REC ROULETTE ROUND 8 -- Butcher's Beat..

gilfrippuni - also known as the worst Starbucks order of all time..

This round is fairly straightforward.. rec me a HIP HOP album.. a good one.. evidently..
2A Tribe Called Quest
The Low End Theory

My knowledge in hip hop is sneakily decent, but my taste is fairly specific.. I prefer East Coast, New York, Rawkus Rekords type stuff.. Jazzy, woozy instrumentals, and lyrics that don't collapse into utter stupidity..
3Digable Planets
Blowout Comb

that being said, it doesn't have to be from New York obviously.. just something that has a melancholic streak to it.. like King Krule, as a contemporary example.. gimme..

I liked this album at face value.. the artwork was decent, i liked the title, none of it screamed empty braggadocio.. You're right in the sense that the instrumentals here capture that hazy East Coast aesthetic somewhat.. they're melancholic and sometimes veer into pleasantly odd directions, and incorporate just enough of contemporary electronic aspects without losing the soul contained.. the lyrics are fucking atrocious.. properly dumb.. and those newly popular processed singing vocals that most rappers use crop by in places.. pos for the instrumental work.. and a ragged neg on everything else.. 3/5

The first song I liked and could imagine relistening to on this was the brief interlude called Alone and Suffering.. because hip hop tends to structure its songs around continuous loops, there's a moment in good rap (for me), when that loop starts working for the artist, instead of just boring the listener, as in creating so much concentric momentum with verses that the listener feels dizzy.. but this is mostly that put-upon aggressive shite that just propels itself forward, plowing through, working both against the flow of music and only serving to annoy the fuck out of me.. i do appreciate sequencing songs with titles Hoeish Ass Bitch and Mona Lisa Overdrive back-to-back.. i don't know.. your basic-ass gangsta rap record.. 2.5/5

Yes! this was damn good.. production was smooth as all hell.. some of the instrumentals skirted the side of flowery, but fuck this was wonderful.. more like that! 4/5 EDIT - listened to Toad's rec by mistake

gill's actual rec - this is essentially exactly what I asked for, lovely instrumentals, slice of life lyricisms.. The brass samples and heavy-piano undercurrents in the music itself was just wonderful.. fantastic, gill, sorry for the runaround! 4/5 and the goddamn WINNER!!
