| Fear
dread and horror in all its forms | 1 | | Jem Finally Woken
They
a pop song that doesn’t pop so much as it simmers. the gleeful church choir appears on a granular tv screen and Jem tears at the walls for the light switch. the most ambiguous pop song ever written, maybe, i can’t say for sure, i’ll get back to you on it. | 2 | | Stalaggh Projekt Misanthropia
Album
so many screams blending into the white noise of black souls. a dog scared mindless by the thunder and a congregation of bad omens. mood music for a sadist’s Christmas lunch. | 3 | | Oneohtrix Point Never Garden of Delete
Ezra
the biggest glitch in the matrix yet. a tapestry of beautiful things drawn and quartered until even its shadow closer resembles its original form. lopatin coughs and splutters until the dimensional gap closes.
"a squiggle in a string of quotients" | 4 | | Nicole Dollanganger Natural Born Losers
Poacher's Pride
doe-eyed and covered in ash. the slow revolution of Poacher’s Pride feels like emotional bedrock; a fear of yourself, like seeing your hollowed-out facade in the water that swirls around the sink drain.
(this whole record could be here) | 5 | | Pharmakon Contact
No Natural Order
a prison guard banging his baton on the bars of each cell he walks past. Pharmakon is a project obsessed with exploring its own limits – chardiet stepping headlong up to the electric fences in her brain and prodding at them with industrial clangs and film trailer fade-to-blacks. I am scared of the rate at which she seems to be progressing. | 6 | | Oathbreaker Rheia
10:58/Second Son of R.
lulling us into a false sense of security like red riding hood and the wolf have conflated into one being, these tracks are both the violence and the reaction at once. in turn, there is the added dimension of confusion – the music always one step ahead, accosting you for lagging behind. | 7 | | O'Brother Endless Light
Slow Sin
foreboding – distilled, bottled and poured down your chimney. grime and grace and gutted persons. | 8 | | Hermitude Tales Of The Drift
Frayed
see: song title, the apprehensive dj scratches, the way this song trails off into smoke, et al.
(this song is on threads, but, again, i can only do so much ha ha) | 9 | | Sharon Van Etten Are We There
Your Love Is Killing Me
"A bit more morbid, but I always associated it with a kind of danger, too: in her not focusing on the driving, nor the road straight ahead of her. It's structured chaos in the subtlest of ways." – Blushful, on the album cover, and by extension the song itself.
terrified of that which should provide comfort, convenience; a place to let your hair down. | 10 | | White Lung Sorry
take the mirror
an exposed bone and a shattered vase. take the mirror before mish breaks it. | 11 | | Gyroscope Sound Shattering Sound
Doctor Doctor
the sound that emanates from a five-car highway pile up. give me that blind, scrambling desperation and watch my skin crawl and my throat go hoarse. in any case, this is an anthem -- it's crippled and violently corkscrewing, but it's an anthem nonetheless. | 12 | | Peste Noire La Sanie des siecles - Panegyrique de la
Nous Sommes Fanes
the most cruelly ironic, nefarious, and coruscating waltz to open a record ever. this curlicue is torn asunder by a single tortured scream. the record, then, unfurls through dungeon after dungeon -- cold, dank and dripping. but the music is skittish, uncertain, like its impetus is second guessed across every threshold. nervous energy colliding with all that is malignant.
cognitive dissonance. | 13 | | The Mothers of Invention We're Only in It for the Money
Are You Hung Up?
careful not to wake the sleeping giant. human shells stepping on eggshells, and something stalking them through the blank, empty space.
