Favorites (But Remember, I'm Old)

These are the bands I usually list as my 25 favorite bands (although there are about a zillion more that I love), and my favorite song for each. (Songs are favorites today, though, tomorrow they'll probably be different). Some are predictable favorite songs, others are a bit off the beaten track.
1Jethro Tull
Heavy Horses

Heavy Horses

To the best of my knowledge, the only rock love song to the British plough horse ever recorded. I love most of Tull's different musical stages, but their rustic/Elizabethan period is my favorite.
2The Who
Who's Next

Behind Blue Eyes

Definitely played to death, but if you can listen with fresh ears, a truly great song, both musically and lyrically. Runner-up is probably "Amazing Journey.
3Pink Floyd
Wish You Were Here

Welcome to the Machine

I consider this the greatest album of all time. The song "Wish You Were Here" is a close second to this one.
4Yes
Going for the One

Turn of the Century

Yes's version of a love song. Probably an unusual choice as a favorite for Yes songs. Runner-up would be "And You and I".
5The Good Rats
Tasty

The Songwriter

Maybe the most autobiographical song Peppi Marchello ever wrote. I still can't believe the man is gone, but at least the music lives on.
6Procol Harum
A Salty Dog

A Salty Dog

Procol's take on Rime of the Ancient Mariner. My favorite band for musical epic fantasies.
7Bruce Springsteen
Born to Run

Thunder Road

From the good old days, when most of Bruce's songs were about getting the hell of out Jersey.
8Joni Mitchell
Clouds

Chelsea Morning

My favorite folk singer, her voice is incredibly beautiful here.
9The Cars
The Cars

Just What I Needed

It's all about the synthesizer on this one for me.
10The Police
Zenyatta Mondatta

Don't Stand So Close to Me

Much better than the updated version they did later in their career. An ode to pervy teachers.
11Blondie
Parallel Lines

11:59

An unusual choice, short, but right on. Runner-up would probably be "Sunday Girl".
12Eurythmics
1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother)

Doubleplusgood

One of their weirder songs, captures the essence of the propaganda in the "1984" novel.
13The Smiths
The Queen Is Dead

There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

Funny and depressing at the same time, something Morrissey and The Smiths do so well.
14The Go-Go's
Talk Show

Head Over Heels

I get a rush from this one as soon as the opening chords kick in.
15Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac

Landslide

Quiet and Exquisite. A truly classic song.
16Rush
Moving Pictures

Limelight

Could have gone with Red Barchetta, but this was the first Rush song that really got through to me.
17'Til Tuesday
Voices Carry

Voices Carry

I always thought these guys were one of the most underrated '80s bands. Another song that was played so often it's hard to fully hear it any more, but there's a reason it was played so often.
18The Cranberries
Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?

Linger

A great showcase for Dolores's voice.
19Nirvana
Nevermind

Smells Like Teen Spirit

Yet another song that has been played to death and then some, but I just couldn't see putting another Nirvana song ahead of it.
20The Slant
Try This

Simple

A simple but beautiful love song by a local Long Island band you've never heard of.
21Future Bible Heroes
Memories of Love

Memories of Love

This wasn't the first song that jumped out at me on this album, but it's the one that has stayed with me the longest. From my favorite album of the '90s.
22Paramore
Brand New Eyes

Brick By Boring Brick

I love the way this barrels out of the bridge to the triumphant last chorus. This is the kind of song I miss from Paramore's new lineup.
23Bayside
Bayside

Existing in a Crisis (Evelyn)

Maybe my favorite f-you song to a former lover ever.
24Black 47
Fire Of Freedom

Funky Ceili (Bridie's Song)

I almost went with "Voodoo City", but this one is just too catchy to pass over.
25Blackmore's Night
Shadow of the Moon

Renaissance Faire

Probably Blackmore's Night's theme song. It really states the band's reason for being.
