make things that much greater. Alt-J is going to come through with an AOTY contender, I’m telling y’all.

‘Relaxer’ is out June 2!! (a week earlier now!!!)
18King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
Murder Of The Universe

Han-Tyumi & The Murder Of The Universe :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zUPTPlkqDg

This is technically multiple tracks, but whatever. I am now more hyped for this record than I ever was for their previous. King Gizzard go back to their heavier stylings, but the more notable thing about this set of tracks (the final of the three "chapters" that this new album will be made up of), is the tale told from the prespecitve of a robot who...idk man I can barely describe. There's a weird narrative to these tracks, but Gizzard bring the energy and the heaviness in case you're not as interested.

'Murder of the Universe' is out June 23!!

Harry Styles - “Sign Of The Times”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0GKGpObgPY

I know, I know. Believe me, I didn’t see this coming either. It may just be that I didn’t have crazy high expectations, but I was really impressed by this track. Of course it’s a bit on the sanitized side of “rock”, the guitars could really be moved up in the mix, but that Bowie-esque hook just hits something that I’m not quite sure I can define. There’s just something that feels great about the climax of this track. I never thought I’d see a power ballad like this come out of one of pop music’s most infamous characters, one so good!

"The Interview": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zBX1btFroo

"Album's destined to be overlooked on Sputnik, but from what I'm hearing here it would be up many people's alleys. Altman's vocals and guitar have that wonderful 90s indie feel. Didn't know this was coming out so soon, but after hearing this I'm more than excited."

‘Freightliner’ is out April 28!