....hello frank zappa..... | 14 | | Runzelstirn and Gurgelstock Asshole / Snail Dilemma
Album
tortured classical that i'm yet to finish. my skin crawls into my soul. if an experiment yields calamitous results is it considered a success or a failure? | 15 | | Deep Puddle Dynamics The Taste of Rain...Why Kneel
The Scarecrow Speaks
"even if you're lost / front like you have a plan". furious sage wisdom, in which the anxious sage projects his woes, four times over. the scarecrow doesn't just speak, he inveighs. | 16 | | Bandit Of Life
Pushing
neurosis. disintegration. acerbic, jaded music for those who like their acerbic and jaded music to open up to the light at the end of the tunnel. fear (Of Life). | 17 | | Gas Narkopop

bifurcating; where one branch grows, reaching over your mortal coil with such defined grace it seems illusory. the other, though, needles under the skin with the most austere application of a marching snare this side of the forest. | 18 | | Apocryphos Stone Speak
Tenebrous
an appropriate title / ambient music so dense and multi-faceted it becomes its own textural accompaniment / the rain is whispering to you...don't listen. | 19 | | Have a Nice Life Deathconsciousness
There Is No Food
thanks rowbro
a dust cloud with teeth. have a nice life is a sardonic phrase, and if you need proof delve into the all-encompassing static of this song. | 20 | | Danny Brown Atrocity Exhibition
Pneumonia
thanks DNS
it is ice cold at the bottom of the downward spiral. throughout atrocity exhibition, danny brown finds deranged beats to match his equally deranged delivery. punching holes in hip-hop conventions. | 21 | | Sleepytime Gorilla Museum Grand Opening and Closing
Sleep Is Wrong
thanks polyrhythm
the good cop and the bad cop, the victim and the killer. the only right way to sleep is to keep one eye open, pressed against the door in anticipation of some bad-mannered, avant-garde metal. | 22 | | Protomartyr Relatives In Descent
A Private Understanding
thanks unique (peep comments for his more eloquent, in-depth description)
another dissociative balancing on the edge of dissonance. it's easy to be alone in a crowded room, and it's even easier to let your soul fall through the floor. | 23 | | clipping. CLPPNG
Body and Blood
thanks blush
mosquito frequencies slicing through a wired fence, revealing an industrial heart. this is not how a night out should go, with both body and blood lining the gutter. | 24 | | Comus Song to Comus
Song to Comus
thanks mars
gloriously unhinged, like a sarcastically scored trip to the hospital. frenetic and ravaged, like the peak of a trough (or vice-versa). a song that you surrender to as soon as you try to make sense of its genetic make-up | 25 | | No Trend Too Many Humans
Reality Breakdown
thanks pjorn
fear of literally everything. trapped by a white picket fence, like a dead dog in a hot car. | 26 | | Oxbow Thin Black Duke
A Gentleman's Gentlemen
thanks frivolous
a mad-man finds enough people and enough instruments to espouse his incoherent rambling. he stumbles dangerously close to all the serrated edges. | 27 | | Jute Gyte Oviri
Yarinareth, Yarinareth, Yarinareth
thanks claire
a fear-inducing migraine, migraine-inducing fear. we should be separated by a wall. | 28 | | Slint Spiderland
Don, Aman
thanks asleep
the whispering pioneers of post-rock. torchbearers, but the torch is a dying light. social commentary that floods normal circumstance with tension and the faint wisp of smoke. violently meandering. | 29 | | Infester To the Depths... In Degradation
To The Depths (In Degradation)
thanks bloon
from the depths, more like. there's a real muted aspect to the production here -- one which i'm not familiar with (is this unique in death?), but one which - paradoxically - gives this song a dangerously sharp edge, as if the double-kick patterns are constantly perforating the listener. | 30 | | Old Gray Slow Burn
Razor Blade
thanks con
an open letter to a closed chapter. this is pure fear, really, as if old gray have gleaned a genuine field recording of a tragedy and just layered pummeling guitars and drums over the top. | |

07.27.17 | Protomartyr - A Private Understanding
It's a fresh track, but one that already caused my brain to vibrate at an extortionate rate. There is something oddly off about it. Sure, the songwriting, the lyrical component and the instrumental package are all some of the best Post-Punk offerings in years (in just one track!!!), but the atmosphere is simply dizzyingly abysmal. It feels like you're lost. Not in solitude, when you lose your path. You're lost in the obscurity and absurdity of the world around you. Everything becomes obsolete day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment; you become numb to the idea of empathy and compassion; your view of the world around you starts to disintigrate; each and every anxiety is gradually deconstructing your already weak confidence; your connection to the outside world becomes thinner and more distant with each passing wake. You are falling into a pit of despair. But there is something on the other side. A voice. She's calling for you. She's trying to reach you. But you are already too far gone. Disconnetion and isolation. Lost in a crowded monolith of communication. The greatest fear you could ever endure.
"In the lowest depth a lower deep."
"I don't want to hear those vile trumpets anymore."
"Call me Heraclitus the Obscure."
And as a cherry on top, the music video showing that very disconnetion with the passionless world in form. You're old and nobody cares. | ZombieToyDuck
