| Favorites (But Remember, I'm Old)
These are the bands I usually list as my 25 favorite bands (although there are about a zillion more that I love), and my favorite song for each. (Songs are favorites today, though, tomorrow they'll probably be different). Some are predictable favorite songs, others are a bit off the beaten track. | 1 | | Jethro Tull Heavy Horses
Heavy Horses
To the best of my knowledge, the only rock love song to the British plough horse ever recorded. I love most of Tull's different musical stages, but their rustic/Elizabethan period is my favorite. | 2 | | The Who Who's Next
Behind Blue Eyes
Definitely played to death, but if you can listen with fresh ears, a truly great song, both musically and lyrically. Runner-up is probably "Amazing Journey. | 3 | | Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
Welcome to the Machine
I consider this the greatest album of all time. The song "Wish You Were Here" is a close second to this one. | 4 | | Yes Going for the One
Turn of the Century
Yes's version of a love song. Probably an unusual choice as a favorite for Yes songs. Runner-up would be "And You and I". | 5 | | The Good Rats Tasty
The Songwriter
Maybe the most autobiographical song Peppi Marchello ever wrote. I still can't believe the man is gone, but at least the music lives on. | 6 | | Procol Harum A Salty Dog
A Salty Dog
Procol's take on Rime of the Ancient Mariner. My favorite band for musical epic fantasies. | 7 | | Bruce Springsteen Born to Run
Thunder Road
From the good old days, when most of Bruce's songs were about getting the hell of out Jersey. | 8 | | Joni Mitchell Clouds
Chelsea Morning
My favorite folk singer, her voice is incredibly beautiful here. | 9 | | The Cars The Cars
Just What I Needed
It's all about the synthesizer on this one for me. | 10 | | The Police Zenyatta Mondatta
Don't Stand So Close to Me
Much better than the updated version they did later in their career. An ode to pervy teachers. | 11 | | Blondie Parallel Lines
11:59
An unusual choice, short, but right on. Runner-up would probably be "Sunday Girl". | 12 | | Eurythmics 1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother)
Doubleplusgood
One of their weirder songs, captures the essence of the propaganda in the "1984" novel. | 13 | | The Smiths The Queen Is Dead
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out
Funny and depressing at the same time, something Morrissey and The Smiths do so well. | 14 | | The Go-Go's Talk Show
Head Over Heels
I get a rush from this one as soon as the opening chords kick in. | 15 | | Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac
Landslide
Quiet and Exquisite. A truly classic song. | 16 | | Rush Moving Pictures
Limelight
Could have gone with Red Barchetta, but this was the first Rush song that really got through to me. | 17 | | 'Til Tuesday Voices Carry
Voices Carry
I always thought these guys were one of the most underrated '80s bands. Another song that was played so often it's hard to fully hear it any more, but there's a reason it was played so often. | 18 | | The Cranberries Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?
Linger
A great showcase for Dolores's voice. | 19 | | Nirvana Nevermind
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Yet another song that has been played to death and then some, but I just couldn't see putting another Nirvana song ahead of it. | 20 | | The Slant Try This
Simple
A simple but beautiful love song by a local Long Island band you've never heard of. | 21 | | Future Bible Heroes Memories of Love
Memories of Love
This wasn't the first song that jumped out at me on this album, but it's the one that has stayed with me the longest. From my favorite album of the '90s. | 22 | | Paramore Brand New Eyes
Brick By Boring Brick
I love the way this barrels out of the bridge to the triumphant last chorus. This is the kind of song I miss from Paramore's new lineup. | 23 | | Bayside Bayside
Existing in a Crisis (Evelyn)
Maybe my favorite f-you song to a former lover ever. | 24 | | Black 47 Fire Of Freedom
Funky Ceili (Bridie's Song)
I almost went with "Voodoo City", but this one is just too catchy to pass over. | 25 | | Blackmore's Night Shadow of the Moon
Renaissance Faire
Probably Blackmore's Night's theme song. It really states the band's reason for being. | |
Papa Universe
05.12.17 | So you're old, huh? | Titan
05.12.17 | with age comes wisdom and impeccable taste in music......in your case at least | Divaman
05.12.17 | Thanks Titan. Accidentally hit submit before list was done. Think i'm gonna go back and do track comments.
Yeah Unique Universe, some days, anyway. | bloc
05.13.17 | Haha dude Paramore sticks out soooo much | Titan
05.13.17 | chorus in 16 is just incredible | butcherboy
05.13.17 | God that Cars song is timeless.. The proper kind of pop punk.. Lovely list.. | Divaman
05.13.17 | Thanks Titan and bb.
You think, bloc? I don't know, Bayside is the same era as Paramore, and as for the spirit of the music, I think if most Paramore fans had come of age in the '80s, they would have been Blondie fans. | butcherboy
05.13.17 | on that note, new Blondie is kind of breaking my heart with blandness.. But I fucking love how her voice aged.. | Divaman
05.13.17 | Getting ready to review that one next, bb. The album is growing on me, but I'm not feeling the way you are about her voice. | butcherboy
05.13.17 | really? it's just so smoky, I love it.. I've been listening to the songs she sang on the Jeffrey Lee Pierce tribute (potentially my next review), and within a more country-ish frame, they sound even better.. that being said, I really like the Johnny Marr song on the new one.. | Divaman
05.13.17 | It's thinned out as lot, though, and on a few songs, when she's hitting her notes, they're trailing out of key at the end. This was true somewhat on the last album also, but on that one, the songs were so good that I didn't care. On this one, too many of the songs aren't good enough to distract me. I hate saying that because I love Deborah Harry. | TwigTW
05.13.17 | Old, lol... I don't even know what my top 25 are at this point, but I'm sure Blondie would be on the list. | wham49
05.13.17 | cant go wrong with 2, maybe the best album ever recorded | Azertherion
05.13.17 | Zenyatta Mondatta always felt like the second worst Police for me (as Ghost In The Machine is quite bad). Regetta De Blanc/Synchro are my personal favourites.
Don't know what to think about the Paramore thought...^^ | manosg
05.13.17 | Exactly my thoughts for 25! If I had to pick the one song that contains the essence of what Blackmore was trying to achieve, it's Renaissance Faire. There's even a live version of the song where Ritchie sings, dances and smiles which is a bit weird to see. | Divaman
05.14.17 | Sad thing is Blackmore's Night has a small cult following over here. Much bigger following, from what I can tell, in Europe, especially Germany. |
