Anyone else noticed this?
Many of the Prog metal bands seem to use higher vocals, even through all the other styles, it appears in. I'm not a prog expert, but I thought this was an interesting trend. I also now it isn't all encompassing, just look at Meshuggah, early Opeth, or Strapping Young Lad. |
1 | Dream Theater
James LaBrie, no surprise here. Hitting the higher register is like walking for him. |
2 | Queensryche
Especially on songs like Revolution Calling, Geoff Tate really hits them high notes. |
3 | Death
Here it is a bit stranger. Sure, Chuck was in the lower register, until The Sound of Perseverance. Here he adopts a higher vocal range for their most progressive album. |
4 | Periphery
When Sotelo took the mic, they gained a vocalist with a higher range. Sure, he can also hit the screams that are lower, but it is hard to ignore the heights on Marigold. |
5 | Iron Maiden
Perhaps not as prog as some of the other bands above, but it is Bruce Dickinson, and the highs that he can hit are astounding. |
6 | Devin Townsend
Encompassing most of his career, his progressive sound is his current outlet and songs like Offer Your Light really show his range and the highs he can hit. Sure, it isn't Rob Halford, but it can still get up there. |
7 | Vektor
Prog-Black-Thrash, there are going to be the higher screeching vocals. It is awesome though. |
8 | Emperor
Might as well loop Ihsahn into the mix, as again, black metal screeching seems to go rather nicely with prog. |
9 | Mastodon
Brann Dailor manages to produce soaring vocals behind the kit. Wow. |
