EMO CROWN: CON VS. UNIQUE

RULES: Users Drifter and DeadlyNightShade will be the two judges. Con and Unique will present 1 rec for the judges each and after each rec is presented the judges will listen to said album and rate it out of 5 using .1 increments. A new round of recs will be presented once both judges have finished rating/listening to both albums. This will continue until a total of 30 albums will be presented, 15 from Conmaniac and 15 from UniqueUniverse. Winner will be determined by the highest AVG but tie breaker will be whoever had the best rec and each judge gets 1 vote for that.
1A Great Big Pile of Leaves
Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex?

ROUND 1

DeadlyNightShade: AGPOL's album Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex is an album that manages to bring catchiness and technicality all at once without ever overstaying its welcome. The wistful lyricism paired with unique vocal deliveries contrast the upbeat nature of the guitar lines in a way that is both surprising and highly satisfying 4.3

Drifter: A lot of high highs, but some lows as well. I really love the guitar and the singers voice but some parts were just kinda boring. 3.9

2Sunny Day Real Estate
Diary

DeadlyNightShade: Sunny Day Real Estate's album Diary is both emotionally powerful as it is instrumentally. The balance between the toned down emotional segments and the aggressive instrumentation helped to bring focus to the especially tender vocal deliveries presented here. I was fairly impressed with this as a whole. 4.1

Drifter: My first listen of this left me unimpressed and kind of bored, but second listen definitely changed my opinion. Though it doesn't have the highs of Prefontal Cortex, it's more consistent, and better for it. 4

3The So So Glos
Kamikaze

ROUND 2

DeadlyNightShade: Kamikaze is an album loaded with some of the most unique vocals I've heard in awhile. Took me a few listens to fully grasp them and I'd still say thats the biggest drawback here for me. Instrumentally it was adventurous and more than made up for it though. 4

Drifter: It's crazy how fucking atrocious these vocals can be and how good they can be. They're mostly bad though. It did start to pick up some good pace after the third song but those first three were awful. King's County II is actually a really good song. 2.5

4Captain, We're Sinking
The Future Is Cancelled

DeadlyNightShade: The Future is Cancelled contains vocals that vary from passionate screams to tender melodies and catchy hooks paired with energetic instrumentation. There's little to complain about due to the albums variety and I never really got bored. 4.5

Drifter: Definitely need to spend more time with this, but still really good as of right now. That first song whew. 3.6

5The Obsessives
Heck No, Nancy

ROUND 3

DeadlyNightShade: Heck No, Nancy contains passionate vocals that are only enhanced by the impressive riffs and tight rhythm work in place here. A highly enjoyable listen though I didn't care for the vocals overlapped on 'Bored' and 'Am I High'. 4.4

Drifter: Better than I expected tbh. Really nice indie album you can throw on whenever you want. 4.2

6Turnover
Peripheral Vision

DeadlyNightShade: Peripheral Vision is everything you want in a record. This album is consistent, contains memorable songwriting, and has incredible replay value. Was truly impressed with this rec. 5

Drifter: Oh. My. God. This album is perfect from the vocals to the lyrics to the guitar tone and the overall production. Can't believe it took me so long to get to this. 5

7Piebald
When Life Hands You Lemons

ROUND 4

DeadlyNightShade: Piebald's album begins with bass grooves and riffage that are aure to keep your attention as the record progresses. Vocally there's much of what you'd expect of a record that is "emo" and for me adds the charm these instrumentals needed. 4.2

Drifter: The first song on this is so so so so so soso good. Also that one where he says uglyyyyyy boyyyyyyyy just like meeeeee is amazing as well. This guy's voice is so so god as well. Lots and lots of good with this one. May grow higher. 4.2

Unique's Rec
8Portrait
Discography

DeadlyNightShade: Portrait's raw production on Discoraphy is raw in nature which suites be music generally well however knocks down replay value. This however does not necessarily deter from being enjoyable as there are some very interesting aspects. Mainly the accompaniment of strings. 3.4

Drifter: A lot of great moments with the strings and the guys haunting screams. Unfortunately there was a lot that left me underwhelmed. 3.4

9Bay Faction
Bay Faction

ROUND 5

DeadlyNightShade: Bay faction is an album that blends two genres (r&b and emo) to my surprise much better than I expected. The instrumentals float like a sky of endless clouds that drift by one another seamlessly. The only thing that slightly deters are the vocals that I cant help but feel could be a bit more passionate at times. 4.1

Drifter: Wish I could give this more time, and definitely will, but still really good after the two times I listened. That last track is so so good and that first one as well. 4

Con's Rec
10Alexisonfire
Crisis

DeadlyNightShade: Crisis is an album fairly typical to most post hardcore I enjoy so its kinda hard not to dig this. Enjoyable screamed and clean vocals, with an overall consistency throughout the album. My only con (no pun intended ?) was that it feels a bit samey. 4

Drifter: I love love love the singer's voice but I could do without the screams. Or maybe they enhance the vox... idk. All I know is they're amazing. However this isn't all singing and thrre are some boring parts especially with the instrumentation and the screams. Honestly I could see this growing or getting worse. 3.5

Unique's Rec
11Say Anything
...Is a Real Boy

ROUND 6

DeadlyNightShade: Is A Real Boy was loaded with earworm songs andinfectiously fun vocal melodies paired with equally unique and suprising song structures. Though lyrically can come off a bit pretentious. 4.3

Drifter: Nothin really special about this one for me, just a kinda normal indie album. Doesn't make it bad though and it was enjoyable. 3.5

Unique's Rec
12Wayne Szalinski
Black Mirror

DeadlyNightShade: On Black Mirror, Wayne Szalinski begin with some complex instrumentals paired with over eccentric vocals which at times become grating. Particularly for me when the singer does a quavering with his vocals. However the vocalist does have some highly redeeming moments as well as the band remaining instrumentally entertaing regardless. 3.8

Drifter: Oh man this was a g000000d album. His voice was slightly annoying sometimes but overall was fine. The music behind the vocals was great, his vocals were great, it was all gr8. Definitely see this growing. 4.5
